Lester Roberts, 66, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 15, 2005.
Roberts was born March 8, 1939, to Norman and Minnie Silcox Roberts.
He had been a laborer.
Roberts was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tony Lynn Roberts; and three brothers, Virgle Roberts, Claude Roberts and Junie Roberts.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Davis Roberts, of Sparta; two sons, Robert Cecil Roberts, Christopher Roberts, both of Cookeville; one brother, Carl Roberts; four sisters, Ola Mae Dial, Gail Blanton, Evelyn Goodson, Dora Weaver, all of Sparta; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

John Robert Neal

John Robert Neal, 78, of Warren County, passed away Oct. 13, 2005.
Neal was born, July 21, 1927, in Warren County, to Ray A. Neal and Mary Winnie Neal Raymond.
He was a World War II Naval Veteran, a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a mason by trade.
Neal was preceded in death by his wife, Callie Neal; and brother Billy Neal.

Deputy is assaulted by man facing DUI charges

A Sparta man, who spit on a White County deputy and cursed the officer, has been charged with DUI after Deputy Craig Wilson smelled a strong odor of alcohol.
White County Sheriff Deputy Craig Wilson was on patrol on Burgess Falls Road at approximately 8:52 p.m., Oct. 3, 2005, when he observed a black Chevrolet pickup truck run a stop sign. The vehicle had only one headlight. According to Wilson’s report, the driver of the truck turned around in the center of the intersection, “squalling” his tires and then began to travel up Old Cookeville Road.

Attorney needed says E-911 board member

Official legal counsel for White County E-911 Board of Directors ended in June 2005 when attorney Mike Mahn’s services were not retained, and now members are considering hiring a White County attorney to fill the vacancy.
During the Tuesday night meeting of the board, Sylvia Kennedy told members she felt the board should consider hiring an attorney because of the legal issues and liabilities that could possibly be encountered by the board and communications center.

Car flips several times

The lone occupant in a single car crash on Cherry Creek Road mid-day Tuesday was taken to White County Community Hospital with minor injuries.
Kenneth William Rankin, 39, of Sparta, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and violation of the implied consent law, according to the report filed by White County Sheriff Deputy Jody O’Dell, after the crash occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m., Oct. 11, 2005, on Cherry Creek Road.
Rankin was traveling south when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and went off the roadway. The vehicle, a gray Chevrolet Lumina, rolled at least three times before coming to a stop … CONTINUED

Hundreds of people came out to show their support for the eighth annual Liberty Square Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005. A car show, performances by “The Whites,” “2nd Time Around,” “Williams and Clark Expedition” and “Heartland,” pageants, and lots of great vendors and booths gave everyone at the celebration lots of entertainment to choose from. Michael Johnson, 39, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 6, 2005.
Johnson was born, Feb. 10, 1966, in Sparta, to James E. Johnson and Peggy Cole Johnson.
He had been captain of the 1989 Vanderbilt University football team and was a supervisor in the trucking industry.
Johnson was preceded in death by his father; grandmother, Gracey Johnson; grandfather, Waymon Cole; and one uncle Dale Cole.

Torrence was born, Nov. 2, 1948, in Sparta, to Jack Ballew and Ellen Harris Ballew.
She was a member of Trinity Assembly, in Algood, and a homemaker.
Torrence was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Carol Torrence.
