Sally Trobaugh Kinnaird Franklin, 80, of Baxter, passed away July 25, 2002, at Bethseda Healthcare Center in Cookeville.
Franklin was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Putnam County, to Ira and Mary Chaffin Trobaugh.
She had been a housewife.
Franklin was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, David Kinnaird and Gary Kinnaird; two sisters, Maggie Trobaugh and Estamae Myatt; two brothers, Arline (Buddy) Trobaugh and Kenneth Trobaugh; and husband, Elmer Lee Kinnaird.

Pauline Bennett, 80, of Sparta, passed away July 26, 2002.
Bennett was born Jan. 2, 1922, in White County, to Walter Bransford Holman and Bessie Mae Cooke.
She had been employed at the shirt factory in the pressing department.
Bennett was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Artie King Bennett; one son, Vernon Bennett; three brothers, Stanford Holman, Herman Holman and Leon Holman; and one sister, Beulah Howard.

The educational system of a community is the backbone of development and can also be a factor by which many industries judge the suitability of locating within a new market. That is why specified testing of students’ progress is vital to a school system.
Earlier this year, approximately 425,000 students took the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program, which tests students in grades 3-8 on reading comprehension, language comprehension, math, science and social studies. The scores were reported as national percentiles and compared students to their peers nationwide.

Deputies complete Emergency Vehicle Operations Class

Corporal Jeffrey Bulakowski, Deputy Greg Sims and Deputy Charles Sims of the White County Sheriff’s Department participated in 40 hours of EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Class) training last week in Putnam County. There were between 30 and 35 deputies who participated in the EVOC training held in one week sessions in June and July.
Lt. Neal Blythe, Instructor Bill Harris and Sgt. Jimmy Eldridge of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department worked together training both White and Putnam County deputies in aspects of a high speed chase and organized a training course at the old Cookeville Airport.

Virgie Jane Cunningham, 89, passed away July 21, 2002.
Cunningham was born Aug. 27, 1912, in Cookeville, to Lidge F. “Doc” Miller and Leona Brown Miller.
She was a member of Hampton’s Crossroads Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for several years. Cunningham was a retired beautician.,
Cunningham was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Cunningham and two sisters, Sue Rudolph and Bessie Segler.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Jewell Brown Pollard, 93, of Sparta, passed away July 27, 2002.
Pollard was born March 11, 1909, in White County, to John Sparks and Rosie Pennington Sparks.
She has been employed at the shirt factory.
Survivors include two daughters, Anna Jean Tollison and Christine Baker both of Sparta; four grandchildren, Steve Tollison, Stacy G. Tollison, Michael Tollison and Robin Baker; and three great grandchildren, Shawn Tollison, Stephen Tollison and Demetria Tollison.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., July 29, 2002, at the chapel of Thurman Funeral Home with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Bro. Freddie Copeland will officiate.

James (Jim) Thomas Passons

James (Jim) Thomas Passons, 69, of Farragut, formerly of Sparta, passed away July 27, 2002, at U.T. Hospital in Knoxville.
Passons was a member and former elder at Farragut Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Passons was a retired pharmaceutical representative with Bristol-Myers Squibb. He was a graduate of Tennessee Technological University, where he played football. Passons also played football for SMU and the Knoxville Bears.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Varina Mai Rawlston Passons.

College Street fire possible arson

The State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating a recent blaze, at 11 East College Street. Authorities gathered evidence and believe arson is to blame.
The Emergency 911 Center originally dispatched authorities to the fire scene at approximately 9:07 p.m., Thursday. The structure was fully engulfed in flames when the Sparta Fire Department arrived.
Authorities said a subject was allegedly seen running from the blaze and Sgt. Jeff Hutson and Lt. Ken McCormick of the Sparta Police Department arrived to investigate.
According to authorities, the unoccupied home was owned by Thurman Funeral Home and
was allegedly uninhabitable and ready to be torn down.

Lucille Davis Hodges, 88, of Van Buren County, passed away July 27, 2002.
Hodges born March 5, 1914, in Mule Shoe, Texas, to George Davis and Ellen Wilson Davis.
She attended the Cummingsville United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Group. Hodges had been a school teacher.

Knowles was born June 3, 1915, in White County.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Minnie Holder Knowles.
Survivors include one son, Carson Knowles of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one great nephew, Chad Holder of Sparta; two granddaughters; and three great grandchildren.
