Nathan E. Hawkins, 80, of McMinnville, passed away Dec. 29, 2001.
Hawkins was born April 12, 1921, in Jackson County, to Sam and Avo Smith Hawkins.
He was a member of New Hope Community Church in Jackson County. Hawkins served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Charles R. Hawkins of Gainesboro and Stanley C. Hawkins of Sparta; one brother, Haggard Hawkins of California; three sisters, Helen Barlow of Nashville and Jane Pryor and Loretta Paquette both of California; eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Stephen J. Bensing, 58, of Madison Heights, Mich., passed away Dec. 22, 2001.
Bensing was born March 7, 1943, in Findlay, Ohio, to Lester and Agnes Taylor Bensing.
He was a member of Woodlawn Church in Royal Oak, Mich. and was a designer at M & T Design in Troy, Mich.
Bensing was preceded in death by his mother.

Louise Raines, 63, of Celina, passed away Dec. 25, 2001.
Raines was born Feb. 7, 1938, in Celina, to Joe Bob Daniels and Inis Adams Daniels.
She was a homemaker.

Virgil Ray Bryant, 94, passed away Dec. 16, 2001.
Bryant was born Jan. 26, 1907, in Sparta, to Waymon and Martha Brown Bryant.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Bryant was a lumber man.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby
A. Bryant of Rickman; two daughters, Barbara Tackel of Washington and Betty Bryant of Rickman; one granddaughter, Sydney Hennessee; one grandson, Charles B. Tackel; one great granddaughter, Lauran Tackel; and one great grandson, Bryant Hennessee.
Services were held at 11 a.m., Dec. 19, 2001, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Old Bon Air Cemetery. Martha Selby officiated.

Traffic stop led to several arrests

Two were arrested on drug charges after authorities stopped a vehicle on Will Thompson Road because the driver had a suspended license.
At approximately 1:15 p.m., Dec. 25, 2001, Deputy Connor Wardlaw of the White County Sheriff’s Department stopped a vehicle on Will Thompson Road because he had prior knowledge of the driver, Charles James Earl Davis, 18, not having a drivers license. According to the report, a license check on Davis did reveal his license was suspended.

Janice Marie Wheeler, 60, of Cookeville, passed away Dec. 28, 2001, at St. Thomas Hospital.
Wheeler was born Aug. 24, 1941, in Overton County, to Lester and Pearl Allen Sanders.
She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Wheeler was a Registered Nurse and a member of M.E.N.S.A. and American Nurses Association.
Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Will Burton of Indianapolis, Ind. and Brian Lester Burton of Cookeville; two daughters, Terry Aline Bush of Cookeville and Tracey Jean Burton of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Buddy Sanders of California and Al Sanders of Nashville; one sister, Barbara Wilson of Cookeville; 12 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Early morning burglary at Save-A-Lot

The Sparta Police Department investigated a burglary on Mose Drive this morning in reference to a large quantity of cigarettes being stolen. The burglar broke into the local grocery store by the front door and was not apprehended at this time.
Authorities were dispatched to Save-A-Lot at 179 Mose Drive at approximately 4:55 a.m. The Sparta Police Department arrived on the scene at approximately 4:59 a.m. and found the front door
had been pried open and the burglar alarm was on.

Elbert Mansfield Humphrey, 86, of Walling, passed away Dec. 25, 2001, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Humphrey was born Sept. 15, 1915, in White County, to Ammon and Lela Johnson Humphrey.
He was a farmer.
Humphrey was preceded in death by two sons, Neil Felton and Dariel Wayne Humphrey.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ruth Felton Humphrey of Walling; one grandson, Kevin Humphrey; and one daughter-in-law, Doris Roberts Humphrey of Walling.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Dec. 28, 2001, at Springhill The Baptist Church of Christ. Frank Randolph and Alton Marcum officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
