Local residence totally consumed by flames

Flames roared throughout a local residence on Wednesday leaving a total mass of destruction behind.
No one was inside the home at the time of the fire.
Authorities were dispatched to the scene of a two story structure fire at 11060 Monterey Highway at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Chief Lew Betterton of the Cherry Creek Fire Department said, “Chief Ed Kay of the Sparta Fire Department was the first one on the scene and said the home was totally engulfed in flames.”
The residence was owned by Bobby Cunningham and authorities said Dave Johnson was renting the home.

Area merchants are ready for last minute shoppers

The holiday season has proven to be busy as usual this year, and the last week of shopping before Christmas is suddenly here. The shoppers are hurriedly making their final rounds with hopes of finding a great bargain for those last few names on the list.

Effie Gladys Lane

Effie Gladys Lane, 81, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 26, 2001.
Lane was born Aug. 16, 1920, in White County, to Eston Green and Louella Adair Green.
She was a homemaker.
Lane was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include two brothers, Carmen Green of Michigan and Carl Green of Sparta; two sons, Charles Swindell and Kelly Swindell both of Michigan; and one daughter, Darlene Swindell of Sparta.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Nov. 28, 2001, at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery. Bro. Bransford England officiated.

Reta Cole Martin

Reta Cole Martin, 86, Spencer, passed away Nov. 28, 2001, at NHC Healthcare.
Martin was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Van Buren County, to John C. Cole and Eugenia Groves Cole.
She attended the Church of Christ and was a merchant.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Tony Marston of Pikeville and Gaye and Kelly M. Hillis of McMinnville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerry Wade and Barbara K. Martin and Glen “Red” and Bethene Cole all of Spencer; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Barbara Ann Madewell, 58, of Spencer, passed away Dec. 1, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Madewell was born January 4, 1943, in Tennessee, to W.H. Guy Sr. and Maudie Brock Guy.
She attended Clarks Chapel Church of God. Madewell had been employed at the Shirt Factory.
Madewell was preceded in death by her father and one grandson, Marcus Jack Bouldin.

Robert “Bobby” Swindell

Robert “Bobby” Swindell, 71, of Quebeck, passed away Nov. 25, 2001.
Swindell was born April 19, 1930, in White County, to Ransom Everett Swindell and Emma Lenora Swindell.
He had been employed in tool and dye.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Estelle Swindell of Quebeck; one daughter, Wanda Gribble of Quebeck; one sister, Marie Slatten of Quebeck; and three grandchildren, David Alan Johnson, Steven Michael Lowery and Bobby Dale Gribble.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Nov. 27, 2001, at Jericho Church of Christ with burial in Jericho Cemetery. Charlie Myers and Robert Burton officiated.

Sidney A. “Sid” Stacy Sr.

Sidney A. “Sid” Stacy Sr. of Painesville, Ohio, passed away Nov. 26, 2001.
He attended the Painesville Assembly of God Church where he played the organ and was a former deacon. Stacy enjoyed gospel music and was a pianist for a gospel quartet for 15 years.
Stacy was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Porter and Georgia Bell Stacy; one sister, Darrell Dee Guttschalk; and one brother, Estelle Kewsen Stacy.

Margie Lee Billings, 93, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 30, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Billings was born Aug. 16, 1908, in Graceson, Va., to Benjamin and Mazie Phipps Halesy.
She was a homemaker.
Billings was preceded in death by her husband, Conley A. Billings.
Survivors include three daughters, Carrie Jones, Retha Dixon and Evelyn Wagoner all of Sparta; one sister, Ada Halsey of Sparta, N.C.; 30 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Dec. 8, at the chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Eugene Lawson officiated.

Doris Martha Watkins

Doris Martha Watkins, 91, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 21, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Watkins was born March 17, 1910, in Pickett County, to Benjamin Harrison and Mattie Robins Harrison.
She was a retired school teacher.
Watkins was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Quinn Harrison.
Survivors include one daughter, Joan Johnson and one sister-in-law, Thelma Watkins of Somerset, Ky.
Graveside services were held at 9 a.m., Nov. 22, 2001, at Elrod Cemetery. Bro. Don Johnson officiated.

Glin Dallas Emerton, 70, of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away Nov. 27, 2001.
Emerton was born July 14, 1931, in Celina, to Joe and Linnie Goolsby Emerton.
He served in the United States Air Force. Emerton was retired from Conrail after serving as customer service representative for 28 years. He taught school for two years in Clay County and also served as principal for four years. Emerton played football for Western Kentucky and graduated from Tennessee Technological University.
