Glen Lee Shomake, 66, of Cookeville, passed away March 1, 2004.
Shoemake was born April 10, 1937, in Smith County, to Frank Shoemake and Bessie Bush Shoemake.
Shoemake was a retired exterminator for Hub City Exterminators.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Shoemake; and stepmother, Ethel Shoemake.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary Coffee Shoemake; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Russell Cox, all of Cookeville; two sisters, Ruth Norris, of Livingston, Ethel Blair and husband Ernest, of Elmwood; grandchildren and spouses: Amanda and Tim Dyer, Jennifer and Scott Griner, Andrew and Suzanne Cox; great grandchildren Aaron, Reuben and Samuel Dyer.… CONTINUED

Mary Delma Matthews, 76, of Sparta, passed away March 1, 2004.
Matthews was born March 24, 1927, in White County, to James Andrew Howell and Mary Magdalene Howard.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard Matthews; one brother, J.D. Howell; and one sister.
Survivors include her children: Mike and Vickie Matthews, Darlene and Dennis Thomas, Donnell and Lisa Matthews, all of Sparta, Carolyn and Randall Laney of Cedar Hill; one sister, Dorothy and husband Barney Johnson of Losantville, Ind.; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Nicole Renee Roberson, 16, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 29, 2004.
Roberson was born May 31, 1987, in Fort Pierce, Fla., to Mike Roberson and Kim Meadows Roberson.
She was a junior at White County High School.
Survivors include her parents, Mike and Kim Roberson; one sister, Meghan Roberson; two brothers, Chris Roberson, Trent Roberson; grandparents, W.T. and Renee Meadows, all of Sparta; Peggy Shell, of Stuart, Fla.; Eugene Roberson, of Ft. Pierce, Fla; great grandfather, Eugene Honaker, of Dunkirk, Md.
Services were at 1 p.m., March 3, 2004, at East Sparta Church of God with burial in Lower Cherry Creek Cemetery. Bishop Robert Hoyt officiated.

Treasure Hunt kicks off March 4

The first day of March brings the hope of spring fun and games, and it is also the time for the annual Expositor Treasure Hunt.
Beginning March 4, 2004, clues will be posted in The Expositor that will lead the treasure hunters to their bounty. The prize will be $100 for finding the famous Expositor brick, which was also used in last year’s treasure hunt.
The brick will be hidden on public property in White County. The hiding places will be reachable with a truck or car.
Ten clues will be written for the hiding place and will be distributed throughout The Expositor inside the … CONTINUED


Mitchell named Citizen of the Year

The eighth annual Citizen of the Year, Golden Apple, and Unsung Hero Awards Ceremony took place, February 29, 2004, at White County Middle School.
The crowd cheered and stood to their feet as Dr. Charles Mitchell was announced the 2004 Citizen of the Year. A large part of the crowd was Mitchell’s family, who had hidden until his award was announced, and cheered loud enough for Mitchell to realize they were all there to honor him.

Tragedy strikes as 16-year-old dies in crash

White County has lost another vibrant teenager after a one-car accident on Highway 84 Sunday afternoon.
Nicole Roberson would have celebrated her 17th birthday in just a few months. Instead, on a sunny Sunday afternoon, she lost her life following an automobile crash.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, Roberson was traveling northbound on Highway 84 at approximately 1:25 p.m., on Feb. 29, 2004, when she lost control of her vehicle, apparently overcorrected and began to slide sideways down the roadway. Berdie Mac Lull McCormick Martino Seibers, 83, of Doyle, passed away Feb. 28, 2004.
Seibers was born July 5, 1920, in Doyle, to George Henry Lull and Margie Mae Ballard Lull.
She had been a homemaker.
Seibers was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Richard Edward McCormick, Bill Martino, Roy Seibers; two sons, Lynn Douglas McCormick, George Eston McCormick; and three brothers, Henry Lull, Fred Lull and Herbert Lull.

West was born May 21, 1969, to Shirley Smith and James Lary West.

Edna Pauline Vinson Daniels, 81, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 26, 2004.
Daniels was born April 9, 1922, in White County to Guster Vinson and Maude Rice Vinson.
She had been a homemaker.
Daniels was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Oakley Daniels.

Eddie Dean Hodge, 48, of Spencer passed away Feb. 24, 2004.
Hodge was born Nov. 29, 1955, in Pikeville to James Hodge and Antha Burgess Hodge Drake.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include two sons, John David Hodge, Dewayne Hodge; mother, Antha Hodge Drake; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Margaret Hodge, all of Spencer; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Danny Boles, of Sparta; two foster sisters, Reba childress, of Dunlap, Rachel Owensby, of Signal Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
