ERG receives Award of Excellence

The Upper Cumberland Association of Realtors recently presented the prestigious Award of Excellence to three ERG agents who have produced at least one million dollars in sales for the fiscal year. Legislative luncheon hosted by Chamber of Commerce

The budgetary problems for the State of Tennessee are still a hotly debated item at political gatherings, and White Countians had the opportunity to directly question legislators during a luncheon held on Friday.
The Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce sponsored a legislative luncheon at White County Community Hospital, with State Senator Charlotte Burks and State Representative Charles Curtiss answering questions posed by those in attendance.
Curtiss reviewed items he felt were top priority in the budget crisis. “When we left this session, we were 256 million in the red,” he said.

Melda June Echterling Humphrey

Melda June Echterling Humphrey, infant daughter of Darin Humphrey and Jennifer June Echterling, passed away April 11, 2002, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
Melda June was born April 11, 2002.
Survivors include her parents, both of Hermitage; maternal grandmother, Cynthia Echterling of Indiana; paternal grandparents, Linton and Sandra Humphrey of Sparta and Mary Ann and Don Taylor of Mt. Juliet; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held at 2 p.m., April 13, 2002, at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Tony Hudson and Donald Howard officiated.
Whitson Funeral Home in Cookeville was in charge of arrangements.


Gunman robs Ace TV Rentals

Authorities responded to Ace TV Rentals at 219
Mose Drive after a masked gunman held store employees at gun point on Saturday. Officers made an attempt to pursue the subject and brought in a tracking unit from Cookeville.
The subject had apparently entered the back door, wearing black clothing and a black ski mask. According to the report, the robber held employees at gun point with a semi-automatic handgun and stole an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the building.
At approximately 7:10 p.m., Saturday, Ptl. Roy Gooch, Ptl. Jeff Glass and Lt. Ken McCormick of the Sparta Police Dept. arrived on the scene to investigate. … CONTINUED

Complaints voiced against Justice Center offices

“Henry Foster himself told me I would have to deal with the F.B.I. to sign a complaint,” said Susan McDaniel at the recent meeting the White County Commission’s Steering B Committee.
“I have gone up there three times to sign a complaint and was denied.”
McDaniel appeared before Steering B Committee to lodge numerous complaints concerning the White County Jail and the manner in which she claimed she was treated by employees of the White County Circuit Court Clerk’s office.

Dale Carnegie luncheon informative to local businesspeople

The recent executive luncheon to announce the opportunity to bring the Dale Carnegie Course to Sparta was an overwhelming success, according to Jim Crawford of Glyn Ed Newton & Associates, regional Carnegie franchisee.
The luncheon was sponsored by The Expositor as a means of exposing local and regional businesses to the overall areas on which the Dale Carnegie Course focuses in helping people turn potential into performance.
“We were extremely impressed and, quite frankly a bit surprised, at the number of attendees,” Crawford said.
“Typically, 15-20 percent of those making reservations won’t attend the luncheon.
This wasn’t the case last Tuesday.

Virginia M. Bolding, 67, of Hartsville, passed away April 11, 2002, at Comprehensive Care Center o Hartsville.
Bolding was born May 29, 1934, in Shelby Anna, Ky., to Aaron Robinson and Bertha Seagrace Robinson.
Her attended the Church of God.
Bolding was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by a special, truly loved friend, William Alonzo Baker Jr. and eight children.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Bill Collins of Alabama and Dorthy and Richard Creekmore of Spencer; two sons and one daughter-in-law, James E. and Dimple Bolding of Sparta and B.J. Ida Arlena Grimsley, 74, of Cookeville, passed away April 10, 2002, at NHC Healthcare in Cookeville.
Grimsley’s attended the Baptist Church and was a factory worker for Acme Boot Co. for 36 years.
Grimsley was born July 22, 1927, in Putnam County, to William Bryan and Maggie Lou Adcock Grimsley.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include one brother, William Grimsley of Cookeville; one sister, Ila Burns of Hixson; one niece, Phyllis Byrd; one nephew, Randy Burns; and two great nieces, Rachel and Robyn Burns.

Young was born March 4, 1983, in Lebanon.
He was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church in Gainesboro.
Young was preceded in death by his great grandparents, Benton and Mary Young and Reed and Irene Dunn.
Survivors include two daughters, Jordyn Leannn and Kylee Hope both of Gainesboro; father and step mother, Marty and Janice Young of Crossville; mother and step father, Feleshia and Lawrence Christian of Sparta; two brothers, Wesley Massa of Sparta and Jason Young of Gainesboro; and grandparents, Hubert and Bonnie Young of Gainesboro and Charles and Wylodean Reed of Doyle.
