Charles Ralph Anderson

Charles Ralph Anderson, 58, of Sparta, passed away May 10, 2003.
Anderson was born July 12, 1944, in White County, to Ralph Anderson and Jewel Marie Reeves Anderson.
He served as sheriff of White County from 1990-1998 and was most recently employed as chief deputy at Van Buren County Sheriff Department.
Anderson was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Anderson; step father, Joe Wilson; and one brother, Johnny Wilson.
He is survived by his mother, Jewel Reeves Anderson Wilson of Sparta; wife, Linda Anderson of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Sonya Anderson Daniels and Sandy Daniels of Sparta; step daughters, Melissa Richards and Stacia Knight both of … CONTINUED


Citizens Bank announces promotions

Robert Verble, president of Citizens Bank of White County, recently announced two promotions.
Howard Hutcherson has been promoted to the position of assistant vice-president. Hutcherson graduated from Mississippi State University in 1990. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in General Business, with a specialization in management, finance and real estate. Hutcherson has been working in banking since 1993.
He and his wife, Melanie, have two children, Courtney, 10, and Cody, 4. “I look forward to meeting and serving the people of this community,” said Hutcherson. “I hope that with my experience, I can be an asset, not only to Citizens BanK, but to the community as well.”

The sweet memories of high school teenagers filled the room, and, once again, every “boy” and “girl” was 18 years old, reliving the most precious days of their lives. Although the calendar denoted the year as 2003, it was truly 1943 all over again.
“Do you remember when we beat Monterey 44 to 0?” said Edsel England, former member of the renowned basketball team.

I am Chad Steven Marcum, valedictorian of the 2003 graduating class of White County High School.
My parents are Carl and Dorcas Marcum.
I have one sister, Callie, who is nine years old.
My grandparents are Alton and Pearl Marcum, and Ruth Stewart and the late James Edward Stewart.
I have lived all of my life in the Cassville community and attended Cassville Elementary School for my entire elementary school career.
After graduating from sixth grade, I moved on to White County Middle School.

Engineer talks about flooding

“What we’ve done out there has changed it very little,” said Mike Callahan, engineer for the new White County recreational facility.
Callahan spoke to members of Steering Committee A last Monday about the flooding problems at a residence near the ballpark. Apparently James and Michelle Anderson had purchased an additional lot adjoining their property from an unidentified individual. Because of recent heavy rains, the lot has been flooded, and Michelle apparently feels it is the county’s responsible to remedy the problem.
According to several of the committee members, the Andersons allegedly knew the lot would flood when they purchased it. Callahan said the main flooding … CONTINUED

“We’ve got a compactor with a busted head and the transmission out of a dozer,” said commissioner B.K. Luna, ” and I’ve had reports of a truck that ran three stop signs.”
Luna had a list in hand Monday night, as he addressed other members of Steering Committee B. He read several complaints from concerned citizens and talked about problems of which he had personal knowledge. Commissioner Loyd Hutchings, who retired from the landfill several years ago, agreed with Luna there were several problems that needed immediate attention.

Martin Ross Griffin, 69, of Smithville, passed away May 6, 2003.
Griffin was preceded in death by his parents, Ransom and Edna Colwell Griffin and one brother, Harold Griffin.
He had been a carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Izena Young Griffin of Smithville; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Steve Merriman of Smithville; one son, James Griffin of Smithville; two grandsons, Steve Merriman and Jake Merriman both of Smithville; two brothers, S.T. Ray Thomas, 77, of Cookeville, passed away May 9, 2003.
Thomas was the son of the late Chester and Hattie Allison Thomas.
He had been a member of Gentry’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Thomas Insulating Co.
Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Dezzel Lafever Thomas; five brothers, Fred, Clifford, Enoch, Arden and Holland Thomas; and four sister, Myrtle Allison, Pauline Sherrell, Mildred Shelton and Arvie Martin.

Maxine May Kupiec

Maxine May Kupiec, 83, of Cookeville, passed away May 7, 2003, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Kupiec was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to David Thomas Aitken and Herle May Lee Aitken.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Bernard Joseph Kupiec of Cookeville; two sons, Bernie Kupiec
Jr. of Cookeville and David Kupiec of Japan; one sister, Ruth Clark of Cookeville; one grandchild, Ember May Swan of Japan; and three great grandchildren, Reeve Swan, Haven Swan and Pierce Swan all of Japan.
