Mary Jane Ware Davis, 86, of McMinnville, passed away Dec. 14, 2001.
She a member of the Church of Christ. Davis was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Peabody College. She was a retired associate librarian and school teacher with David Lipscomb University.
Davis was preceded in death by her first husband, John H. Webb Sr.
Survivors include her husband, James Garmon Davis of McMinnville; one son, John H. Webb Jr. of McMinnville; one granddaughter, Tracey Jane Webb of Antioch; one sister, Martha Poston of Lynchburg, Va.; one brother, S. Jack Ware of Sparta; three step sons, William G. Pauline Pennington Burgess

Pauline Pennington Burgess, 88, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 17, 2001.
Burgess was born Feb. 9, 1913, in Smith County, to Tom and Emma Cantrell Pennington.
She was a homemaker.
Burgess was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Tom Burgess.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Leslie Burgess of Asheville, Ala.; three granddaughters, Belinda West, Susan Urquhart and Paula Cook; and four great grandchildren, Cavin, Scott, Ashley and Addison.
Services were held at 11 a.m., Dec. 18, 2001, at West Sparta Church of Christ with burial in Highland Cemetery. Chad Ramsey officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Virgil Ray Bryant

Virgil Ray Bryant, 94, passed away Dec. 16, 2001.
Bryant was born Jan. 26, 2001, in Sparta, to Waymon and Martha Brown Bryant.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Bryant was a lumber man.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby
A. Bryant of Rickman; two daughters, Barbara Tackel of Washington and Betty Bryant of Rickman; one granddaughter, Sydney Hennessee; one grandson, Charles B. Tackel; one great granddaughter, Lauran Tackel; and one great grandson, Bryant Hennessee.
Services were held at 11 a.m., Dec. 19, 2001, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Old Bon Air Cemetery. Martha Selby officiated.

The long line of Harley Davidson tail lights on Memorial Highway on December 8 resembled a bright string of Christmas bulbs as members of the Cumberland Valley Harley Riders (CVHR) enjoyed acting as Santa’s elves.
Transporting over 100 toys and over $3,000 in monetary donations to the YMCA to assist efforts in their Wish Upon A Star program, CVHR riders braved the rain to discover hot chili, beverages and homemade desserts awaiting them when they arrived with their bundles of gifts and dollars.
This year marked the second annual Harley Toy Run, and CVHR members plan to continue their donations to the YMCA for many years … CONTINUED

Local residence totally consumed by flames

Flames roared throughout a local residence on Wednesday leaving a total mass of destruction behind.
No one was inside the home at the time of the fire.
Authorities were dispatched to the scene of a two story structure fire at 11060 Monterey Highway at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Chief Lew Betterton of the Cherry Creek Fire Department said, “Chief Ed Kay of the Sparta Fire Department was the first one on the scene and said the home was totally engulfed in flames.”
The residence was owned by Bobby Cunningham and authorities said Dave Johnson was renting the home.

Area merchants are ready for last minute shoppers

The holiday season has proven to be busy as usual this year, and the last week of shopping before Christmas is suddenly here. The shoppers are hurriedly making their final rounds with hopes of finding a great bargain for those last few names on the list.

Doris Martha Watkins

Doris Martha Watkins, 91, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 21, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Watkins was born March 17, 1910, in Pickett County, to Benjamin Harrison and Mattie Robins Harrison.
She was a retired school teacher.
Watkins was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Quinn Harrison.
Survivors include one daughter, Joan Johnson and one sister-in-law, Thelma Watkins of Somerset, Ky.
Graveside services were held at 9 a.m., Nov. 22, 2001, at Elrod Cemetery. Bro. Don Johnson officiated.

Shirley Ellen Boyd

Shirley Ellen Boyd, 66, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 30, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Boyd was born Nov. 12, 1935, in Elkridge, W. Va., to William Howard Oney and Bertie Ellen Collins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Samuel Peter Boyd.

Glin Dallas Emerton

Glin Dallas Emerton, 70, of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away Nov. 27, 2001.
Emerton was born July 14, 1931, in Celina, to Joe and Linnie Goolsby Emerton.
He served in the United States Air Force. Emerton was retired from Conrail after serving as customer service representative for 28 years. He taught school for two years in Clay County and also served as principal for four years. Emerton played football for Western Kentucky and graduated from Tennessee Technological University.
Emerton was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Keith Emerton;
three sisters, Rose Copeland, Elsa Hampton and Thelma Jo Emerton; and one brother, Howard Willis Emerton.

Margie Lee Billings, 93, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 30, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Billings was born Aug. 16, 1908, in Graceson, Va., to Benjamin and Mazie Phipps Halesy.
She was a homemaker.
Billings was preceded in death by her husband, Conley A. Billings.
Survivors include three daughters, Carrie Jones, Retha Dixon and Evelyn Wagoner all of Sparta; one sister, Ada Halsey of Sparta, N.C.; 30 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Dec. 8, at the chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Eugene Lawson officiated.
