Helen Ruth Thompson Goodwin, 76, of Sparta, passed away De. 17, 2003.
Goodwin was born April 12, 1927, in Rockwood, to George Elwood and Vallie Mae Webb Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Arzie Thompson; and one sister, Lois Cash.

Virgil Lee Baker, 80, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 19, 2003.
Baker was born March 10, 1923, in Sparta, to Landon Baker and Lena King Baker.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Elzora Marie Ogle Baker, of Sparta; one daughter, Shirley Peterson, of Fairgrove, Mich.; two sons, Ronald Baker, of Madison Heights, Mich., James Baker, of Royal Oate, Mich.; one brother, Ralph Baker, of Sparta; one sister, Louise Hensley, of Sparta; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Dec. 22, 2003, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Baker-Tollison Cemetery. Charles Ogle will officiate. Hunter Funeral Home

Tennesseans to see changes in sales tax

Tennessee lost over $300 million in sales last year to Internet purchases, but through the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA) residents’ purchases on-line will soon be monitored after years of unregulated transactions.
During the recent membership luncheon of the Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce, Debbie Lawrence, tax audit supervisor with the Tennessee Department of Revenue, told those in attendance the entire concept of Internet buying would change for consumers in Tennessee. According to Lawrence, Tennessee has been working with the State Governors’ Conference since 2002 to streamline sales and use tax laws.

Anna Christine Horn Gaffin, 92, of Fountain City, passed away Dec. 20, 2003.
Gaffin was born Sept. 9, 1911, to Sam Horn and Elizabeth Horn.
She was retired from the Knox County School System with 41 years of service. Her previous experience was in Crossville, Humboldt, Milan, Sparta and the Knox County library.
Gaffin was preceded in death by two brothers, Terry Horn and Jim Horn.

McFarlin was born June 19, 1923, in Williamson County, to Dudley Graham and Mary Batman Graham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn McFarlin; four brothers, Dudley Graham Jr., James Graham, Douglas Graham, Paul Graham; four sisters, Shirley Warren, Emma Secreto, Vera Taylor and Daisy Norvell.

Geneva M. Thomason, 66, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 18, 2003.
Thomason was born July 7, 1937, to Ernest T. Mills Jr. and Elma Lee Miller Mills.
She had been a homemaker.
Thomason was preceded in death by her parents and; one brother, Byron Mills.

Rill was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Michigan, to Louis Victor Pannecouk and Flossie Fralin Pannecouk.

Julia Carol Laws, 66, of Erwin, formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 18, 2003.
Laws was born in White County to Carl Randolph and Susie Cantrell Boles.
She had been a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Shelton, of Baker, Fla., Angela Rutherfordton and husband, Bud, of North Carolina; two sons, Gus Keys, of Erwin and Danny Keys, of Jonesboro; two brothers, Bobby Randolph, of Melbourne, Fla., Carl Randolph, of Jonesborough, 13 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
