Vandals strike Highland Cemetery, again

Sparta alderwoman Debbie Sopha said she would not rest until the vandals who desecrated gravesites at Highland Cemetery twice in less than three months are caught and prosecuted.
Sopha spoke out during the Dec. 21, 2006, meeting of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen about the recent incidents and said she is determined to pursue the matter until law enforcement officials prosecute the offenders.
The first incident of vandalism occurred sometime between Oct. 6 and Oct. 7. The second act of vandalism happened approximately two weeks ago. Sopha said the entrance gates have been locked at night, but vandals are still accessing the cemetery on … Read More

As 2006 draws to a close, it is time for reflection on the happenings from the past 12 months. Some are of a positive nature, while many others were tragic.

Could DeWhite Utility’s new rulings hinder growth?

A White County land developer recently told county commissioners new regulations instituted by DeWhite Utility District could possibly slow down growth in the area serviced by the water provider.
Larry Frasier addressed commissioners during their Dec. 18, 2006, meeting and advised them of the changes in DeWhite’s rulings that will attach additional costs to land development.
Frasier, who has most recently been developing 115 lots off Fred Hill Road, said the added expense might force him to cease his project.

Betty Josephine Bell McDonald passed away Dec. 20, 2006, at NHC Healthcare, in Cookeville.
McDonald was born May 29, 1926, in Columbia, to Joseph Fearon Bell and Bladys Grissom Bell.
She was a retired public school teacher who had taught at Jere Whitson, Capshaw, Sycamore and Bloomington Springs schools, in Putnam County, and Walling Elementary, in White County.
McDonald had attained a master’s degree in school counseling at TTU.
She had been a member of Jere Whitson Road Church of Christ, in Cookeville.
McDonald had been a charter member and first president of the Sally Tompkins Chapter #2123 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Billy David Hicks, 68, of Old Hickory, passed away Dec. 22, 2006, at his residence.
Hicks was born in White County, to Ike and Opal Franklin Hicks.

Mary Lou Taylor Cantrell, 88, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 21, 2006, at her residence.
Cantrell was born Feb. 2, 1918, in DeKalb County, to Herman F. Taylor and Dellar Henderson Taylor.

Doot was born May 10, 1973, in Livonia, Mich., to Larry Doot and Sandra Longbrake Kadar.
He had served in the U.S. Air Force before graduating from Eastern Michigan with a degree in finance and went on to receive his MBA in finance.
He was most recently employed at Allstate Banking, developing the bank in the Chicago area.

Two killed in separate crashes

A 72-year-old Sparta man lost his life in a motor vehicle crash that shut down McMinnville Highway for several hours early Tuesday morning.
According to Trooper David Slatton, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Malcolm D. Price, of Sparta, was traveling westbound on McMinnville Highway, near Sparta National Guard Armory, when he crossed the centerline of the roadway into the path of a 1998 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m., Dec. 19, 2006.
