Joe Passons Wallace, 80, of Sparta, passed away April 24, 2004.
Wallace was born June 9, 1923, in White County to Malichi Cummings Wallace and Emma Passons Wallace.
He had been a banker with Commerce Union Bank.
Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Evelyn Carrick Wallace.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Blanchard Tubb, of Sparta; two brothers, Carl Cummings Wallace and his wife, Leta, of Sparta, John Harold Wallace and his wife, Jean, of Nashville; two grandchildren, Shannon Cantrell and her husband, Scott, of Livingston, Holly Cravens and her husband, Greg, of Sparta; and five great grandchildren, Dakota Cantrell, Dusty … Read More

Rachel K. Johnson, 89, of Sparta, passed away April 21, 2004.
Johnson was born March 31, 1915, in Giles County, to Frank Kincaid and Loudie Clark Kincaid.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers.
Survivors include four sons, James Johnson, of Texas, George David Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Joe Johnson, all of Sparta; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m., April 23, 2004, at Thurman Funeral Home with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Wilhite officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangments.


Crash sends

A beautiful spring morning was the setting for a crash that occurred on Saturday.
According to Sgt. R.C. Christian, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, at approximately 9:30 a.m., April 17, 2004, Charles B. Brimer, 57, of Sparta, was traveling southbound on Highway 111, in a 1983 Chevrolet Caprice.
Gary Wayne Dodson, 55, of Sparta, was westbound on Old Union Road and had crossed the northbound lanes of Highway 111, to go west on East Gooseneck Road, when the two vehicles collided.
Brimer was airlifted by Life Force helicopter to Erlanger Hospital, in Chattanooga, with possible internal injuries. Dodson was transported by Van Buren … Read More

Although Discount Tobacco and Beer Mart has complied with the $3,500 in inventory, the Sparta Beer Board has delayed action on granting the business a permit to sell beer.
The Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen adjourned their meeting on April 15, 2004, and reconvened as the Sparta Beer Board to address the issue about the beer permit. Patrolman J.T. King made a traffic stop at approximately 12:03 a.m., April 11, 2004 on Highway 111.
The subject’s vehicle was observed speeding. After stopping the vehicle and coming into contact with the driver, King noticed the driver, Christopher Willard Frazier, 26, of Sparta, appeared nervous, as did the passenger, Lisa Dawn Bristow, 29, of Sparta.
White County Sheriff Deputy Jeff Bulakowski with his K-9, Cyrus, arrived on the scene and after the K-9 indicated on the vehicle, the car was searched.

Hundreds of women attended the 4th Annual Upper Cumberland Showcase for Women on April 17, 2004, at the Ag Complex building on the White County Fairgrounds. There was so much to see and do, but that did not slow down the ladies who came for a good time. They thrived on the excitement of the day, planned especially for them.
There was never a dull moment, as there was something happening on stage for most of the day, and vendors had plenty to offer women of all ages. Several women won prizes and/or cash during the Match Game, Plinko, and a newspaper costume fashion show. Others … Read More

Dale C. Speer, 91, of Fern Creek, Ky., passed away April 17, 2004.
Speer was a retired teacher.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert M. Speer.
Survivors include her children, Betty Morrow and her husband Glenn, George Ann Holeman and her husband Ozzie, of Sparta, Bill Speer and his wife Rebecca, of Frankfort. Ky.; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m., April 21, 2004, at Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home in Shepherdsville, Ky., with burial in Brookland Cemetery.

Daisy Ilene Rogers Grissom, 100, of Sparta, passed away April 16, 2004.
Grissom was born April 2, 1904, in Warren County, to Charlie Rogers and Kate Goff Rogers.
She had been a homemaker.
Grissom was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include one grandson, Kenneth (Kokomo) McCormick and his wife, Geraldine, of Sparta; two step grandsons, Ricky Ballew, Nicky Ballew, both of Sparta; one brother, C.O. Rogers, of Sparta and many friends.
Services were at 2 p.m., April 18, 2004, at Hunter Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Preston Heights Cemetery, in Quebeck. Doug Goff and Bobby Wilhite officiated.

Sparkman was born Nov. 10, 1908, in White County to Will Sparkman and Permila Mitchell Sparkman.
He was a farmer.

Sims was born March 21, 1948, in White County, to Herbert Lee Sims and Edna Pearl Geer Sims.
He had been employed in Gonzalez, Mexico, as an engineer with clothing manufacturing.
Sims was preceded in death by his parents.

Marguerite Anderson Kirby, 87, of Sparta, passed away April 13, 2004.
Kirby was born April 6, 1917, in White County, to Estle Anderson and Eva Maude Cope Anderson.
She had been a homemaker.
Kirby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Kirby, one son, Harry Anderson and one grandson, Gregory Scott Anderson.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Christie Chantal Anderson and several cousins.
Services were at 11 a.m., April 17, 2004, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Old Zion Cemetery. Bro. Fate Wilson officiated.

Joseph John Carlson

Joseph John Carlson, 66, of Sparta, passed away April 14, 2004.
Carlson was born Dec. 28, 1937, in Fort Bragg, Calif., to Joseph Bertil Carlson and Adeline Mae Arnhold Carlson.
He had been a logging company driver.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Carlson, of Sparta; four children, Leslie Carlson, Kathleen Eldridge, Joseph C. Carlson, James Carlson; several aunts, uncles and cousins, in Minnesota; cousin, in California; and one grandson, Austin Carlson.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
