James Harrison Gambrell

James Harrison Gambrell, 64, of Sparta, passed away April 9, 2002.
Gambrell was born May 2, 1937, in DeKalb County, to Harley Lewis and Verta Seabolt Gambrell.
He was a mechanic.
Gambrell was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Brock Gambrell of Sparta; two daughters and one son-in-law, Darlene and Jerry O’Connor of Sparta and Jamie Gambrell of Knoxville; and two sisters, Alice Pearl Elrod of Sparta and Elizabeth Dobbs of Baxter.
Services were held at 2 p.m., April 11, 2002, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Gambrell Family Cemetery. Linn Lynch officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Dale Carnegie luncheon informative to local businesspeople

The recent executive luncheon to announce the opportunity to bring the Dale Carnegie Course to Sparta was an overwhelming success, according to Jim Crawford of Glyn Ed Newton & Associates, regional Carnegie franchisee.
The luncheon was sponsored by The Expositor as a means of exposing local and regional businesses to the overall areas on which the Dale Carnegie Course focuses in helping people turn potential into performance.
“We were extremely impressed and, quite frankly a bit surprised, at the number of attendees,” Crawford said.
“Typically, 15-20 percent of those making reservations won’t attend the luncheon.
This wasn’t the case last Tuesday.

Gunman robs Ace TV Rentals

Authorities responded to Ace TV Rentals at 219
Mose Drive after a masked gunman held store employees at gun point on Saturday. Officers made an attempt to pursue the subject and brought in a tracking unit from Cookeville.
The subject had apparently entered the back door, wearing black clothing and a black ski mask. According to the report, the robber held employees at gun point with a semi-automatic handgun and stole an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the building.
At approximately 7:10 p.m., Saturday, Ptl. Roy Gooch, Ptl. Jeff Glass and Lt. Ken McCormick of the Sparta Police Dept. arrived on the scene to investigate. … Read More

Complaints voiced against Justice Center offices

“Henry Foster himself told me I would have to deal with the F.B.I. to sign a complaint,” said Susan McDaniel at the recent meeting the White County Commission’s Steering B Committee.
“I have gone up there three times to sign a complaint and was denied.”
McDaniel appeared before Steering B Committee to lodge numerous complaints concerning the White County Jail and the manner in which she claimed she was treated by employees of the White County Circuit Court Clerk’s office.

Jerry Wayne Betterton, 47, of Sparta, passed away April 8, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Betterton was born August 28, 1954, in McMinnville, to Warren Crowder and Beulah Jones Betterton.
He was an accountant.
Survivors include his wife, Earline Kitchens Betterton of Sparta; father, Warren Crowder Betterton of Walling; mother, Beulah Jones Betterton of Walling; one sister and brother-in-law, Doris Jean and John Simmons of Walling; nieces and nephews, Dwayne and Jackie Howard of Sparta and Thomas and Jeanna Wood of Walling; brother-in-law, Frank Kitchens of Sparta; mother-in-law, Aileen Kitchens of Sparta; three great nieces and nephews; and several cousins.

Willard McKinley, 63, of Sparta, passed away April 8, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
McKinley was born May 7, 1938.
He was a heavy equipment operator for the Tenn. Dept. of Transportation.
McKinley was preceded in death by one brother, Woodrow McKinley.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred McKinley of Sparta; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Sandra McKinley of Murfreesboro; two step sons, Howard Clark of Mt. The school year is almost over, but many activities are left to enjoy before the last day of studies. However, all the excitement can come to an abrupt halt if a teenager chooses to drink and drive.
Juniors and seniors are looking forward to prom night and graduation and with the anticipation of upcoming festivities, teenagers are gearing up for a final farewell to the long hours of studying. Chicago arrests lead to local charges

Authorities discovered items consistent with the manufacture of methamphetamine when they investigated a residence, on Saylors Street. Apparently the items were located in a storage shed behind the property.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., Saturday, the Sparta Police Dept. was contacted in reference to a suspected meth lab at 116 Saylors Street. Sgt. Jeff Hutson and Ptl. Dale Dodson arrived at the location and met with Wanda Webb, of Knoxville, who is the owner of the property.

This Saturday marks the second annual Upper Cumberland Showcase for Women and the first 100 women through the door will receive a free decorative wrought iron garden stake (a $12 value), and The Expositor will hold drawings and games for cash prizes between noon and 2 p.m.
The 2002 Upper Cumberland Showcase for Women takes place on April 13 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
