John D. Sparks, 86, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 28, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Sparks served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a school bus driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Thomas Sparks and Francis Brewington Sparks; three brothers; one sister; two sons, John Lee Sparks and Charles Thomas Sparks; one daughter, Charlene Margeson; one granddaughter; and one grandson.

Investigation continues for missing White County man

Authorities from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department said they are still investigating and following leads on missing person, David Lee Young, 41, of Sparta. Young was last seen at Johnson’s Chapel Recreation Area on Oct. 22, 2002.
If anyone has information on the whereabouts of Young, please contact the White County Sheriff’s Department at (931) 836-2700 or the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department at (615) 597-4935.

Ernest Estel “Runt” Brown, 82, of Doyle, passed away Oct. 29, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Brown was born June 14, 1920, in White County, to Beecher and Addie Elrod Brown.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a factory worker.

Hughes was born July 2, 1938, to Lester Hughes and Ruth Vinson Hughes

Ramon Garry Emery, 52, of Huntington, Ind., passed away Oct. 25, 2002, at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
Emery was born Jan. 23, 1950, in Cookeville, to Ramon C. Emery and Mary Ella Robinson Emery.
He served in the U.S. Army in Viet Nam and was also a member of the Indiana National Guard. He was a 1968 graduate of Monterey High School and had been a warehouse supervisor with Isolatek International for 20 years.

Search for missing man continues

Several rescue teams pulled together in search of a White County man, David Lee Young, over the weekend. According to authorities, Young is in his 40’s and allegedly went to harvest Ginseng in the Johnson’s Chapel area, on Tuesday, and has not been seen since.
Authorities said Young did not return home on Wednesday, and his boat and truck were found at Johnson’s Chapel boat dock. Members of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department are investigating.
The DeKalb County Rescue Squad began a search on Wednesday and after several days of tiring efforts,

Commission delays selection of judicial commissioners

Controversy among county commissioners has resulted in a one-month delay of selecting two judicial commissioners for the upcoming term.
Judicial commissioners for White County are appointed on a yearly basis. In the October county commission meeting each year, two recommendations to fill the positions are made to the full court. However, this October’s commission meeting saw the delay of hiring the warrant writers until the November meeting, which is past the official take-over date for the new positions.
