A well-rounded education includes all aspects of life, and students at White County Middle School will learn about community service as they raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
For many outside the walls of WCMS, the annual Math-A-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research has been a well-kept secret. Teachers and students have been actively participating in the fundraising event for the past 10 years, but the general public has not been aware of the success of the program.

Pat’s Book and Card finds new location

Pat Wallace is enjoying a new home for her store, Pat’s Book and Card. The store, which had been in the Wal-Mart Shopping Center for more than 19 years, has moved to the location previously occupied by Big J Jewelry, near Payless Pharmacy.
“I’m happy to have the extra space, and I like being on the main street in town,” Wallace said.
The store, owned by Wallace and her husband, Jimmy, officially opened at its new location on Jan. 19, 2004.
Pat opened the store after she had learned “the trade” from her adopted aunt, Mary Kay Barthel, who owned the old Hallmark store.

Willie Jay Bryant Scott, 92, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 24, 2004.
Scott was born Nov. 18, 1911, in White County, to Aarron Ras Scott and Attie Len Tennessee Stone Scott.
He was a retired teacher, truant officer and former White County School Bus Supervisor.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth Elsie Bumbalough Scott; three brothers, John Scott, Taylor Scott, Dean Scott; and two sisters, Pauline Scott and Fannie Dibrell.

James Troy Fields, 46, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 22, 2004.
Fields was born April 9, 1957, in Summerset, Ohio, to James Troy Brock and Ida Dollarhide Fields.
He had been a factory worker.
Fields was preceded in death by his parents.

Hicks was born Nov. 11, 1936, in White County, to Dewey Conley and Winnie Conley.
She had been a homemaker.
Hicks was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jimmie Lee Hicks; one brother, Richard Jones; and one sister, Mary Bell Bumbalough.
