City budget is back on track

A standing-room-only crowd filled the meeting room of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen as city employees filled the room to hear elected officials discuss the final terms of the new budget.
The City of Sparta budget failed to pass during the Sept. 15, 2005, meeting of the board. Portions of the budget had been questioned, which included longevity pay, Christmas bonus and health insurance. Alderman Ben Holland said the board should have reviewed the budget more extensively before making a final decision.

Hi,
I hope everyone is doing okay.
We’re all doing just fine, counting the days down until we start heading home.
It’s been a pretty busy month training the Iraqi Army. SFC Binkley, MSG Randolph and I just finished up running a Convoy Live Fire Exercise for the Iraqi Army. The training lasted about a month and was very productive.
We would kick off real early in hopes of finishing up before it got too hot.

Sparta Police Department has filed charges against a Sparta woman, who according to Police Chief Jeff Guth, was a patient at White County Community Hospital at the time the fire was discovered.
In a story in the Sept. 19, 2005, edition of The Expositor, it was reported that at approximately 3 a.m., Sept. 19, 2005, E-911 dispatched Sparta Fire Department to the White County Community Hospital with a fire alarm call.
Firefighters quickly had the blaze under control and the investigation began. Later that day, Sgt. Jeff Hutson charged the woman who was identified as Annette Sue Parrish, 39, of Sparta. Special agents … Read More

Reba B. Cloud, 92, of Walling passed away Sept. 27, 2005.
Cloud was born Aug. 2, 1913, in White County, to William Isaac and Viola Pollard Bain.
She was a dedicated homemaker.
Cloud was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ocie Cloud; one sister, Edna Mosler; four brothers, Lester, Edgar Mansfield, Carl and Leslie Bain; one step-child, Earl Cloud Sr.
Survivors include one sister, Louise Johnson, of Walling; three step grandchildren, Earl Cloud Jr., Joe Cloud, Susan Cloud, all of Huntsville; several step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Goodwin was born June 7, 1940, in White County, to Charlie and Della Howell Goodwin.
He was owner of Ragland Bottom Restaurant and Bait Shop and a retired member of the DeKalb County Board of Education.

Crash sends tourists to Erlanger

A beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon was marred for two families of tourists after a motor vehicle crash sent two of them to Erlanger in critical condition.
Officers are asking for help in identifying a white vehicle reported to be in the area at the time of the crash.
According to Trooper Mark Dial with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 2005 red Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Rolf Matthies, 59, of Germany, was traveling westbound on Highway 70 near the 21-mile marker. Passengers in the Cavalier were Lugeborg Matthies, 56, and Coriena Matthies, 25, both of Germany.

The idea for Highlands Initiative began two years ago with a collaborative effort between White, Putnam and Overton counties, and the official kick-off Sept. 20 was the beginning of a marketing
plan that will enhance regional economical development.

Hutson arrested on drug and theft charges

Just before 7 a.m., Thursday morning, White County Sheriff Deputy Mike Payne was dispatched to Holland Fabrication on Smithville Highway about a theft.
According to the report, Mark Holland, owner of Holland Fabrication had arrived at the business and discovered a white male loading a pickup truck with property belonging to Holland.
Mark attempted to block the vehicle until authorities arrived, but the suspect managed to go around the owner and flee northbound on Highway 136. The suspect was then observed traveling east on Highway 70 toward Sparta.
Payne intercepted the subject vehicle near the city limits where Detective Chris Isom assisted.
