The sweet memories of high school teenagers filled the room, and, once again, every “boy” and “girl” was 18 years old, reliving the most precious days of their lives. Although the calendar denoted the year as 2003, it was truly 1943 all over again.
“Do you remember when we beat Monterey 44 to 0?” said Edsel England, former member of the renowned basketball team.

Engineer talks about flooding

“What we’ve done out there has changed it very little,” said Mike Callahan, engineer for the new White County recreational facility.
Callahan spoke to members of Steering Committee A last Monday about the flooding problems at a residence near the ballpark. Apparently James and Michelle Anderson had purchased an additional lot adjoining their property from an unidentified individual. Because of recent heavy rains, the lot has been flooded, and Michelle apparently feels it is the county’s responsible to remedy the problem.

Freddie Martin, 47, of Spencer, passed away May 12, 2003, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Martin was born Jan. 25, 1956, in Van Buren County, to Elmer Martin and Luedean Sullivan Martin.
He had been a timber cutter.
Martin was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Martin and grandparents, Joe and Mary Martin and Walter and Novella Sullivan.

Vickie Darlene Jessup, 45, of Spencer, passed away May 13, 2003.
Jessup was born Dec. 11, 1957, in Tell City, Ind., to Victor Hempfling and Janice Clark.

Ray Thomas, 77, of Cookeville, passed away May 9, 2003.
Thomas was the son of the late Chester and Hattie Allison Thomas.
He had been a member of Gentry’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Thomas Insulating Co.

Margaret Preston Gilley, 81, of Smithville, passed away May 10, 2003.
Gilley attended the Methodist Church and had been a merchant. She was also a charter member of Short Mountain Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Gilley and parents, Hervey and Verna Preston.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Jean Ann and Clifford Knudson of McMinnville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Rickey and Dorothy Gilley of Morrison and Flint Gilley of Smithville; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Holman encourages other cancer survivors

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. One man in six will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime, and for Walt Holman, these statistic became very real when he was diagnosed almost three years ago.
“We had a health fair at Federal Mogul,” said Holman, who has been employed at the facility for 29 years. “There was a special on blood work for the PSA test.”

Civil War veteran to receive grave marker

Thanks to the efforts of several dedicated individuals, Civil War veteran Amos Moss has finally received a granite monument 93 years after his death.
Jack Bussell, White County Veterans Service Officer, helped Moss’ great-great granddaughter, Doris Myers Scanlon, and White County historian Mary Holland, obtain the grave marker. A special ceremony will be at 6 p.m., May 22, 2003, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The Veterans Honor Guard from the Monterey-Cookeville area will conduct the military rites.
Another great-great granddaughter, Geneva Rainey, provided most of the Civil War records and documents that aided in the historical depiction of Moss’ service. Although Rainey had access to the written … Read More

Charles Ralph Anderson, 58, of Sparta, passed away May 18, 2003.
Anderson was born July 12, 1944, in White County, to Ralph Anderson and Jewel Marie Reeves Anderson.
He served as sheriff of White County from 1990-1998 and was most recently employed as chief deputy at Van Buren County Sheriff Department.
Anderson was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Anderson; step father, Joe Wilson; and one brother, Johnny Wilson.
