Mock disaster keeps emergency services ready for action

“I thought the drill went well,” said Jerry Cole, emergency management director, referring to the mock disaster drill held last week. “It’s important everyone works together.”
Cole and representatives from other emergency services departments held a roundtable discussion Wednesday morning to critique the drill, which took place at Life Care Center of Sparta.
According to Cole, Bart Walker, administrator of Life Care, had originally requested assistance with an in-house drill, which is required for specific recertification procedures. Upon talking with personnel who were assisting Walker with the plans, it was decided to incorporate the drill into a mock disaster for all emergency services departments.

Laura Mae Binkley

Laura Mae Binkley, 82, of Spencer, passed away Dec. 17, 2002, at Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Rutherford County.
Binkley was born June 4, 1920, in Van Buren County, to J.D. Mills Sr. and Lena Keyt Mills.
She attended the Baptist Church and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Binkley was retired from the Shirt Factory.
Binkley was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Binkley.

Raymond Edward Woody

Raymond Edward Woody, 59, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 17, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Woody was born March 21, 1943, in Putnam County, to Floyd Woody Sr. and Rettie Trisdale Woody.
He had been a brick mason.
Woody was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Edna Louise Henry and Hazel Bryant; and one brother, James Carl Woody.

The Christmas stockings have been hung by the fireplace with care. (Well, maybe they had to be hung by the heating vent, if there was not a fireplace.) Santa will make his arrival into Sparta on December 24, and all the children (and, yes, that includes those who are above 50 and still think they are kids) will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of the jolly big man, who loves to dress in red velour, adorned with white fur. (I do not think Ralph Lauren would approve of this ensemble.)

Miller appointed new assessor of property

The small courtroom of the White County Courthouse was filled to capacity on Monday night, as the audience awaited the final decision of the county commission about the new assessor of property. Within 15 minutes, the suspense was over for the 18 applicants and their well-wishers, as Tina Miller, current deputy assessor, was voted to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Kathy Hunter.

Ella Thurman Morgan, 75, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 14, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Morgan was born Feb. 15, 1927, in White County, to Waymon and Princy Lee Turner Thurman.
She had been the co-owner of Morgan Furniture.
Morgan was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mollye Thurman Swindell; and one brother, Joe Thurman.

Payne was born Jan. 26, 1923, in White County, to Charles Houston and Cassie Glasner Payne.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been employed at Thomas Industries.

Frank Lloyd Wright, 76, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 15, 2002.
Wright was born July 15, 1926, in Franklin, Ohio, to Lloyd Wright and Elizabeth Wilmoth Wright.
He was retired from the Merchant Marines and U.S. Air Force, where he as an aviation mechanic. Wright was a member of Sparta Masonic Lodge #99 F&AM and the American Legion.

Charles William Dodson, 80, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 12, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Dodson was born March 12, 1922, in Kentucky, to Fletcher Dodson and Hazel Etta Miller Dodson.
He served in World War II and had been employed at Cumberland Manufacturing.
Dodson was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Lucille Dodson of Sparta and one daughter and son-in-law, Rachel Louise and John Edward Bennett of Sparta.
