2006 not without its share of tragedies

As 2006 draws to a close, it is time for reflection on the happenings from the past 12 months. Some are of a positive nature, while many others were tragic.
The following are some of the stories that changed the lives of family and friends as they dealt with the tragedies they faced in 2006.
Sparta man shot and killed
David Anthony Welch, 21, of Sparta was shot and killed at the Smithville home of his girlfriend, Heather Trapp, 23, who was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center with two gunshot wounds.
Michael Edward Johnson, of Sparta, and Tina R. Bain, of Smithville, were each charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
One killed, four injured in crash
Tragedy marred a beautiful spring day when a crash claimed the life of a White County woman and sent four to the hospital.
Sandra Hutchings Maynard, 53, of Sparta, was traveling on Highway 70 west, March 30, 2006, on a Harley Davidson. Traveling westbound on the highway was a 2004 Dodge Caravan, driven by Shirley Jean Wilson, 35, of Sparta.
Trooper Bobby Barker said Wilson traveled off the roadway on the right shoulder, overcorrected her vehicle, lost control, and came over into the eastbound lane of traffic, striking Maynard.
Hyatt dies in motorcycle crash
According to law enforcement officials, a White County man was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle that failed to yield.
James Donald “J.D.” Hyatt, 24, of Sparta, lost his life April 22, 2006, when his 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle was struck by a 1999 Ford Explorer driven by Betty Roberts Kirby, 63, of Sparta.
Two die in Saturday crash
Everett South, 59, and Dorothy South, 51, both of Walling, were killed shortly before 1 a.m., April 29, 2006, when their 1999 Jeep Cherokee struck a large boulder in Smith County.
Everett was driving the Jeep Cherokee and traveling east on interstate 40, at mile marker 264, near Carthage, when the vehicle ran off the road into the median and struck a large boulder head-on.
Crash claims life of Sparta woman
Sally A. Turner, 67, was killed when her vehicle, a 2002 Ford Focus, was struck head on by a 1995 Mercury Mystique driven by April Gentry, 23, of Sparta. The crash occurred on Ravenscroft Road
Trooper Micheal Jolley, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, said Turner was traveling southwest on West Ravenscroft at approximately 4 p.m., May 12, 2006.
Gentry was traveling northeast on West Ravenscroft when she crossed the centerline and traveled into the oncoming lane, striking Turner head-on.
Sparta woman dies in crash in Van Buren County
Cheryl R. Maynard, 57, of Sparta died in a one-vehicle crash that occurred in Van Buren County.
According to a report by Trooper Kevin Ballew, Maynard was traveling westbound on State Highway 285, near Spencer, when her 2005 Jeep left the roadway after it topped a hill. The vehicle then struck a tree, rolled over one time, and landed right side up in a creek.
Motorcycle crash fatal for Sparta man
William J. Daniels, 38, of Sparta, lost his life after crashing his motorcycle into a tree.
According to Deputy Lanny Wheeler, Daniels was traveling south on Eastland Road on a 1994 Suzuki motorcycle.
While attempting to negotiate a curve, Daniels lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, crossing a ditch and driveway, then crashing into a tree.
Doyle woman killed in crash
Patricia Meeks, 41, was ejected from the vehicle in which she was a passenger.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol dispatcher in the Cookeville office, the report filed by Trooper Darrell Gribble and Trooper Ronnie Simmons stated Meeks was sitting in the right front seat of a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Mattie Stewart, 38, of McMinnville.
The Suburban was traveling west on U.S. Highway 70 South on a wet roadway.
While Stewart was negotiating a curve, she lost control of the vehicle and went off the right side of the highway.
According to the report, the Suburban rotated 90 degrees and then overturned, ejecting Meeks.
Spakes loses life in Baltimore crash
Jonathan Lee Spakes, 21-year-old son of Beverly and Don Wilson, of Sparta, and Charles and Cindy Spakes, of Doyle, was killed when the van he was a passenger in struck a vehicle on interstate 895 in Baltimore, Md.
Knowles dies in crash
Billy Lee Knowles, 36, of Sparta, was killed when a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer overturned in a rural section of southern White County.
The crash occurred on Lost Creek Road, in the Hickory Valley Community.
Highway 84 scene of deadly crash
Shane Reed Ledford, 32, of Sparta, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 84.
On Oct. 16, 2006, Ledford was traveling south on Highway 84 when he lost control of the 1994 GMC pickup truck he was driving. Ledford ran off the highway and struck a rock embankment on the left side of the road.
After striking the embankment, the vehicle spun around and came to a final rest approximately 75 feet from the point of impact.
17-year old dies in fall
A White County High School student was laid to rest after a fatal fall from the top of the county-owned rock quarry on Roberts-Matthews Highway.
According to Ron Bennett, director of White County Emergency Services, a call was received at 1:05 p.m., Nov. 25, 2006, about “someone falling in the rock quarry” at 1928 Roberts-Matthew Highway.
The victim was Bret Michael Sherman of Sparta.
Crash claims the life of 72-year-old
A 72-year-old Sparta man lost his life in a motor vehicle crash.
According to Trooper David Slatton, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, Malcolm D. Price of Sparta, was traveling westbound on McMinnville Highway, near Sparta National Guard Armory, when he crossed the centerline of the roadway into the path of a 1998 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
