Joseph Jean-Guy Trudel, 69, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 4, 2002.
Trudel was born Dec. 14, 1932, in St. Ludger Quebec, Canada, to Jean-Baptiste Trudel and Marieann Belgarde Trudel.
He had been a tree surgeon and carpenter.
Trudel was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Lorraine Lecouffe Trudel of Sparta; children, Jeanne Marie Trudel Winfield of Murfreesboro, Michael Joseph Trudel of Cookeville, Stephen John Trudel of Sparta and Robin Guy Trudel of Livingston; one brother, Jules Trudel of Durommondville Quebec, Canada; two sisters, Jeanne Spiller of Florida and Aline Michaud of LacMegantic Quebec, Canada; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Marty Coffee, 41, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 1, 2002.
Coffee was born April 7, 1961, in Carthage, to Maggie Lee Kellow and Marcus Coffee.
He had worked in construction as a roofer.
Survivors include his wife Beverly J. Trexler Coffee of Sparta; four sons, Roger Fletcher, Brian Coffee and Joseph Coffee all of Smyrna and Cody Coffee of Carthage; one step daughter, Bonnie Reightler; parents, Mark and Maggie Coffee of Riddleton; two brothers and one sister-in-law, William Coffee of Riddleton and Phillip and Lora Coffee of the Hogan’s Creek Community; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Ricky Harris and Joann and David Spivey, all of Riddleton.… CONTINUED

Sarah Julie Davis Simpson, 64, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 1, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Simpson was born Feb. 21, 1938, in Sparta, to Tommy Lee and Buna Jones Davis.
She had been a housewife.
Simpson was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Gordon Simpson of Sparta; one daughter, Karen Renee Simpson of Sparta; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Virginia and Marvin Saylors
and Nancy Wilmoth all of Sparta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas Lee Davis Jr. and Ruth Davis and Owen and Debbie Davis all of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.

Sue Phifer Savage, 82, of Doyle, passed away Nov. 29, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Savage was born Jan. 18, 1920, in White County, to Eddie W. Phifer and Vernie Mason Phifer.
She was retired from Mallory Controls.
Savage was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Fred Phifer.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Savage of Doyle; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Donald Brock of Sparta; two sisters, Ellen Wendling of Doyle and Kathleen Sparkman of Baxter; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Janette Phifer of Sparta; two grandsons and their spouses, Terry and Marsha Brock and Tim and Gena Brock all of Sparta; … CONTINUED


Hilleary visits to thank supporters

Congressman Van Hilleary made an appearance at the White County Courthouse Wednesday, thanking locals for their support in his recent governor’s race and bidding farewell to his constituents.
Hilleary thanked the residents who were present for their support in the past and shared his feelings about Sparta and White County.
“I just wanted to come by and say thank you,” he stated. “White County and I have always had somewhat of a love affair. I think, for the main part, most White Countians agree with me. This is a neat community, with community-minded people. It’s just a great place.”

The front door of the Don and Helen Pate residence, in the Fancher’s Mill area, is in full holiday attire in preparation for this Sunday, when the White County High School Music Department will host a Christmas Tour of Homes, from 2-4:30 p.m., Dec. 8. Homes on the tour include the Pates, Robert and Sylvia Kennedy, Susan Wilson and P.J. and Patricia Hardy. Dollar General employee arrested for theft

After an investigation from the loss prevention department of Dollar General Store, a 19-year-old employee was arrested for theft of property.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, Tracie Nicole Phillips allegedly stole between $10,000 and $20,000 in merchandise from Dollar General Store on Mose Drive, where she was employed. Guth said the report stated Phillips had been taking the merchandise over a one-year period of time.
Harold Blankenship, investigator for Sparta Police Department, secured the warrants on Phillips and is investigating the case.
Phillips court date is Dec. 6.

Hunter thanks White Countians as she seeks new path in life

“I want to thank the people of White County for placing their trust in me for the past 11 years,” said Kathy Hunter, who recently resigned as assessor of property for White County. “All my love and gratitude go out to them.”
Hunter, who has recently remarried, spoke with The Expositor during a telephone interview Sunday from her new residence in Alabama. “I have been very blessed by the citizens of White County, but sometimes a person comes to a crossroads in their life where life-changing decisions have to be made.”

O’Conner dismisses jail administrator

Since he was sworn into office as Sheriff of White County on Sept. 1, 2002, James O’Conner has experienced some of the biggest challenges of his life. He said he likes to take his time to evaluate all aspects of a situation before making any decisions, and O’Conner followed his usual plan of strategy before the recent dismissals of jail administrator and corrections supervisor, P.J. Hardy and Lt. Darren Parsons, assistant.
According to informed sources, O’Conner had dismissed Hardy and Parsons after allegations of two corrections officers assaulting an inmate. O’Conner told The Expositor, the incident was not the catalyst for the firing of Hardy … CONTINUED

Frank Cyler Marshall

Frank Cyler Marshall, 71, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 26, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Marshall was born June 15, 1931, in Shreveport, La., to Carlton Herman and Velma Louise Whittle Marshall.
He was disabled.
Marshall was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, “Red” Marshall.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Royce Lee and Gene Jackson of Williston; three grandchildren, Angela Austin, Justin Bing and Gabriel Bing; three step grandchildren, Cora Jo Jackson, Mindy Jackson and Jennifer Jackson; 11 great grandchildren; and special friends, Elva Smith of Williston and the Clarence Leonard family of Sparta.
