Doyle mayor wants raise or will resign

“I’ll turn my resignation in to you all,” said George Barlow, Doyle mayor, during Tuesday’s meeting of the Doyle Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
“If it ain’t doubled?” questioned Alderman James Yates, referring to the mayor’s expense account.
“That’s right. If it ain’t doubled,” said Barlow.
During the September meeting, the board approved to raise the salary of the city recorder, Mildred Ashworth, from $5.25 per hour to $10 per hour, effective Sept. 15, 2003. A question was then raised about the mayor’s pay not being equal to Ashworth’s. Barlow is paid through an expense account, not by salary, from which he receives $400 per month.… CONTINUED

Roberta Manus Dodson Jernigan, 77, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 5, 2003.
Jernigan was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Spencer, to Revedy Manus and Goldie Prater Manus.
She had been retired from Wagner and was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church.
Jernigan was preceded in death by her parents; and two husbands, James Dodson and Rev. Charles Leighton Jernigan.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Holland, of Cookeville; one granddaughter, Lisa Dillard and husband Danny, of Crossville; three great grandchildren, Katy Bilbrey, Haley Dillard and Colton Dillard, all of Crossville; one brother, Gene Manus, of Spencer; three sisters, Dovie Simmons, Tennie Yates, both of Sparta and Betty Wilson, … CONTINUED

Michael Lynn Seibers, 35, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 6, 2003, at U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville.
Seibers was born July 6, 1968, in White County, to Jonas Seibers and Pauline Smith Seibers Barnes.
He had been a farmer.
Seibers was preceded in death by his father; one son, Adam Seibers; and two brothers, Roy Seibers and Gene Seibers.
Survivors include his mother, Pauline Barnes; ten sisters, Maxine Humphrey, of Ala., Jenny Quarles, of Sparta, Grace Fredon, of Fla.,

Mae Luna Robinson, 88, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 7, 2003.
Robinson was born July 28, 1915, in DeKalb County, to Charlie D. Luna and Lela Jane Steele Luna.
She had been a homemaker.
Robinson was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Savage Robinson; three sons, Gene Robinson, Hebron Robinson and David Robinson; son-in-law,
James Holman; sister, Ann Turner; and three brothers, Ernest Luna, Monroe Luna and Reed Luna.

Board approves deal for Campaign move

Approximately 34 news jobs may soon be available in Sparta with a possible move of a plant from Campaign. Wallace Austin, president of Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce, announced the plans during the Thursday meeting of the Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
Mayor Tommy Pedigo asked Austin tell city alderpersons about the recent meeting of the White County Industrial Board and the proposal for Bill and Gary Shaffield to relocate their business, which produces chairs and stools, to White County. The Shaffield brothers asked the industrial board for payment in lieu of taxes of
$1,000 per year, with the City of Sparta paying $500 … CONTINUED


Mt. Gilead votes to abolish fire committee

In a 24 to 19 vote on Sunday afternoon, Mt. Gilead community members voted to disband the fire department committee and allow the fire chief to run the department.
Approximately one year ago, White County government seized the assets of Mt. Gilead Fire Department after allegations of mismanagement. The department reorganized under leadership of community members who had originally helped establish Mt. Gilead Fire Department approximately 18 years ago. A new fire chief, Jimmy Austin, was also appointed by the committee.
However, after a grant was recently received to purchase a new fire truck for the department, alleged disagreements between some of the committee members … CONTINUED


Miss Liberty Square 2003 crowned this weekend

Miss Liberty Square 2003. The 2003 Liberty Square Celebration began at 9 a.m. Saturday with a host of young men and women, of all ages, as they gathered in Sparta Amphitheater to vie for the various titles depicted under the Liberty Square Pageant rules. After viewing the entries and carefully scoring each participant in the 13-15 year-old age bracket, Brandy Poindexter, 14, was selected Miss Liberty Square 2003. She is the daughter of Dewayne and Frances Poindexter. Other pageant pictures will be featured in Thursday’s edition of The Expositor.

Mildred Louise Hennessee, 60, of Warren Co., passed away Oct. 5, 2003.
Hennessee was born July 12, 1943, in Van Buren County, to Raymon Hennessee and Eno Hennessee.
She was a retired office worker from Oster, and was a member of East End Church of Christ.
Hennessee was preceded in death by her father and two nieces, Chasidy Rhea Hennessee and Aimee Marcella Hennessee.
