It seems only natural that February is National Weddings Month. After all, Valentine’s Day is the most popular day of the year for wedding proposals. The second-most popular day to “pop the question” is New Year’s Eve.

The excitement is mounting and White Countians are preparing to attend the 8th Annual Expositor Awards Ceremony at 2 p.m., Feb. 29, 2004, at White County Middle School.
A special ceremony will include Citizen of the Year, Unsung Heroes, Golden Apple Teacher and Photography Awards. However, everyone is anxiously waiting for the answer to the question, “Who will be named the next Citizen of the Year?”
Beginning in the fall of 2003, ballots were printed in The Expositor for nominations for Citizen of the Year and Unsung Heroes.

Kay named VFIS Instructor of the Year

Emergency services personnel must learn proper driving techniques to ensure the safety of the public, and Ed Kay, Sparta fire chief, is the person who can help departments develop these skills.
Kay has been an instructor for Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Service for approximately five years and has been named the Instructor for the Year 2003. VFIS is the nation’s leading provider of insurance and training services for emergency service organizations.
A statement issued to VFIS clients, by David F. Wyras, president, said according to U.S. Fire Administration statistics, nearly 20 percent to 25 percent of accidental deaths in the fire service are related to vehicles. … Read More

Stacy Turner, 29, of Sparta, was transported to White County Community Hospital and was released the same day after being x-rayed and treated. His mother, Betty Turner happily told The Expositor, “They did an x-ray on his back, but he is fine.”
Jason Henry was the first one on the scene and said, “He was getting out of the vehicle when I got here.”

William Thomas ‘Bill’ Passons, 79, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 22, 2004.
Passons was born April 15, 1924, in Warren County, to Thomas Arless Passons and Zettie Hudgens Passons.
He had been a disc jockey at WSMT Radio for more than 20 years.
Passons was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Carol Maxine McCarley Passons.
Survivors include one sister, Cleo Passons Walker and husband, Jimmy, of Sparta; one niece, Kathy Dunn and husband, Mickey, of Lawrenceburg; one nephew, Stephen Walker, of Gallatin; great nieces and nephews, Drew Dugger, of Chattanooga, Dustin Dugger, Mandy Dunn, both of Lawrenceburg, Christopher Walker, of Gallatin; and two great great nieces.… Read More

Wilfred Gene Hutson, 69, of Manchester, formerly of Sparta, passed away Feb. 24, 2004.
Hutson was born in White County to Dillard and Lula Hutchings Hutson.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Hutson was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Dianna Brymer Hutson, of Manchester; one daughter, Gwen Davis, of Shelbyville; one son, Michael Hutson, of Shelbyville; two grandchildren and a stepson, John Upchurch, of Shelbyville.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Feb. 26, 2004, at Hillcrest Funeral Home with burial in Willow Mount Cemetery. Rev. Jimmy Tedder will officiate.
Hillcrest Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Accident sends two to hospital; one airlifted

Cassville Volunteer Fire Department, the Emergency Management Agency team, White County Sheriff Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, several first responders and White County Ambulance Service responded in a hurry when the call came in ‘accident with injuries at the intersection of Highway 70 and Old Kentucky Road, also known as OT Jones crossroads.
The 1999 Mercury Sable was driven by Alton Marcum. Marcum’s wife Pearl was a passenger in the vehicle traveling northbound on Old Kentucky Road.
A 1991 Toyota Corolla, driven by Jeremy Smartt carried two passengers, Brandy Dodson and a 15-year-old male. The juvenile appeared to have only minor injuries but both Dodson and Smartt … Read More

The Expositor will be honoring the 2004 Golden Apple Teacher during a special ceremony at 2 p.m., Feb. 29, 2004, at White County Middle School, which will also include the Citizen of the Year, Unsung Heroes and Photography Contest.
The ultimate reward for any teacher is to be recognized for the success of his or her students. The Expositor will salute the nominees for Golden Apple Teacher onstage during the ceremony. Three-wheeler accident injures one

Friday morning brought a sense of uncertainty for one White County family when
David Clouse, who had left on a three-wheeler Thursday night, had not returned home.
According to a report by Sheriff James O’Conner, at approximately 7 a.m., Feb. 20, 2004, a rescue-search team was dispatched
to the Big Bottom area of White County to look for Clouse.
Hickory Valley Volunteer Fire Department, along with White County Ambulance Service and TWRA Officer Jon Ryan, responded.
