Crash sends one to Erlanger

Police arrived on the scene just minutes after two vehicles collided on Highway 70, Monday afternoon.
According to Sgt. Dale Dodson, with the Sparta Police Department, they received a call at 3:48 p.m. that an accident had occured on Bockman Way.
The accident resulted in 86-year-old Olgie Metcalf, of Sparta, being transported by Life Force to Erlanger Medical Center.
She was driving a 1992 Mercury, and the oncoming vehicle, a 1990 Dodge Ram truck, was driven by Robert Beckwith, of Sparta.
According to Dodson, it is speculated Metcalf was driving west on Highway 70 and Beckwith was driving east when Metcalf pulled over to check her … Read More

Myrna Lowery Carter began decorating her house at Christmas just like any other ordinary mother would do for her children. She would put up a tree and purchase decorations at bargain prices.

Cecil E. Smith

Cecil E. Smith, 89, of Sparta, and chairman of the White County Election Commission, passed away Dec. 9, 2003, only two days after the death of his wife of 65 years, Christine Newsome Smith.
Smith was a retired officer of Underwriters Laboratory and an electrical engineer. He was one of the longest serving members of the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union and recently was one of three Tennessee IBEW members to receive a 60-year pin for continuous membership.
He had served on the White County Election Commission and had more than a quarter century of service as an elder or deacon of the Church of Christ, in … Read More


Two barns involved in early morning fires

Two suspicious fires occurred in the early morning hours of Monday. In both cases, barns, situated less than three miles apart got firefighters out of bed and busy working to save what they could from devastation.
Mildred Lowery, owner of the barn located on Old Kentucky Road, said, “I was up at 1:30 a.m., and I have a habit of looking out the window in that direction, and there was nothing going on. Just an hour later, we were woke up by people at the door, and when I looked out, the whole barn, all the way around, was a complete ball of fire.”

Dimple I. Howard Martin, 92, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 10, 2003, at Master’s Healthcare Center, in Algood.
Martin was born Feb. 22, 1911, in White County, to Evan Howard and Margaret Saylors Howard.
She had been a homemaker.
Martin was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include one daughter, Bobbie Langley, of Cookeville; one son, James Martin, of Sparta; six grandchildren; nine grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Howard, of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 3 p.m., Dec. 12, 2003, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Old Zion Cemetery. David Lee England will officiate.

Thomas Morgan Johnson, 51, of Spencer, passed away Dec. 9, 2003, at Vanderbilt University Hospital.
Johnson was born March 18, 1952, in White County, to Melvin Lee “Buddy” and Mabel Irene Rutherford Johnson.
He was a retired golf course supervisor.
Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sally Annell Johnson Lance; and one brother, Kenneth Lee Johnson.

Everette Allen, 87, of Baxter, passed away Dec. 9, 2003.
Allen was born Jan. 28, 1916, in Jackson County to Charlie Allen and Ida Sally Rawley Allen.
He had been a member of Black Oak Church of God.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Brenda Burgess; five brothers and one sister.
