James Edward Cox, 73, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 10, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Cox was born Oct. 22, 1929, in White County, to Green Cox and Rosa Lee White Cox.
He had been employed at the Shirt Factory.
Cox was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, George Cox, Beecher Cox, Henry Cox and one infant brother; and two sisters, Dora Mae Cox and Mary Lou Cox.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Ollie Rhea Cox Geer and Bob Cox of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.

Gilbert Guy, 70, passed away Dec. 8, 2002.
Guy was born Feb. 16, 1932, in Van Buren County, to Clyde J. Guy and Opal Northcutt guy.
He attended a Church of Christ and was retired from the railroad, where he had worked for North Fork Southern AC & Division.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Jean guy of Chattanooga; one son, Jonathan Guy of Chattanooga; mother, Opal guy of Spencer; one sister, Clydene Roberts of Spencer; and one niece, Jamie Simmons and her family.

Life keeps blooming for Daisy

There is an old adage that says ‘eight is great,’ but for Daisy Belle Young, 80 is even greater!
Young celebrated her 80th birthday on Dec. 8, 2002, at Hickory Valley Baptist Church, where she is a member. The celebration, complete with lots of food, gifts, family and friends was given by her children.
Approximately 150 guests attended the event to share fond memories and celebrate the special day with the guest of honor.
Daisy Belle Jones was born Dec. 8, 1922, in Sparta, to Fannie and Estell Jones.

E-911 director and chairman refuse to address employee’s complaint

“I’m not going to air personnel problems in a board meeting,” said Harry Cole, E-911 director. “I don’t believe the first time we discuss this should be with the newspaper here.”
Cole’s statement was made in direct reference to a part-time employee, Stephanie Hickey, who had come to the board meeting to ask about the rotation of work schedules. “There are two of you commissioners that have been running your mouth about what B.K. wants to do,” said B.K. Luna, county commissioner for the third district, as he addressed Steering Committee B on Monday night. “If you’ve got something to say, just come to me and say it.”

Illegal beer sales net five violations

An unexpected “sting” operation regarding underage beer sales within the city limits of Sparta found nine businesses and their employees were following the rules. However, employees of five other establishments were issued citations to answer the charge of selling beer to a minor.
Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth said Detective Allen Selby, of Sparta Police Department, and Richard Bryant, of the Cookeville division of Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission (T.A.B.C.) initiated the plan between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., Dec. 5, 2002. The two law enforcement officers sent an 18-year-old undercover informant into all 14 businesses that sell beer in Sparta.

Horace Gaines “Red” Lawson, 79, of Centerline, Mich. formerly of Sparta, passed away Nov. 25, 2002.
Lawson was born Nov. 24, 1923, to James C. “Jim” and Cindy Etta Cunningham Lawson.
He was retired from the U. S. Marine Corps and had served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Lawson was also retired from Ford Motor Company.
Lawson was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Carrie Abney Lawson; three brothers, Gordon B. Lawson, James Earl Lawson and Virgil Lee Lawson; and one sister, Jane Lawson Hogan.

Anderson was born Dec. 14, 1932, in White County, to Roy and Myrtle Poore Anderson

Ethel B. Holland, 81, of Sparta, passed away at White County Community Hospital.
Holland was born Feb. 23, 1931, to William Billings and Mary Young Billings.
She attended Peeled Chestnut Methodist Church and had been a beautician.
Holland was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Joe Tom Billings and Oscar Billings; and four sisters, Willie Lafevers, Ada Templeton, Betty Roberts and Maude Huskins.

Charles Frederick Gore

Charles Frederick Gore, 56, of Lebanon, passed away Dec. 6, 2002, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Gore was the son Charles W. Gore and Lucille Gore.
He was a member of the Church of Christ. Gore graduated from Tennessee Technological University in 1968. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from November 1968 to December 1971 and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain, after serving overseas. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Ruth Copeland Fields, 58, of Doyle, passed away Dec. 5, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Fields was born Sept. 27, 1944, in Overton County, to Hugh Copeland and Maggie Parrish Copeland.
She had been a homemaker.
Fields was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Lisa K. Copeland.
Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Judd of Doyle and Bridgette Thompson of Sparta; two brothers, Doug Copeland of Nashville and Norman Copeland of Livingston; one sister, Patsy Sherard of Nashville; and three grandchildren, Kelly Judd, Michael Judd and Robin Judd all of Sparta.

Fred Henry Lemmerz, 58, of Spencer, passed away Dec. 6, 2002,
at White County Community Hospital.
Lemmerz was born Nov. 17, 1944, in Detroit, Mich., to Henry and Gertrude Lemmerz.
He had been an electrician.
Lemmerz was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother, Gertrude Lemmerz of Sparta; one son, Jeffrey Scott Lemmerz of Michigan; one grandchild, Merissa; two nephews, DeWayne Brandt and Douglas Brandt; and special friend, Dorothy Frasier of Spencer.
No services were announced.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Local teachers receive grants from Bridgestone/ Firestone

The educational system in White County has continued to grow by leaps and bounds over the past several years. In an effort to continue the development of quality instruction, Bridgestone/Firestone recently awarded grants to 14 White County teachers.
Bridgestone/Firestone’s Warren County Plant awarded $600 grants to 50 area teachers during a special ceremony, which was held Dec. 5, 2002, at the Learning Center at the Bridgestone/ Firestone plant in Morrison.

Parramoure arrested for DUI

According to a report filed by Deputy Charles Dennis, of White County Sheriff Department, on Dec. 7, 2002, at approximately 8:40 p.m. he observed a vehicle stop an estimated 50 feet before the vehicle actually approached a stop sign at Old Kentucky Road and Roberts-Matthews Highway.
Dennis said he followed the vehicle and observed the vehicle run off the right side of the roadway. According to the report, Dennis made a traffic stop on the vehicle and came in contact with the driver, Mr. Sandy Rene Parramoure.
