George Lee Geer

George Lee Geer, 83, of Spencer, passed away April 21, 2006, in Nashville.
Geer was born Jan. 21, 1923, in White County, George Eldridge Geer and Amanda Randolph Geer.
He attended First Community Church of Sparta and was a retired pipe fitter.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Mary Shannon Geer, of Spencer; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Larry Bates, of Monterey, Brenda and R.L. Young, of Spencer, and Anita and Keith Oakes, of Pikeville; two sons and daughters-in-law, George E. and Judy Geer, of Morrison, and Robert and Marie Geer, of McMinnville; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mexican crystal meth delivered to Sparta woman

A 45-year-old Sparta woman was arrested Monday after she accepted a package from a delivery service that containing crystal meth.
According to detectives Chris Isom and John Ford, of White County Sheriff Department, Brenda Sweatt Beard, 45, of Sparta, was arrested and charged with multiple drug offenses after the drug task force agent investigated a package set to be delivered to Beard by a White County delivery service.
Isom and Ford said Deputy Dale Bumbalough, of White County Sheriff Department, had received information from the delivery service a shipment of ‘Mexican ice’ [crystal meth] had been discovered.

TennCare to bid out transportation services

In a move that has been decried by ambulance service directors in the Upper Cumberland as disregarding the welfare of TennCare recipients, the healthcare provider has announced it will be consolidating its non-emergency transportation services to a single vendor system.
TennCare officials announced several weeks ago bids for non-emergency transportation services would open in May 2006.
Non-emergency transportation services include picking up TennCare enrollees who have no other transportation to meet their scheduled doctor appointments. TennCare Bureau’s nine different managed care and behavioral healthcare organizations now provide non-emergency transportation, which all have varying transportation delivery systems.

Interim hospital CEO announces OB stays

Good news on two fronts came to White Countians this week when Community Health Systems, owner of White County Community Hospital, announced the obstetrics department will remain in operation and an interim chief executive officer has been named to head the facility.
It was announced publicly at the White County commissioners meeting Monday the application for the cessation of obstetrics services at WCCH, which had been placed with the state medical board, had been verbally withdrawn.
According to interim hospital CEO Cathryn Hibbs, who began her duties Tuesday, the formal letter was to be submitted Wednesday morning to the state board.

Keith Ryan Young, 22, of Detroit, Mich., passed away April 12, 2006.
Young was born June 13, 1983, in Detroit, Mich., to Kay Marie Ridding Young and Richard Keith Young.
He had been a laborer.
Young was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother, Kay Young, of Gulf Shores, Ala.; one sister, Kenna Hyles, of Michigan; one brother, Kyle Young; grandparents, Bobby Young, of Sparta, Dianne Hayes, of Michigan; great-grandparents, Ida Ridding, Elaine Benson, both of Michigan; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Ernestine “Ernie” Bennet, 84, of Chesterfield, Ind., passed away April 14, 2006.
Bennett was born Sept. 26, 1921, in White County, and lived most of her life in Madison County, Ind.
She worked in production at Delco Romy for 30 years, retiring in 1981.
Bennett was a member of Chesterfield Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Bennett; one daughter, Mary Bousman; two granddaughters; two brothers; one sister, and two sons-in-law.

Ernest Christian, 78, of Spencer, passed away April 13, 2006, at his residence.
Christian was born April 1, 1928, in Van Buren County, to Walter Christian and Eliza Mooneyham Christian.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a timber worker.
Christian was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Tom Christian; and two sisters, Joann Taylor and Annie Mae Beam.
Survivors include his wife, Maude Ella Christian, of Spencer; one son, Glynn Christian, of Spencer; one daughter, Deborah Burch, of Spencer; two grandchildren, Justin Aughinbaugh and Erica Burch; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrest made in bridge arson

Less than one week after arson damaged the walking bridge at the South Carter Street Park, an 18-year-old male has been arrested and charged with arson.
“Everyone did a great job and worked very hard on this case,” said Chief Jeff Guth, of Sparta Police Department.
Daniel Lee Sumner, 18, of Sparta, was brought in for questioning Thursday.
Sgt. Jeff Hutson, fire investigator with Sparta Police Department, along with Greg Whittaker, agent with Tennessee Bomb and Arson Squad, had been working on the case and gathering information.
