Starting the school year with a new pair of shoes puts everyone on the same playing field, says The River Sparta Pastor John Phillips, and this is the premise behind the church’s upcoming event, 1,000 for 1,000.

1,000 for 1,000 aims to provide 1,000 pairs of shoes for 1,000 children, through gift cards to Shoe Sensation, in Cookeville.

The event is slated for 10 a.m., Sunday, July 31, 2016, at the White County Fairgrounds.

Children must be present with their guardian to receive tickets, which will be exchanged for the shoe gift certificates. One gift certificate will be awarded per child, along with a ticket for a hot dog and drink for every member of the family.

There will also be games and bounce houses until 12:30 p.m., at which time there will be music, a welcome message, and the awarding of the gift cards. The gift cards will be for $30 for the first 1,000 school-age children to register.

The event ends at 2 p.m.

The church says this event is an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with the entire community.
