Katherine M. Hyder, 73, of Sparta, passed away April 27, 2004, at White County Community Hospital.
Hyder was born June 11, 1930, in Quebeck, to John Davis and Arrie Kirby Davis.
She had been employed in the dry cleaning business.
Hyder was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John D. Hyder; three sisters; and six brothers.

Donna R. Blaylock, 41, of Smithville, passed away April 27, 2004.
Blaylock attended Covenant Baptist Church and had been a factory worker.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Williams Johnson and father-in-law, L.J. Johnson.
Survivors include one son, Eric Blaylock, of Sparta; brothers, Larry Dean Johnson, Dell Lewis, Danny Lewis and Steve Lewis, all of Sparta; special friends, Howard and Rose Griffin, of Smithville, Ron and Reedie Brock, of Sparta and Rhonda Bray; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be at 11 a.m., April 29, 2004, at Covenant Baptist Church with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Thomason will officiate.

Kenneth Lee Ward, 51, of Sparta, passed away April 27, 2004, at Livingston Regional Medical Center.
Ward was born Feb. 10, 1953, in Van Buren County, to Wilmer and Gladys Marie Young Ward.
He had been employed with W. and O. Construction Company.
Ward was preceded in death by his parents.

Curtiss speaks out about meth task force

After rural Tennessee legislators questioned the qualifications of a meth subcommittee, Governor Phil Bredesen disbanded the group and has formed a new meth task force, which includes State Representative Charles Curtiss.
During the past several weeks, numerous members of the Tennessee House and Senate expressed their concerns about the makeup of a committee that was formed to review the overwhelming methamphetamine problem in Tennessee. Curtiss, who represents the White and Cumberland counties and a portion of Warren County, was one of the first individuals appointed to the new task force.

The 10th Annual Coal Miner’s Reunion will be held at BonDeCroft Elementary School from 1 – 5 p.m. on May 2, 2004. The event, celebrating the history of Bon Air Mountain and the coal mines that were active there from 1882–1936, brings together the people of White County, as well as those who live elsewhere, but were somehow part of that rich history.
“We have people from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, from all over, come every year,” said Sherry Pack, a teacher at BonDeCroft school, and one of the organizers of the event.

Findlay Elementary’s 3rd Annual Spring Fling will be April 30, 2004, from 3 – 7 p.m. on the school grounds. The community is invited to attend.
“It’s the fundraiser we do every year,” said Janet Webb, president of Findlay Fans, the PTO organization for the school. “This year the proceeds will go toward improving technology in the classrooms. Some classes are in need of computers, TV’s, and VCR’s. The teachers have provided a list of needed items.”
This year’s event will feature entertainment by local performer, Tasha Dunn, the Findlay cheerleaders, the Findlay Chorus, and a drama group from First Baptist Church.

Gregory Douglas Hale, 40, of Spencer, passed away April 24, 2004.
Hale was born Aug. 6, 1963, in Warren County to James H. Hale and Leona Curtis Hale.
He had been a carpenter.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Justin and Sherra M. Hale; mother, Leona Hale; father, James M. Hale; one brother, James L. Hale; one sister, Juwana McCoy; nieces and nephews, Jarred McCoy, Angel Madewell, Jason Madewell and Wyatt Hale, all of Spencer.
Private graveside services will be held. Billy Reed will officiate.

Rachel K. Johnson, 89, of Sparta, passed away April 21, 2004.
Johnson was born March 31, 1915, in Giles County, to Frank Kincaid and Loudie Clark Kincaid.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers.
Survivors include four sons, James Johnson, of Texas, George David Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Joe Johnson, all of Sparta; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m., April 23, 2004, at Thurman Funeral Home with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Wilhite officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangments.
