Clara Mae Sherrell Simpson, 86, of Sparta, passed away April 29, 2003, at White County Community Hospital.
Simpson was born Nov. 11, 1916, in DeKalb County, to Dave and Kate Sherrell.
She had been a secretary at Simpson Appliance.
Simpson was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Simpson; one son, Harry James Simpson; one daughter, Kay Snodgrass; four granddaughters; and two brothers.

Jernigan was born Sept. 4, 1943, in White County, to Verd Richard Bumbalough and Eula Irene Brewington Bumbalough.
She was a member of Southside Church of Christ in Manchester. Jernigan was a loving and dedicated housewife and had worked at LSI Marcole Inc., in Manchester.

Helen Ruth McBride Bell, formerly of Sparta, passed away May 5, 2003, in Eastpointe, Mich.
Bell was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford B. Bell.
Survivors include two children, Carolyn Cleland and Pamela Bernard and husband, Donald; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three brothers, Marvin McBride, Robert McBride and Herbert McBride; and one sister, Mildred McBride.
Services will be at 2 p.m., May 9, 2003, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Bohannon Cemetery. Bro. Freddie Copeland will officiate.

Brown injured in Friday crash

A White County man suffered injuries when the truck he was driving left the roadway and struck several pine trees, before coming to a stop.
According to Trooper Mike Jolley, of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, he received the call at approximately 8:48 p.m., May 2, 2003. James R. Brown, 21, of Walling, was traveling on Pollard Road, in a 1993 Ford Ranger, when he failed to properly negotiate a curve. Jolley said the vehicle left the road on the left side, scattering debris for several feet.

Severe storms hit Tennessee during the early morning hours, with extensive damage reported in numerous counties by Nashville news media. White County was no exception, with downed power lines and trees blocking roadways.
Law enforcement and fire departments were kept busy during the pre-dawn storms, which uprooted trees in the City of Sparta, as well as in various sections of the county. Crews from local utilities worked to restore power to homes without power, as high winds showed no mercy for the fragile lines.

Breast cancer survivors prepare for Relay For Life

“My biggest fear was for my daughters,” said Sandy Shuburg, as she spoke about her diagnosis of breast cancer in 1991. “I was worried my daughters would get it.”
Shuburg currently serves as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery program for women diagnosed with breast cancer. She has a positive outlook on life when she talks about her experience with a disease that usually instills a great sense of fear in most cancer patients. “I really had a good attitude,” she said. “I never got sad, and I didn’t cry.”
