Kenneth Ray Cope, 70, of Spencer, passed away Nov. 13, 2002, at Veterans Hospital in Murfreesboro.
Cope was born Jan. 17, 1932, in Van Buren County to Milas Cope and Maggie Hickerson Cope.
He attended a Church of Christ and had been self-employed.
Cope was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Cope and James Cope and one sister, Claudine Burns.
Survivors include one daughter, Gail Muciek of McMinnville; one son, Michael Cope of Spencer; one brother, Charles Cope of Spencer; five grandchildren, Stacey Floyd of McMinnville, Justin Boyd of Murfreesboro, Jordan Boyd of Cookeville and Amanda Dunlap and K.C. Hubert H. Scott, 74, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 16, 2002, at Cumberland Medical Center.
Scott was born Sept. 8, 1928, in White County, to Marion and Lassie Prater Scott.
He was retired from Thomas Industries.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lynn; one sister, Jennie Detharidge; and four brothers, Burl Scott, James Scott, Joe Scott and Tom Scott.
Survivors include eight grandchildren, Kristy Scott, Tony Scott, Jonathon Yott, Jamie Yott, Michael Scott, Chad Scott, Cody Scott and Tracy Witt; six great grandchildren, Justin Yott, Taylor Yott, Anna Yott, Nathan Thomas, Roger Witt and Lonnie Witt; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Hutson Brown McNeal, 72, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 13, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
McNeal as born Dec. 22, 1929, in Putnam County, to Lemon Alva and Winnie Leona Guider Hutson.
She had been a restaurant owner.
McNeal was preceded in death by her parents.

Daisy Lydia Sullivan Davis, 69, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 15, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Davis was born Feb. 15, 1933, in Van Buren County, to Henry and Oma Williams Sullivan.
She was retired from Red Kap Industries.
Davis was preceded in death by her husband, George Donald Davis and one son, Jerry Davis.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Davis and Randall Eugene Davis both of Sparta; one brother, Sammy Sullivan of Spencer; two sisters, Barbara Potter of Spencer and Bonnie Bohannon of Sparta; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

He had been a diesel mechanic.

Elsie A. Rascoe, 85, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 16, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Rascoe was born June 22, 1917, in Missouri, to Williams F. and Myrtle A. Adams Helterbrand.
She had been a clerk.
Rascoe was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Rascoe and one son.
Survivors include a special friend, Robert Wright of McMinnville; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Rascoe of Conyers, Ga.; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Services were held at 3:30 p.m., Nov. 17, 2002, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Perry Clayton and Roy Dyer officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Cleo Curtis Anderson

Cleo Curtis Anderson, 90, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 14, 2002, at Bethesda Healthcare in Cookeville.
Anderson was born April 16, 1912, in Overton County, to David Arthur and Vina Fleming Curtis.
She attended Burgess Falls Baptist Church. Anderson had been a homemaker and employed in Dayton, Ohio, for several years as a department store sales clerk.
Anderson was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Anderson; four brothers, Haskell Curtis, Paskell Curtis, John H. Curtis and William Howard Curtis; and two sisters, Mary Beulah Brown and Lula Moore.

Nolen Troy Gilreath, 55, of Hillsboro, formerly of Sparta, passed away Nov. 15, 2002.
Gilreath was born May 9, 1947, in Putnam County, to William Melton Gilreath and Evelena Carter Gilreath.
He had been employed with Batesville Casket Company for 22 years.

Burglar is apprehended

Authorities placed Aubrey Lee Kilgore, 38, under arrest on burglary charges, after he allegedly broke into Sparta Discount Drugs at 425 North Spring Street over the weekend.
At approximately 12:51 a.m., Sunday, the Sparta Police Department responded to an alarm at Sparta Discount Drugs. When officers arrived, they found the front door had been knocked out with a concrete block and several types of medication had been stolen. The burglar had allegedly fled the scene.
According to Sgt. Jeff Hutson the Sparta Police Department and the White County Sheriff’s Department helped in the search for the alleged criminal for several hours in the area of Vista … CONTINUED


First responder assaulted and robbed

A first responder was assaulted while he was attempting to help a man who was allegedly laying in the roadway on Cricket Road.
According to Chad Pryor, a 1st responder with Central View Volunteer Fire Department, he was traveling to Cricket Road on Friday evening and as he got down to the bottom of the road, a man was laying in the roadway.
Pryor stopped and said he thought the man had been run over so he got out to check if he was alright. When Pryor was about 20 feet from the man, he said the man jumped up and shot at him. Pryor said … CONTINUED


Leo Club is off to a roaring start

The rewards of community service are numerous, and the youth of White County have joined the ranks of the adult population by participating in clubs designed specifically for their age bracket. During a special ceremony held Thursday, 36 students from White County Community High School signed the charter to officially establish a Leo Club.
Dewey Howard, Lions Club president, opened the meeting by introducing special guest Willard Cummings, past district governor, and his wife Carol, who are both active members of the Lions Club in Cookeville.
