The White County Fine Arts Department thrilled crowds Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at their annual musical presentation.
This year’s selection was the Music Man, a play based on a con man’s arrival into a small town and his effect on the townspeople.
It was extremely entertaining and included humor, music and emotion.
Chad Marcum portrayed an outstanding character, Harold Hill, the music man who falls in love with Marian Paroo, played by Rebekah Webster.
The entire production reflected talent, dedication and determination. Students worked until 1:30 a.m., the morning of opening night, to assure the success of the production.

Heavy rains pelt White County

White County has seen more rain in the past 72 hours than usually experienced in an entire season. According to Jerry Cole, emergency management director, approximately 10 inches has fallen since the beginning of the severe storms on Monday.
Several roads have been closed in White County. Highway 84, which is also known as River Road, was the first road in the City of Sparta to officially close to traffic. The Calfkiller River showed no mercy, as water quickly rose, requiring residents to take an alternate route into Sparta.

Ruby Frances Stewart Grimmer, 73, of Phelan, Calif., formerly of Sparta, passed away April 19, 2003.
She was born June 25, 1929, in Sparta, to Virgil Reece and Zeta Frances Stewart.
Grimmer was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jess D. Grimmer; two sons, Stephen Jess and Dana Ross Grimmer; one sister, Leron Simpson; and one brother, Randall Stewart.
Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Terry D. Charlie Pauline Ballard, 94, of Sparta, passed away May 6, 2003, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Ballard was born May 11, 1908, in White County, to Charlie Jones and Mary Lollar Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; sisters; and husband.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma Wright of Sparta and Nadene Churchill of Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren, James William “Bill” and Dessie True of Prue, Ind., Capt. Frank M. Alice Rozell Jernigan, 59, of Sparta, passed away May 3, 2003, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Jernigan was born Sept. 4, 1943, in White County, to Verd Richard Bumbalough and Eula Irene Brewington Bumbalough.
She was a member of Southside Church of Christ in Manchester. Jernigan was a loving and dedicated housewife and had worked at LSI Marcole Inc., in Manchester.
Jernigan was preceded in death by her father.

Ernest C. Larsen, 80, of Harrison Township, Mich., passed away April 26, 2003.
Larsen was born July 24, 1922, in Detroit, Mich., to Richard and Caroline Larsen.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was given an honorable discharge a short time later to rejoin his former employer, Murray Corporation, as an inspector of the B17 Flying Fortress.
Larsen had retired from serving as a State Farm insurance agent, after 40 years of service. He was a member of numerous services organizations in the town where he resided.

Helen Ruth McBride Bell, formerly of Sparta, passed away May 5, 2003, in Eastpointe, Mich.
Bell was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford B. Bell.
Survivors include two children, Carolyn Cleland and Pamela Bernard and husband, Donald; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three brothers, Marvin McBride, Robert McBride and Herbert McBride; and one sister, Mildred McBride.
Services will be at 2 p.m., May 9, 2003, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Bohannon Cemetery. Bro. Freddie Copeland will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clara Mae Sherrell Simpson, 86, of Sparta, passed away April 29, 2003, at White County Community Hospital.
Simpson was born Nov. 11, 1916, in DeKalb County, to Dave and Kate Sherrell.
She had been a secretary at Simpson Appliance.
Simpson was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Simpson; one son, Harry James Simpson; one daughter, Kay Snodgrass; four granddaughters; and two brothers.

Patsy Ann Simmons, 50, of Sparta, passed away May 5, 2003, at White County Community Hospital.
Simmons was born Aug. 6, 1952, in Crossville, to George Edward Thompson and Mildred Anettia Bolin Thompson.
She had been a nursing home aid.
Simmons was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, John Simmons of Sparta; two sisters, Debra Irene Evans and Dorothy Rachel Clarkson both of Anderson, Ind.; three brothers, Tony Gene Thompson of Cookeville, David Paul Thompson of Anderson, Ind. and Matthew Scott Thompson of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.
