Officials hope mock trial deters prom night drinking

“If we can save just one life by doing this,” said Deputy Doug Goff, resource officer at White County High School (WCHS), “then everything we’ve done will be worth it.”
Goff spoke candidly about the upcoming mock trial, which is designed to give high school seniors a vivid look at the reality of drinking and driving. “With prom night coming up this weekend, we felt we needed to focus on what can happen when you make the wrong choices,” he said.

Extra cash is always a blessing in disguise, and The Expositor is giving White Countians an opportunity to find a hidden treasure to win money and prizes.
“I can hardly wait until the treasure hunt begins,” said Expositor promotions manager Christy Hampton. “This will be the first year for us to have this contest, but we have heard a lot of positive feedback from the community.”

Banquet and golf tourney will benefit Gracemoor Inc.

Mark the calendar for a night of good food and entertainment, drag out that nine-iron and make plans for the second annual Gracemoor Benefit Banquet and Golf Tournament, May 16 and 17, 2003.
The gala event will begin at 6:30 p.m., May 16, 2003, in the fellowship hall at Sparta First United Methodist Church, with proceeds to benefit Gracemoor Inc., a sanctuary for those seeking refuge from violent or abusive situations. Barney DeWayne Guy, 41, of Sparta, passed away April 19, 2003.
Guy was born Oct. 4, 1961, to William Glynn Guy and Mamie VanWinkle Guy.
He had been employed at Ben Lomand Telephone Co.
Survivors include his wife, Nora Bailey Guy of Sparta; two children, Ethan Guy and Julianne Guy both of Sparta; parents, William Glynn and Mamie Guy of Sparta; two sisters, Tammy Swindell of Sparta and Libby VanWinkle of Spencer; and one brother, Todd Guy of Sparta.
Services will be at 10 a.m., April 22, 2003, at Hickory Valley Baptist Church with burial in Hickory Valley Cemetery. Bro. Doug Benningfield will officiate.

Knowles was born in White County, to Learner and Nannie Knowles.
Services will be April 21, 2003, at Backer Funeral Home in Akron, Ohio, with burial to follow in Akron.
Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Francis Mahan, 59, of Cookeville, passed away April 13, 2003 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mahan was born April 14, 1943, in Baxter, to Solon T. Jared and Flossie Bush Jared (Vetitoe).
She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, Willie Vetitoe.
Survivors include her husband, Roscoe M. Mahan of Cookeville; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathleen Mahan of Cookeville; one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and John Turner of Loganville, Ga.; one brother, Clarence Jared of Cookeville; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Abby, Jared and Andrew Turner.
Services were April 15, 2003, at Whitson Funeral Home, Cookeville, with entombment at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Charles V. Thompson, 53, of Sparta, passed away April 14, 2003 at Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville.
Thompson was born June 4, 1949, in White County, to Charlie V. Thompson and Charcey Goss Thompson.
He was employed at a wrecker company.
Thompson was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Thompson; his mother, Charcey Slack; two sons, Nick Thompson and Derick Cavanah all of Sparta, one brother, Terry Thompson of Smyrna and one sister, Nancy Vaughn of McMinnville.

Daniels was born May 9, 1933, in White County, to John Wesley Tumblin and Fannie Cox Tumblin.
She had been a homemaker.
Daniels was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, J.F. Tumblin.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Carolyn Ward, Wesley and Doris Ward, Roger and Polly Copeland and James and April Golden, all of Cookeville; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
