Wanted fugitive captured; meth lab found

In just matter of moments Sunday night, White County Sheriff Department officials took into custody Shirleen Mabe Key, 33, of Illinois, and Robert D. Streeval, 43, of Sparta.
At approximately 5 p.m., April 23, 2006, deputies Dale Bumbalough and Charles Dennis arrived at 1532 Burgess Falls Road with a federal warrant for Key from Cannon County. According to Bumbalough, Key was wanted on a federal indictment for prior drug charges and violation of probation in Cannon and Putnam counties.

County and sheriff face lawsuit

Three months after a former White County deputy pled ‘no contest’ to four felony charges that included sexual battery, the plaintiff in the case has filed a lawsuit in Circuit Court that asks for compensatory and punitive damages from the county, the sheriff and the former deputy.
According to the official lawsuit, Rachel Szabo, 23, of Bloomington Springs, is asking she be awarded a judgment against the defendants “and each of them, jointly and severally for compensatory and incidental damages in the amount of $130,000 and punitive damages, if applicable.”

Storm causes considerable damage

As the old saying goes, “If March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb,” and according to Mike Prater, district manager with Ben Lomand Telephone Cooperative, spring has been bad, but it could have been a lot worse.
Although White County has ‘dodged a bullet,’ with the recent tornado damage, heavy thunderstorms, hail, lightning and high winds have wreaked havoc on the area.
The spring of 2006 has brought several tornadoes to Tennessee, causing thousands of dollars of damage and taking the lives of 36 people in April alone.

Peggy Lee Wright, 80, of Granville, passed away April 24, 2006, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Wright was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Granville, to Earnest Oliver and Dona Mae Williamson Lee.
She had been a member of Granville United Methodist Church and had been serving as president of the Granville Cemetery Board.
She received her master’s degree at Tennessee Tech University and began her teaching and coaching career at Upperman High School in Baxter, in 1953. She coached the Upperman girls’ basketball team to the state tournament semi-Finals, in 1982. She enjoyed her career in coaching basketball. She was an avid golfer, artist and enjoyed fishing. Curtis Lee Pinegar

Curtis Lee Pinegar was born in White County to Vina Mae Pinegar and the late Amos Pinegar.
He was a retired contractor and former president of the Tennessee Home Builders Association. He was also a member of Silverdale Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, Pinegar is survived by one son, Darrell Pinegar, of Chattanooga, and a brother, Allen Pinegar, of Sparta.
Funeral services were April 17, 2006, with burial in the National Cemetery of Chattanooga.
Chattanooga Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Paul Edward Farley, 71, of Sparta, passed away April 25, 2006, at Kindred Hospital in Nashville.
Farley was born Dec. 23, 1934, in White County, to Beecher Bradley and Lena Louise Jones Farley.
He served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard and was retired from the military.
Farley was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Neldia Zornes Farley, of Sparta; brother, Jack Farley and wife Sylvia, of Sparta; nephew, Mark Farley and wife Carla, of Sparta; niece, Phyllis Cole, of Sparta; and six great-nieces and great-nephews.

Leslie Harrison Cope, 79, of Michigan, passed away April 19, 2006.
Cope was born Nov. 20, 1926, in Michigan, to Lloyd Nowlin Cope and Rowena Smith Cope
He served as a merchant in the Marines and had been a draftsman.
Cope was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his sister, Evelyn Bowles and husband Richard, of Clermont, Fla.
Services were 2 p.m., April 24, 2006, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Old Zion Cemetery. David Lee England officiated.

Patricia Ann Myers, 58, of Spencer, passed away April 23, 2006, at River Park Hospital.
Myers was born Feb. 14, 1948, in Painesville, Ohio, to W.C. Davis and Alma Denton Davis.
She had been a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughter, Teresa Roberts, of McMinnville; son, William Avery Myers, of Charolette, N.C.; parents, W.C. and Alma Davis, of Spencer; brother, Eugene Davis, of Spencer; and grandchildren, Bradi Roberts, Drew Roberts, Madison Myers, Tatum Myers and Will Myers.

Ernest Edward Bernard passed away April 22, 2006.
He passed away from cardiac arrest in Meter, Calif. His home was in the Cuyanna Valley, in California.
He had many wonderful friends who loved and helped him. He was always there to help his friends and family.

Hyatt dies in motorcycle crash

A White County man died Saturday afternoon when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle that, according to law enforcement officials, failed to yield.
James Donald “J.D.” Hyatt, 24, of Sparta, was killed at approximately 3:20 p.m., April 22, 2006, when his 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle was struck by a 1999 Ford Explorer.
According to Sgt. Dale Dodson, of Sparta Police Department, the crash occurred at the intersection of West Bockman Way and Cook Street, near Burger King.
Hyatt was traveling westbound on West Bockman Way.
