Ernest Morris Selby, 70, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 11, 2003.
Selby was born Jan. 30, 1933 in White County to Alpha Desol Selby and Vera Lou Hunt Selby.
He had been employed with State Auto Insurance.
Selby was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond ‘Johnny’ Selby, Jimmy Selby and Bobby Selby.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Norris Selby; one son, Lonnie D. Cecil E. Smith, 89, and Christine Newsome Smith, 85, of Sparta, husband and wife of more than 65 years, both departed this world within two days of each other to be with their Lord.
Cecil, who passed away Dec. 9, 2003, was a retired officer of Underwriters Laboratory and an electrical engineer. He was one of the longest serving members of the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union and recently was one of three Tennessee IBEW members to receive a 60-year pin for continuous membership.
He had served on the White County Election Commission and had more than a quarter century of service as an elder or deacon … CONTINUED

James Cordell Lowery, 74, of Michigan, formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 10, 2003.
Lowery was born March 26, 1929, in Sparta, to William Logan Lowery and Louella Measles Lowery.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carl Lowery, Carson Lowery, Dan Lowery; and one sister, Edna Wallace.
Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn D. Randie Burtis ‘Burt’ Hall, 55, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 12, 2003.
Hall was born June. 14, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio, to William Hall and Callie Durham Hall.
He had been employed at Auto Zone.
Hall was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include three daughters, Tracey Butt and husband, Bruce, Tebel Hall, Twyla Hall and husband, Dana; one son, Randie Hall Jr,; two step daughters, Tami and Teri, all of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Lois Hall, of Cookeville, Teresa Hunter and husband, Wayne, of Sparta; one brother, Jay Hall and wife, Peggy, of Lexington, Ky.; special friend, Nancy; several grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.


John C. Steakley Jr.

John C. Steakley Jr, 89, of Cookeville, passed away Dec. 13, 2003.
Steakley was born Feb. 20, 1914, in Bledsoe County to John C. Steakley and Mary Lou Sapp Steakley.
He had been a machinist at Sparta Shirt Factory.
Steakley was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Charles Dean Steakley and one great granddaughter, Baby Dickinson.
Survivors include his wife, Cornelia Dodson Steakley, of Cookeville; one daughter, Anita Dickinson, of Cookeville; one son, Graham Steakley, of Donelson; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Maxie Smith, 70, of Dahlonega, Ga., passed away Dec. 6, 2003.
Smith was born to Roscoe Reeves and Alma Brown Reeves.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Joe Labermeyer, of Ft. Irene Whiteaker Howard, 89, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 7, 2003.
Howard was born Oct. 16, 1914, in white County to Will Whiteaker and Linda Mae Farley Whiteaker.
She had been a housewife.
Howard was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Howard and two sisters.
Survivors include step children, Ben Howard, Ray Howard and wife Ronnie, all of Dayton, Ohio, Charles Howard, of Chattanooga, Mable Garrett and her husband, Lloyd, of Cookeville, Ann Faye Doris, of Goodletsville; two brothers, Bill Whiteaker, of Sparta, and Howard Whiteaker, of McMinnville.

Rita Faye Allen, 49, of Cookeville, passed away Dec. 8, 2003, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Allen was born May 21, 1954, in McEwen, to Gordon M. and Ruby May Keith Helton.
She was a Christian and a homemaker.
Allen was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Larry Helton.
