John Harold Wallace, 78, of Nashville, passed away Sept. 9, 2005.
Wallace was born in White County, to Mal C. and Emma P. Wallace.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a U.S. Navy veteran and owner of Harold Wallace Company.
Wallace was preceded in death by his parents and brother Joe P. Wallace.

Kathleen Belcher Bowling, 87, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 13, 2005.
He was born in Wilder, Va., to Leonard and Rassie Lockhart Belcher.
Bowling was a member of the Church of God, and was retired from General Motors.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Claud Powers; her second husband, Finley Bowling; and one sister, Stella Belcher Senter.
Survivors include one son, Ronald G. Powers and his wife Carol, of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, Denver Belcher, of Bartley, W.Va.; two grandsons, Matt Powers, Martin Powers; and two great-grandchildren, Marty Powers and Maria Powers.

She was born July 30, 1912, in Warren County, to Andrew Jackson and Artimitia Amelia Blanks Cantrell.
Terry was a member of First United Methodist Church and retired from Orchid Beauty Shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R.V. Terry, and one brother, John H. Cantrell Sr.

Blame is being thrown around in every direction with the increase and fluctuation of gas prices.
Why are they going up and down so much? What can be done about it?
Moreover, if nothing can be done about the price, how are people reacting to the rising cost of driving?
With the escalating costs, there has been an increase in gas drive-offs at area gas pumps, and at least three incidents of gas theft from vehicles have been reported to law enforcement in the past two weeks.

White, Putnam and Overton counties, as well as Sparta, Cookeville and Livingston, have combined their efforts in marketing the Upper Cumberland to entice new industries and businesses to locate in this area.
With the Sept. 20, 2005, official kick-off of the Highlands Initiative, the marketing plan will begin to take shape for promoting the positive aspects of the Upper Cumberland.

More than four months after the alleged incident occurred that led to the arrest of a former White County deputy, Jerry Cole Jr., 35, was indicted by the grand jury during Friday’s session.
Cole, who had served under the administration of Sheriff James O’Conner, has been charged by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation with official misconduct, sexual battery and official oppression in connection with an incident that occurred April 26, 2005.
Cole is accused of sexually assaulting an individual who had come to the sheriff’s office to file a report.

Metairie, La., formerly of McMinnville, passed away Sept. 7, 2005.
She was born Dec. 3, 1942, in Warren County to J. R. and Clista Gribble Stiles.

Rachel Officer Cooper, 77, of West Palm Beach, Fla., passed away Aug. 16, 2005.
Cooper was born in White County, to Gleeson and Byrtle Martin Officer.
Cooper is preceded in death by her parents; and husband of 53 years, Hardy S. Cooper.
Survivors include one son, Hardy Steele Cooper Jr.; two daughters, Cheryl Marshman and Julie Weinberger; five grandchildren, all of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and one sister, Ann Grover, of Athens, Ohio.
Services were 10 a.m., Sept. 10, 2005, at First United Methodist Church with burial in Highland Cemetery.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
