William Glenn “Buddy” Williams, 64, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 26, 2002.
Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Steele Williams; one son, Willie Williams; his parents, Rosie and Bill Williams, and two sisters, Ruby Johnson and Linda Goodwin.

Frank Cyler Marshall, 71, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 26, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Marshall was born June 15, 1931, in Shreveport, La., to Carlton Herman and Velma Louise Whittle Marshall.
He was disabled.
Marshall was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, “Red” Marshall.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Royce Lee and Gene Jackson of Williston; three grandchildren, Angela Austin, Justin Bing and Gabriel Bing; three step grandchildren, Cora Jo Jackson, Mindy Jackson and Jennifer Jackson; 11 great grandchildren; and special friends, Elva Smith of Williston and the Clarence Leonard family of Sparta.

Sue Phifer Savage, 82, of Doyle, passed away Nov. 29, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Savage was born Jan. 18, 1920, in White County, to Eddie W. Phifer and Vernie Mason Phifer.
She was retired from Mallory Controls.
Savage was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Fred Phifer.

Elmer Lee “Toots” Herd, 79, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 29, 2002, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.
Herd was born May 14, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., to Joseph Edward and Lucy Denny Herd.
He was retired from self-employment with Cumberland Valley Shows.
Herd was preceded in death by his wife, Clata Moore Herd; his parents; and two brothers, Charles Herd and James Herd.
Survivors include one son, Jack Herd of Nashville; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lucy and Jim Barnes of Dunlap; one grandchild, Gene Clayton Barnes of Nashville; one sister-in-law, Willie Davis of Cookeville; and special friend, Lenora Green of Sparta.

Christmas Tour of Homes to benefit music department

If walking through a holiday wonderland of decorations and being serenaded with favorite Christmas tunes sounds like the ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon, make plans on Dec. 8, 2002, 2-4:30 p.m., to tour some of White County’s most beautiful homes, which will be adorned with all the goodies of the holiday season.
The White County High School Music Department will be sponsoring the tour, with proceeds benefiting the department. Sean Powell, band director, along with Terri Dickerson, choir director, are looking forward to the holiday event, which has been reprised after numerous requests for the tour.

O’Conner dismisses jail administrator

Since he was sworn into office as Sheriff of White County on Sept. 1, 2002, James O’Conner has experienced some of the biggest challenges of his life. He said he likes to take his time to evaluate all aspects of a situation before making any decisions, and O’Conner followed his usual plan of strategy before the recent dismissals of jail administrator and corrections supervisor, P.J. Hardy and Lt. Darren Parsons, assistant.
According to informed sources, O’Conner had dismissed Hardy and Parsons after allegations of two corrections officers assaulting an inmate. O’Conner told The Expositor, the incident was not the catalyst for the firing of Hardy … Read More


Hunter thanks White Countians as she seeks new path in life

“I want to thank the people of White County for placing their trust in me for the past 11 years,” said Kathy Hunter, who recently resigned as assessor of property for White County. “All my love and gratitude go out to them.”
