Attorney needed says E-911 board member

Official legal counsel for White County E-911 Board of Directors ended in June 2005 when attorney Mike Mahn’s services were not retained, and now members are considering hiring a White County attorney to fill the vacancy.
During the Tuesday night meeting of the board, Sylvia Kennedy told members she felt the board should consider hiring an attorney because of the legal issues and liabilities that could possibly be encountered by the board and communications center.

Car flips several times

The lone occupant in a single car crash on Cherry Creek Road mid-day Tuesday was taken to White County Community Hospital with minor injuries.
Kenneth William Rankin, 39, of Sparta, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and violation of the implied consent law, according to the report filed by White County Sheriff Deputy Jody O’Dell, after the crash occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m., Oct. 11, 2005, on Cherry Creek Road.

Hundreds celebrate at Liberty Square

Hundreds of people came out to show their support for the eighth annual Liberty Square Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005. A car show, performances by “The Whites,” “2nd Time Around,” “Williams and Clark Expedition” and “Heartland,” pageants, and lots of great vendors and booths gave everyone at the celebration lots of entertainment to choose from. Mollie Irene Brown Hutchings, 71, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 11, 2005.
Hutchings was born, Sept. 10, 1934, in White County, to Jim Brown and Margie Irene England Brown.
She was a housewife.
Hutchings was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Merrel Hutchings, of Sparta; one daughter, Deborah Hutchings, of Elwood, Texas; one son, Jerry Hutchings and wife Sherri, of Sparta; one sister, Willene Frasier and husband Jack, of Sparta; two grandchildren, Nikki Hawkins and husband Broc, of Sparta, Gabrielle Hutchings, of Sparta; and one great-grandchild, Shea Hawkins, of Sparta.

Reba Carolyn Torrence, 56, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 12, 2005.
Torrence was born, Nov. 2, 1948, in Sparta, to Jack Ballew and Ellen Harris Ballew.
She was a member of Trinity Assembly, in Algood, and a homemaker.
Torrence was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Carol Torrence.

Michael Johnson, 39, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 6, 2005.
Johnson was born, Feb. 10, 1966, in Sparta, to James E. Johnson and Peggy Cole Johnson.
He had been captain of the 1989 Vanderbilt University football team and was a supervisor in the trucking industry.
Johnson was preceded in death by his father; grandmother, Gracey Johnson; grandfather, Waymon Cole; and one uncle Dale Cole.

M&M high bid for recyclables; Tied vote causes standstill again

M&M Recycling was the highest bidder for White County’s recyclable materials, and now commissioners have stalled their final decision after purchasing committee members split their votes.
For several months, M&M Recycling, which is operated by Mack Seibers, has been the center of controversy at White County Commission meetings, as well as meetings of the Solid Waste Committee and Steering Committees. White County had been hauling its recyclable materials to M&M until the business was cited for violations in April 2005.

Fire under investigation

Authorities are investigating two early morning fires, one on Dave England Road and the other on Horton Road.
Firefighters responded to a structure fire on Dave England Road at approximately 2:30 a.m., Monday morning. When they arrived, firefighters discovered a small trailer engulfed in flames, but not threatening any other structures. The fire was extinguished.
The second fire call went out approximately one hour later. The caller advised E-911 dispatchers the fire could be seen from Franks Ferry Road. City budget passes first reading-again

City of Sparta employees gathered one more time in the meeting room of the board of mayor and aldermen as they waited to hear whether or not their benefits would be cut.
The crowd had dwindled down to half the size since the first meeting several weeks ago where Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen discussed the 2005-2006 budget for City of Sparta. The financial plan contained three points of contention, which included longevity pay, Christmas bonus and equalizing City of Sparta’s employees’ health insurance with that of Sparta Water and Electric System.

Arvus Luke Davis, 68, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 6, 2005.
Davis was born Feb. 5, 1937, in Clay County, to Jack Cortez and Kattie Ivy Burchett Davis.
He served his country as a National Guardsman, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and a Vietnam Veteran.
Davis was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne Davis; two sisters, Zelma Johnson and Kathleen Love.
