Rural Development lends a hand

Jerry and Michele Hall, new residents of White County, have a home thanks to United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development.
Through a generous loan, the Halls have a new house for Christmas. The family moved from Lennon, Mich., because of the increasing prices of the city and scarcity of house availability. Real estate had decreased in the town where they had previously lived causing the Halls to look for a new life elsewhere.
Finding a reasonable price for a livable place was important. Jerry, disabled, and Michele, a housewife, did not have enough financially to invest in a home. The Halls decided to get help … Read More

Her appearance can be deceiving as to the future plans for an 8-week-old Labrador retriever who will become the newest member of the White County Sheriff Department K-9 unit.
Cocoa, who is full of energy and still has the playful spirit of a young puppy, will officially be trained in the next few months to sniff out some of the deadliest drugs known to law enforcement.
According to Sgt. Charlie Sims, a White County family who wishes to remain anonymous donated the dark-colored canine. Sims said he and the entire sheriff department is grateful to these individuals because their generosity helped curtail the expense associated … Read More

A 72-year-old Sparta man lost his life in a motor vehicle crash that shut down McMinnville Highway for several hours early Tuesday morning.
According to Trooper David Slatton, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Malcolm D. Price, of Sparta, was traveling westbound on McMinnville Highway, near Sparta National Guard Armory, when he crossed the centerline of the roadway into the path of a 1998 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m., Dec. 19, 2006.

Helen L. Foutch, 69, of McMinnville, passed away Dec. 15, 2006, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
She had been a member of Forest Park Baptist Church.
Foutch was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Audrey Idell Clark Gooch, and one brother, Gary M. Gooch.

Earl C. Gooch, 90, of Morgan County, passed away Dec. 17, 2006.
Gooch was born Sept. 9, 1916, in White County, to E.E. and Gurnia Gooch.
He had been a founding member of Oak Grove Church and had worked several years with Morgan County Fair Association, Morgan County Farm Bureau and was a member of the board of directors for the Morgan County Co-op.
He had also been a member of the ACSC of Morgan County.
He had retired after 43 years with the U.S. Postal Service.

Malcolm David Price, 72, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 19, 2006, at White County Community Hospital.
Price was born June 30, 1934, in Coffee County, to Martin and Mattie Lee Dodson Price.
He had worked for the State of Tennessee and had been in the National Guard.

Law enforcement officials and private citizens will soon be serviced more efficiently with the installation of new equipment at White County Communications Center.
From the confines a closet-sized space to the center now on Crossville Highway, dispatching services for Sparta and White County law enforcement has steadily progressed. Now, the center is in the process of an equipment changeover that will provide the latest developments in technological innovation and enable dispatchers to more effectively perform their jobs.
