S. G. Clark, 74, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 24, 2003.
Clark was born April 19, 1929, in White County, to Wilbur Clark and Ollie Manus Clark.
He was a retired lumber factory worker.
Clark was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Veda Adcock Clark, of Sparta; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Nov. 29, 2003, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bro. Fate Wilson will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Alice Bernice Fields

Alice Bernice Fields, 77, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 22, 2003.
Fields was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Birmingham, Ala., to Alvie C. Weir and Ethel Beatrice Brent Weir.
She had been employed at a shirt factory.
Fields was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Fields; two sons, Jack Fields and Max Kelly Fields.
Survivors include two daughters, Jimmie Gail Doot, Sally Pirtle, both of Sparta; one sister, Betty Chartrand, of California; one brother, Robert Waldron, of Texas; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m., Nov. 25, 2003, at the chapel of Thurman Funeral Home, with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Bro. Jonathan … Read More

Sam Carr, 56, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 23, 2003.
Carr was born July 21, 1947, in White County, to Ed Carr and Betty J. Rice Carr.
He had been the owner of Cy’s Pool Room.
Carr was preceded in death by his father; grandmother, Lovie Presley; grandfather, Andrew Presley; one sister, Judy Young and three brothers, Gene Carr, Bob Carr and Erbie Ray Carr.

Conley appears in court for first-degree murder charges

Betty Elaine Conley, 37, of Sparta, appeared in General Sessions Court Friday to answer to the charge of first-degree murder of longtime White County resident Jim Roy Haley.
Conley was arrested Nov. 18, 2003, after Haley’s body was found at his residence by a family member. Joe Finley, public defender, was appointed as her legal counsel.
The Expositor spoke with Detective Chris Isom on Sunday afternoon about the progress of the investigation. At this time, Isom said he could not release any further statements until he consulted with Special Agent Tommy Calahan, of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, who is assisting with the case.

As of October 24, Angela Baker had been incarcerated more than 50 days.
This time.
When she was taken to jail, Baker was under the influence of methamphetamine and remained in hold (separated from other inmates) for two days before they brought her out.
Over the years, she has spent a great deal of time behind bars.
“I have been locked up over half my life,” said Baker. “I was 15 years old the first time I got in trouble. I ran away from home, and I used drugs.”

Jesse Lynn Merriman, 23, was arrested Nov. 23, 2003, and faces four charges after being involved in an accident with a White County Sheriff Patrol car. He was transported to White County Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to the report, while on patrol at approximately 9:05 p.m., Deputy Charles Sims noticed a vehicle with the driver’s side taillight not working. Sims got behind the vehicle and discovered there was also no tag on the vehicle.

Garey Thomas “Fat Cat” Howell, 58, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 20, 2003.
Howell was born Nov. 9, 1945, in White County, to Walter Howell and Versie Stewart Howell.
He was a retired grocery store owner.
Howell was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joann Price.
