OxyContin abuse felt locally

“Euphoria is the biggest thing they experience,” said Alan Tatum, pharmacist and owner of Payless Family Pharmacy, as he spoke about the schedule II narcotic OxyContin. “The street value is general $1 per milligram, so one 40-milligram tablet, which is a relatively common strength, is $40 on the street.”
Tatum talked very candidly about the controversy surrounding the highly addictive drug. Noted talk-show host Rush Limbaugh recently admitted that he is addicted to painkillers, with OxyContin being one of the drugs he was allegedly purchasing illegally. Sheena Ann Roberts, 18, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 22, 2003.
Roberts was born Jan. 8, 1985, in Putnam County, to Fred Randall Roberts and Brenda Joan Howard Roberts.
She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a student at Motlow College and had been employed at Video Max, Sparta.
Roberts was preceded in death by her grandmother, Doris Howard.
Survivors include her parents, one brother, Bradley Howard Roberts; cousin, Ted Neil Howard Jr., all of Sparta; grandparents Horace Herbert Howard, of Walling; Gladys Ann Roberts Garrell, of Sparta, great grandmother, Daisy Belle Young, of Sparta; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Danny Keith Dobbs, 49, of McMinnville, passed away Oct. 26, 2003.
Dobbs was born Feb. 25, 1954, in White County, to Raymond Arthell Dobbs and Reba Anderson Dobbs.
He had been a car salesman.
Dobbs was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Pamela Denise Dobbs Layne.

Willie Elizabeth Driver, 83, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 25, 2003.
Driver was born Sept. 3, 1920, in White County, to William Joseph Lamb and Sallie Roberts Lamb.
She had been employed at a shirt factory.
Driver was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Burrell Denny Driver; and brothers and sisters.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Tommie Driver, of Bowling Green, Ky.; sister, Mollie Cope, of Sparta; grandson, Scott Driver and his wife, Sally, of Pinhurst, N.C. and several nieces and nephews.

Norma Gayle ‘Honey’ Jeter, 63, of Michigan, passed away Oct. 19, 2003.
Jeter was born Feb. 6, 1940, in Victoria, Va., to Thomas Algie Jeter and Hallie Rhea Vinson Jeter.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include two sisters, Sandra Clouse and Glinda F. Fragale; two nieces, Jessica Fragale and Elizabeth Kitchen; aunts and uncles, Mary McBride, of Sparta, Mr. and Mrs. James Selby, of Sparta, Margie Jerkins, of Newport News, Va., Doris Slaughter, of Victoria, Va.; and many cousins.
Services were at 1 p.m., Oct. 23, 2003, at Dyer Funeral Home, Cookeville, with burial in Cookeville City Cemetery. Rev. T. J. Bennett officiated.

Nicholas was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Warren County, to Charlie Leighton Hash and Gladys Hash.
She was a retired receptionist and former nurse’s aide.

Ether Holloway Lanier, 85, of Wilksboro, N.C., formerly of White County, passed away Oct. 24, 2003.
Lanier was born Dec. 17, 1917, in White County, to Thomas Brutrand Holloway and Eva Young Holloway.
She was the co-owner of Freedman Music and Loan.
Lanier was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Lanier; sister, Eva Marlow; and two brothers, Joe Holloway and Howard Young.
Survivors include daughter, Janice Hayes, of Florence, Ala., and one brother, Eugene Holloway, of Pleasant Hill.

Waymon H. Tindell, 86, of Hoschton, Ga., passed away Oct. 15, 2003.
Tindell was born in Walling, to Garner and Anne Tindell.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II along with four of his brothers. He had been stationed in the Aleutian Islands.
Tindell was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alvin Bill Tindell, Vernon Tindell; sister-in-law, Edna Tindell; two brothers-in-law, Claude Johnson and Wilson Howard.

Teenager loses life after hitting truck

Local citizens are grieving the loss of a teenager after a Wednesday morning accident on Burgess Falls Road.
The victim, Sheena Ann Roberts, 18, of Sparta, was killed in a collision with a dump truck.
According to an eyewitness, her brother, Bradley Roberts, age 14, a passenger in the Roberts vehicle, was not seriously injured.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Reaker Bass, Roberts was traveling south on Burgess Falls Road [Highway 135] at approximately 7:35 a.m. Her car crossed over the center line into the northbound lane hitting a White County Road Department dump truck loaded with gravel. In the western end of White County lies a piece of property that is surrounded by a magnificent view of the countryside. Not only is the landscape breathtaking, but a piece of local history has been restored for future generations.
Donnie and Helen Hutchings have been enamoured with the historic land that was once owned by Donnie’s grandfather, R.I. Hutchings, founder of Hutchings College. They bought the well-known sawmill at auction in November 2002 and have turned a once run-down building into a dream home. Donnie and Helen both grew up in White County, and keeping in touch with their family roots is important.
