FBI arrests former deputy

After an undercover investigation by federal and state authorities that lasted almost three years, four law enforcement officials, which includes one former White County deputy, as well as four civilians, were arrested for charges ranging from distributing cocaine to money laundering.
Steven Bert Williamson, who had worked as both a correction officer and deputy under the administration of former White County Sheriff Guy Goff, was arrested in Operation Tarnished Shield and charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Williamson had been employed by Algood Police Department and was currently working with Tennessee Technological University Police Department.

George W. Andrews, M.D., 62, passed away Aug. 14, 2005.
Andrews was born Sept. 8, 1942, in Memphis, to Harold and Jewel Andrews.
He served from 1967-1971 at Baptist Hospital, Nashville, in Medical, Obstetrics, and Gynecology where he was chief resident from 1970-1971.
He then practiced privately as an OB-GYN in the Nashville area.
Andrews was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bill Andrews.

Lendel Gibson

Lendel Gibson, 79, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 10, 2005.
Gibson was born July 6, 1926, in Sturgis, Ky., to Rev. A. A. Gibson and Edith Brown Gibson.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.
Gibson was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ricky Gibson; brother, Losite Gibson; one sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and J.D. Morse.

Draven Kaine Smith

Draven Kaine Smith, 5 1/2-month-old son of Keleon Curtis and Jessica Richelle Birk Smith, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 13, 2005.
Smith was born Feb. 22, 2005, in Chattanooga.
Survivors include his parents; six grandparents, Patty E. Smith, Donald F. Smith, both of Oklahoma, Katherine Tayes, of Sparta, Wayne Tayes, of Cookeville, Dave Birk, and Teresa Birk, both of Virginia.
Services were 6 p.m., Aug. 16, 2005, at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel.
Bro. Jerry Pullum officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


M&M debate continues

The vote about who will be given the county’s recycling materials will once again be presented to the county commission during tonight’s meeting at 7 p.m., Aug. 15, at White County Courthouse.
During the Wednesday night meeting of White County Solid Waste Committee, members voted to send the matter back to the full commission. The decision will be in the hands of White County commissioners about which business, M&M Recycling or ASE Metals, will be given the cardboard, plastic and cans collected in the specially marked bins at the county’s convenience centers.

Edna Pearl Young Lawson Dulaney, 80, of Doyle, passed away Aug. 12, 2005.
Dulaney was born May 30, 1925, in White County, to Henry Young and Mary Parish Young.
She had been a factory worker.
Dulaney was preceded in death by her parents; and first husband, Marvin Roosevelt Lawson.

Mary Vennie Elrod Bussell, 92, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 7, 2005.
Bussell was born Aug. 29, 1912, in White County, to Alonzo and Susie Abston Elrod.
She had worked at a shirt factory.
Bussell was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bethel Bussell; two brothers, Varris Elrod, and Jack Dempsey Elrod.

Jackie Howard Young, 44, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 3, 2005.
Young was born Sept. 8, 1960, in White County, to William Howard Young and Thelma Lee Pope.
He had worked at Federal Mogul, in Smithville.

Preparing for a ‘First’ in banking

The temporary building has been set and construction on a permanent facility will soon begin for a new bank that earned a name of excellence in the Upper Cumberland.
First National Bank of Tennessee will join the fast-growing section of businesses on Highway 111, near Wal-Mart, as employees prepare to open the doors at their new location.
Robert Verble, long-time banker in White County, is at the helm of the operation and will be serving as community president.
