Accident sends two to hospital; one airlifted

Cassville Volunteer Fire Department, the Emergency Management Agency team, White County Sheriff Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, several first responders and White County Ambulance Service responded in a hurry when the call came in ‘accident with injuries at the intersection of Highway 70 and Old Kentucky Road, also known as OT Jones crossroads.
The 1999 Mercury Sable was driven by Alton Marcum. Marcum’s wife Pearl was a passenger in the vehicle traveling northbound on Old Kentucky Road.
A 1991 Toyota Corolla, driven by Jeremy Smartt carried two passengers, Brandy Dodson and a 15-year-old male. The juvenile appeared to have only minor injuries but both Dodson and Smartt … CONTINUED

Charles W. Bolton, 70, of Memphis, passed away Feb. 16, 2004.
Bolton was born May 7, 1933, in Zion’s Rest, Miss.
He had been employed in the investment and insurance industry.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dr. Chuck Olds, of Cookeville; one grandson, Bart Williamson and wife Sarah, of Algood; two great grandsons, Zachary Williamson, Jacob Williamson; and best friend and constant companion, Carolyn Trussell, of Memphis.
Services were at 11 a.m., Feb. 19, 2004, at Old Zion Rest Church of Christ with burial in Old Zion Rest Cemetery.

Ollie Belle Wilhite

Ollie Belle Wilhite, 91, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 22, 2004.
Wilhite was born Jan. 16, 1913, in White County to Thomas Jacob Tallent and Amanda Margaret Clouse Tallent.
She had been a homemaker.
Wilhite was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, W.L. ‘Bill’ Wilhite; one sister; and three brothers.
Survivors include one daughter, Alberta Gardner, of Sparta; three sons, James B. Wilhite, of Sparta, Bobby D. Wilhite, of Doyle, Joe H. Wilhite, of Sparta; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

June Louise Moore Cookson, 79, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 20, 2004.
Cookson was born April 10, 1924, in Framingham, Mass., to Edward Moore and Edna Moore.
She had been a homemaker.
Cookson was preceded in death by her parents; and one daughter, Shelia Setty.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Graham, of Sparta, Betty Babine, of Massachusetts; one sister, Lollie Roden, of Massachusetts; three brothers, Bill Moore, of Pennsylvania, Roger Moore, of Massachusetts, Marky Moore, of Arkansas; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Services were at 2 p.m., Feb. 22, 2004, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Danny Lane will officiate.

Paul Dwaine Rigsby, 32, of Spencer, passed away Feb. 20, 2004.
Rigsby was born Oct. 14, 1971, in Warren County, to Roscoe Rigsby and Betty Rogers Rigsby.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Danneail Lewis Rigsby, of Spencer; one daughter, Amelia Jean Rigsby, of Spencer; father, Roscoe Rigsby and his wife, Marie, of Smithville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Diana and Ernest Burdett, of Spencer, Deborah and Tim Wanamaker, of McMinnville; one brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Peggy Rigsby, of Spencer; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Willard Matthews, 72, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 20, 2004.
Matthews was born June 13, 1931, in White County to William Malichi Matthews and Martha Jane Manis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Delma Matthews, of Sparta; children, Michael Matthews, Darlene Thomas, both of Sparta, Carolyn Laney, of Cedar Hill, Donnell Matthews, of Sparta; two sisters, Jewell Tindle and husband Roy, of Doyle, Wilma Clouse, of Quebeck; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Willie Joe Jenkins, 69, passed away Feb. 21, 2004.
Jenkins was born to Willie and Roy Buck Jenkins.
He was retired from the state of Tennessee.
Jenkins was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Donald Jenkins.
Survivors include one sister, Barbara Manasco and husband, Andy, of Hendersonville; nephews, Mike Manasco and wife, Wanda, of Richmond, Ky,; Mark Manasco, of Nashville; great niece and great nephews, Heather Ausbrooks and her husband, Jason, of Scottsville, Ky., James Manasco, of Richmond, Ky., John Manasco and wife, Dawn, of Louisville, Ky.; and great-great nephews, Zachary, Ashton, Jordan and Desmen.

Gasoline drive-offs rampant in White County

Paying for gasoline is just part of the expense of owning a vehicle. Not paying can be the first step to losing a driver license or even spending time in jail.
Recently, two boys in a four-door gray Grand Am pumped $18 worth of gasoline into the vehicle at a White County gas station and left without paying.
If convicted of this theft, according to Tennessee Code Annotated, ‘in addition to the fine and imprisonment authorized by law for the offense of theft, the court may order the suspension of the driver license of a person’.

Dispatcher’s dismissal stands

A White County E-911 dispatcher has appealed her dismissal to the grievance committee of the board of directors, but during a Feb. 17, 2004, meeting, the three-member group voted unanimously for their original decision to fire Jamie Banks to stand.
Banks was fired during a Jan. 12, 2004, meeting of the E-911 board of directors after she was involved in an investigation by the White County Narcotics Unit. Harry Cole, E-911 director, suspended Banks after seeking legal advice and had requested the district attorney to investigate the matter further.
