Deciphering local politics

Some people liken politics to cryptography in that the workings of elected officials seem, at times, to be a puzzle for regular citizens.
But elect a cryptographer to public office, and things might become much clearer for everyone.
Margaret Donovan Pearson, former Washington cryptanalyst, began her life in Nashville and went on to excel locally in academics.
After earning B.S and M.A. degrees from two universities, Vanderbilt and Peabody, Margaret was recruited by the Army Signal Corps to use her skills in deciphering sensitive enemy communications and documents.

Sara Hampton Sherrell

Sara Hampton Sherrell, 73, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 27, 2002, at White County
Community Hospital.
Sherrell was born Oct. 11, 1928, in Lexington, Ky., to Beecher and Ida Mae Williams Hampton.
She began her educational career as an elementary teacher. Sherrell taught at Macedonia, Eller’s Ridge and Old Zion. She was a classroom teacher elementary school principal and supervisor. Sherrell served as Educational Coordinator with the State Department of Education in Nashville. Her professional certificates included a B.S. Degree, Tennessee Technological University in Elementary Education and Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Middle Tennessee State University. Bobby Joe Savage

Bobby Joe Savage, 69, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 28, 2002, at his residence.
Savage was born Sept. 24, 1932, in White County, to Jasper and Inous Gertrude Smith Savage.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Savage was preceded in death by his wife, Mariane Daughery Savage.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Paul Woodcock of Sparta; four brothers, Edward Ray Savage of Monticello, Ky., Ronald Savage and George Savage both of Smyrna and Charles Savage of South Carolina; four sisters, Vivian Rittenberry of Sparta, Iness Walth of Washington, Mary Staggs of Baton Rouge, La. and Dianne Smith of Alabama; one step … CONTINUED

Elzora Lawson

Elzora Lawson, 83, of Spencer, passed away Feb. 27, 2002.
Lawson was born Aug. 26, 1918, to George Gilreath and Thea Durham Gilreath.
She attended the Church of God and was a homemaker.
Lawson was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Lawson; one daughter, Emma Jo Daniels; one son, Jessie Alton Osburn; two sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors include one son, Billy Brooks of Gordon, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; special cousins, Gwyn Youngblood and Ruth Dodson; and special friends.
Services were held at 2:30 p.m., at Love-Cantrell & Cope Spencer Chapel with burial in
Town Cemetery in Spencer. Wayne Sullivan officiated.

James D. Hill, 78, of Muncie, Ind., passed away Feb. 28, 2002.
Hill was born in Sparta to Hattie Mae Stewart Hill and Fred C. Hill.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
Hill farmed in Delaware County and also worked at Warner Gear for over 32 years.
Hill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary E. Hill; and four brothers, Fred Hill, Tony Hill, John Hill and Roby Hill.

Reba Clorene Nash, 80, of Sparta, passed away March 1, 2002, at NHC of Cookeville.
Nash was born April 15, 1921, in Putnam County, to Joseph Joe Winfield Hickey and Ethel Gentry Hickey.
She had been a teacher.
Nash was preceded in death by two brothers, Loyd Hickey and Harwell Hickey.
Survivors include her husband, Andrew Nash of Sparta; one daughter, Betty Ballard of Sparta; two sons, Jerry Don Nash of Sparta and Gary Nash of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, Estelle Nash and Leron Cass both of Cookeville; one brother, Lennis Hickey of Chattanooga; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

James Marion Doran, 85, of Cookeville, passed away Feb. 27, 2002, at Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Center.
He served in World War II and was a graduate of Tennessee Technological University. Doran received his Masters Degrees from George Peabody College and University of Illinois. He was a retired mathematics professor at Tennessee Technological University.
Doran was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Pennington.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Beulah Manus Doran of Cookeville daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and Foster Webb of Gulf Shores, Ala., Elizabeth and David Hutchison of Washington, D.C. and Carolyn and David Stults of Marietta, Ga.; one son, James M. (Ramsey) Doran Jr.; … CONTINUED

Pauline Dodson, 81, of McMinnville, passed away Feb. 24, 2002, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Dodson was born Feb. 22, 1921, in
White County, to Robert and Lou Brock Richardson.
She attended St. Mary’s Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Dodson was preceded in death by her husband, George Thurman Dodson; two daughters, Lorell McGuire and Norma Jean Yates; two step sons, Edward Dodson and Donald Dodson; and one sister, Mary Maggie Priest.

Patricia JoAnne Mitchell, 64, passed away March 1, 2002, at Centennial Medical Center.
Mitchell was born June 12, 1937, in Swampscott, Mass., to Ralph Hudson Reid and Marjorie Mae Loring Reid.
She was a homemaker.
Mitchell was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Donald James Mitchell of Spencer; one son, David Louis Mitchell of Massachusetts; one daughter, Laurie Lynne Miller of Sparta; one brother, William Hudson Reid of Massachusetts; and one sister, Marjorie Day of Vermont; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at 5 p.m., March 4, 2002, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

– Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 285 Bright Road at approximately 12:15 p.m., Feb. 6, 2002. The firemen had to be extremely careful while extinguishing the fire because of six propane tanks located inside. According to authorities, one tank blew up when they first arrived on the scene. Vehicle fire at McDonald’s on Saturday

A vehicle burned while in the parking lot of McDonalds on Saturday afternoon. Local firemen responded and had the fire under control within a short amount of time.
The Sparta Fire Dept. was dispatched to McDonalds, at 800 Roosevelt Drive, approximately 3:28 p.m., March 2, 2002. Authorities were on the scene at 3:30 p.m. and found flames showing. According to authorities, flames were coming from the engine compartment at the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle, a 1988 Toyota MR2, is owned by Jack Burdette, of Sparta.
Approximately 10 firefighters responded and quickly extinguished the flames.
