Bethel Carson Roberts, 70, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 10, 2006.
Roberts was born March 29, 1936, in White County, to Henry Clayborne Roberts and Lovie Helen Davis Roberts.
He had been a laborer.
Roberts was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Casto Roberts, Louis Stanton Roberts; and one sister, Maggie Nell Roberts.
Survivors include his wife, Willene Forsythe Roberts, of Sparta; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Hollie Roberts, of Walling; one daughter, Denise Roberts, of Sparta; three grandchildren, Bobby Roberts Jr., Nikkie Hesson, Amber Knowles; one great-grandson, Gavin Hesson; one step-son, Michael Cope and wife Trina, of Spencer; one step-daughter, Gail Muciek and husband … Read More

James R. Griffin

James R. Griffin, 49, of Smithville, passed away Nov. 10, 2006, at DeKalb Community Hospital.
Griffin was born to Martin Ross Griffin and Izena Young Griffin.
He had been a construction worker.
Griffin was preceded in death by his father, Martin Ross Griffin; and his grandparents, Edith and Monroe Young; and Isiah and Edna Griffin.
Survivors include his mother, Izene Young Griffin, of Smithville; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Steve Merriman, of Smithville; and two nephews, Steve and Jake Merriman, both of Smithville.
Services were 1 p.m., Nov. 12, 2006, at Love-Cantrell Chapel, with burial in Peeled Chestnut Cemetery.

Looney was born July 8, 1945, in DeKalb County, to Charlie Reed Looney and Arrie Morene Lance Looney.
He had been a truck driver.
Looney was preceded in death by his father.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and most of all his family and friends.

Gladys “Marie” Cravens, 81, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 9, 2006, at her residence.
Cravens was born Aug. 8, 1925, in White County, to Zollie Mansfield Polston and Ola Mae Boldin Polston.
She lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her father and loving step-mother, Jewel Farley Polston.
She had been a homemaker, enjoyed sewing, quilting, and most of all enjoyed her friends and family.
Cravens was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl Casto Cravens; step-mother; two sons, Donald Dewayne Cravens, infant son; and one brother, Clifford Monroe Polston.

Betty Sue Johnson Rich, 78, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 9, 2006, at Life Care Center in Sparta.
Rich was born Aug. 6, 1928, in Putnam County, to Harvey Brett Johnson and Ura Opal Scott Johnson.
Rich was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 40 years, Daniel Boyd Rich.
She retired after more than 30 years of teaching in the White County School System, and Marion County Florida School System. Thanksgiving is the time of year when people reflect on all the blessings they have been given, and for one White County lady it is the most enjoyable holiday of the year.
Kathy Stamper has been cooking Thanksgiving Dinner for her family 57 years, and she finds much joy and pleasure in preparing a bountiful feast for the ones she loves.
“I have cooked Thanksgiving dinner all these years,” said Stamper, “and I guess I always will,” One year, all the kids had obligations to spend the holiday with other family members, but I cooked it all anyway and sat down and ate by myself.”

School Board discusses county report card

The 2006 White County Schools Report Card has been released and all elementary schools met federal benchmarks for adequate progress.
White County Board of Education members were pleased with the results of the report that were given to them during the Thursday night meeting. With the exception of students with disabilities, White County High School and White County Middle also met required standards.

Hepatitis C screenings available free

White County Health Council is pursuing its mission to help the community with healthcare needs by funding Hepatitis C screenings for people who fall in the high-risk category of contracting the disease.
Effie Lowery, health council member and an adamant advocate for these screenings, is responsible for securing the grant several years ago. Some of the money was used to fund Hepatitis B shots. Lowery appeared before the council in October 2006 and requested the remainder of the money be used to screen individuals who are at-risk for Hepatitis C.

Scams prevalent in White County

Law enforcement officials have been alerted to some scams that prey mostly on senior citizens and are becoming a vast part of their daily workload.
The first sign of trouble is when a person receives a letter stating he or she has won a large amount of money, usually in a sweepstakes or lottery. Detective Chris Isom, of White County Sheriff Department, said those who receive these types of correspondences should be skeptical about their origin.
“We’ve had five in two days,” said Isom, when he spoke with The Expositor on Thursday. “We’ve gotten a little bit of both. They all function the same way.”… Read More

Furlon W. Bryant

Furlon Bryant, 57, of Spencer, passed away June 13, 2005.
Bryant was born, in Van Buren County, to Butler Bryant and Euna W. Bryant.
He was a member of the Mt. Elim Baptist Church and was retired from USA Enterprise.
Bryant was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include four daughters, Pamela R. McDonald, Kimberly Dawson, Emma Scott, all of Spencer, and Amanda Bryant, of Sparta; one son, Shannon Bryant, of Pikeville; five grandchildren; one sister, Patricia Bryant Hodges, of McMinnville; and his mother.
Gravesides services were 2 p.m., Nov. 12, 2006, at Long Cemetery.
Ricky Rigsby officiated.
