City budget fails to pass

Sparta Mayor Tommy Pedigo said “it’s back to square one” for the City of Sparta budget after members of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen failed to approve the financial plan for 2005-2006.
The second and final reading of the budget was scheduled for the Thursday night meeting of the board. However, Ben Holland expressed concern about the new fiscal plan.

When the Lopez family does something, they do not take shortcuts, whatever they do, they do it right.
After selling one successful convenience store business in White County, Jose Lopez began looking for his next endeavor and found it in the form of another community grocery store / gas station.
Jose’s opened in the former Hatfield’s Market location at 1714 Roberts Matthews Highway and proceeded to put the ‘Lopez’ touch on it. He and his wife DaWanna are revamping and expanding the deli area, have installed new gas pumps and are in the process of finishing a convenient drive-through window.

Crash claims Sparta man

An early Sunday morning crash on Highway 70 in DeKalb County near the White County line took the life of one Sparta man, and sent a Sparta woman to the hospital.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, White County emergency personnel, including volunteer firefighters, EMS, EMA and law enforcement officials, responded to the crash scene at approximately 8:20 a.m., Sept. 18, 2005, to assist DeKalb County and state troopers.
The report said a 1997 Chrysler, driven by Scott L. David, 27, of Sparta, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 70 when he apparently crossed the centerline and struck a 1991 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Linda J. Champman, 54, … CONTINUED


Virgil Allen Clark

Virgil Allen Clark, 71, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 15, 2005.
He was born Sept. 22, 19933, in Paducah, Ky., to Harry and Knoxie Ashley Clark.
Clark served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and had been employed by Townsend Textron Fastening System.
He was preceded in death by his parent; and one grandson, Joshua.

Lt. Col. William E. Brown

Lt. Col. William Ernie Brown, 86, of Knoxville, passed away Sept. 16, 2005.
Brown was born March 2, 1919, in White County, to Ernest L. Brown and Cora Stewart Brown.
Brown retired as Lt. Col. from the U.S. Army in 1972, after 30 years service.
He was a member of Washington Pike United Methodist Church, a charter member, past president and director of West Knoxville Rotary Club, and was a named Paul Harris Fellow.
Brown was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Edwinna Brown.

Vernon Randolph, 72, of Anderson, Ind., passed away Sept. 12, 2005.
Randolph was born in Ravenscroft, Sept. 23, 1933, to Fred and Zonie Lawson Randolph.
He was retired from Emge Packing Company.
Randolph was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors include two daughters, Rogene Loepker and husband Joe, of Lafayette, Ind., Lori Randolph, of Richmond, Ind.; one son, Howard Randolph and wife Jayma, of Richmond, Ind.; one sister, Lois Whitaker and husband Ruben; two brothers, William Randolph and wife Freda, and Gene Randolph, all of Sparta; three grandchildren, Greg Van Dallsen, Jennifer Danaher and Brent Dill; and eight great-grandchildren.

Martha Inez Mitchell Williams, 83, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 13, 2005.
She was born Nov. 20, 1921, in White County, to Hertial and Mattie England Mitchell.
Williams was retired from UCHRA Agency.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Clarence R. Williams.
Survivors include one son, Brian Williams and wife Cindy, of Sparta; one brother, Eugene Mitchell and wife Olene, of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Richard E. Williams, Jason R. She was born May 26, 2005, in Putnam County, to James Thomas Sparks and Frances Katherine Brewington Sparks.
Cole had worked at a shirt factory.

Booby-trapped weapon shoots alleged burglar

A Sparta man was injured when he allegedly entered a home where a shotgun had been rigged to fire if the door was opened.
At approximately 4:37 p.m., Sept. 12, 2005, Deputy Darrin Gongaware was dispatched to Cummings Chapel Road where he encountered Greg Hutchings, 35, of Sparta.
Hutchings was lying in the front yard with ‘most of
his left forearm missing,’ according to the report.
The officer proceeded to give first aid to Hutchings and asked him what had happened.

E-911 board divided about new director

E-911 Director Lee Swindell has been on the job less than four months, and board members are split in their opinions about how the communications center is running.
Tuesday night’s meeting of E-911 board of directors became the scene of disagreement between several board members about how Swindell was handling various managerial decisions at the center. At one point, a calm Jerry Cole Sr. told other board members they needed to “back off” and allow Swindell to do his job.
“One board member does not have authority by himself,” said Cole.
Ben Gardenhire quickly responded.
“I’m not backing off,” said an adamant Gardenhire.
