Rev. Bonnie Edward “B.E.” Taylor, 84, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 24, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Murfreesboro.
Taylor was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Hickman County, to William and Venie Alice Bates Taylor.
He was a retired minister.
Survivors include his wife, Celia Dunn Taylor of Sparta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wilburn Hardy and Sylvia Taylor of Chicago, Ill. and Burless Edward “Lester” and Tootsie Taylor of Sparta; three grandchildren, Timothy Taylor of Sparta and Debra Bogumill and Denise Saitta both of Chicago, Ill.; and one great grandchild, Casey Taylor.

Virginia Elease Scott Newland, 59, of Quebeck, passed away Dec. 27, 2002, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Newland was born March 23, 1943, in Sparta, to Ambrose Dudley and Jennie Ledford Scott.
She had been employed in retail with a bakery store.
Newland was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kevin Newland; and six brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Thelma Pauline Cole of Mt. Juliet and Brenda Joyce Cantrell of McMinnville; three brothers, Dudley Eugene Scott, Gordon Ray Scott and Jimmie Clark Scott all of Quebeck; and several nieces and nephews.

Domino’s is locally owned and operated and has been in Sparta since July 2002. John and Danielle Powers, owners, help with non-profit organizations and fundraisers for White County schools. They offer free delivery and daily lunch specials. Domino’s opens at 10:30 a.m., 7
days a week; closes at 11 p.m. on weeknights and 12 a.m. on weekends. For convenience, they also have a drive-thru window for their customers. Domino’s is located at 402 North Spring St.

Holiday celebrations are quickly coming to an end, and a new year with new beginnings is on the minds of every White County citizen.
The last week of each year and the first week of the new year has traditionally been the time when The Expositor reviews the top 20 news stories of the year. Hazel Marie Emberton, 74, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 26, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Emberton attended Smithville Church of God and had been a factory worker and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom Summers and Hessie Elkins Summers and her husband, Dean Emberton.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Edison Cox of Sparta; two granddaughters, Greta Moore of Cookeville and Cheryl Lee of Georgia; two grandsons, Jeff Caldwell and Derrick Cox both of Sparta; and nine great grandchildren.

Walter Pleasant England, 78, of Bourbonnais, Ill., passed away Dec. 19, 2002, at Olympia Fields Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill.
England was born April 18, 1924, in Sparta, to John Edgar and Minnie Bell Shelby England.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. England was retired from Ford Motor Company in Chicago, Ill.

Sparta man faces embezzlement charges

A Sparta man is facing embezzlement charges after Smithville Police and a food company investigator discovered several thousands of dollars missing from a Smithville grocery store.
Smithville Officer Gary Harris told The Middle Tennessee Times 25-year-old Brian Keith Brock, of Gaines Street, Sparta, was recently by Putnam County authorities and extradited to DeKalb County.
Brock was indicted on December 3 by the DeKalb County Grand Jury on charges he embezzled over $17,000 of funds from the Smithville Food Lion store.
