Howard Andrew Pugh Sr., 69, of Sparta, passed away July 25, 2007.
Pugh was born Aug. 30, 1937, to Andrew Arthur Pugh and Ethel Gore Pugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Pugh, of Crossville; one son, Howard Andrew Pugh Jr., of Ohio; one brother, Harold Pugh, of Pleasant Hill; three stepsons, Randy Rutherford, Anthony Rutherford, Mike Johnson, all of Sparta; three stepdaughters, Katy Miller, Regina Cope, Juone Rutherford, all of Sparta; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m., July 28, 2007, at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Pugh Cemetery … Read More

Christine Jones Hutchings, 87, of Cookeville, passed away July 24, 2007.
Hutchings was born May 18, 1920, in White County, to George and Erma Fuson Jones.
She retired from Christine’s Place Ladies Apparel, in Sparta, after 55 years as owner and operator and was a member of Findlay Church of Christ.
Hutchings was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tillman Hutchings; and two sisters, Nell Roberts and Jewell Andrews.

Mary M. Goolsby, 91, of Cookeville, passed away July 24, 2007.
Goolsby was born Oct. 30, 1915, in Putnam County, to Albert and Martha Sarajane Golden Steel.
She had been a homemaker, and was a member of the Church of Christ, MacBroom’s Chapel.
Goolsby was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, “W” Selby, Tom Goolsby; one sister, Effie Mae Steel; and three brothers, J.C. Steel, Everette J. Steel and Samuel B. Steel.
Survivors include one sister, Pauline Hammons, of Antioch, Calif., and 21 nieces and nephews.

Hendrikus Willem ‘Henry’ Bresser Sr.

Hendrikus Willem ‘Henry’ Bresser Sr., 88, of Sparta, passed away July 20, 2007.
Bresser was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Arnhem, Netherlands, to Nicolaas W. and Louisa S. Jansen Bresser.
He was a retired music teacher.
Bresser was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Hendrika ‘Rickya’ Ponsen Bresser, of Sparta; two daughters, Louisa Warren, of Cortiz, Colo., Elizabeth Farmakis, of Sparta; two sons, Cornelis Bresser, of Sparta, Hendrikus Bresser Jr., of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Private family services will be at a later date.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home-Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie Ruth Wilson Young, 79, of Sparta, passed away July 22, 2007.
Young was born April 17, 1928, in White County, to John Thomas Wilson and Iva Mae Anderson Wilson.
She was retired from Thomas Industries.
Young was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Louise Gilbert, Clara Thompson, and Trudy Etherton.
Survivors include John Thomas ‘Tom’ Young, of Sparta; two daughters, Elaine Frey, of Nashville, Brenda Williams and husband J.T., of Joelton; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Kelli Young, of Cookeville; two grandchildren, Noah Young, McKenna Young, both of Cookeville; two sisters, Essie Cope, Mary Wilson, of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellis Claire ‘Red’ Sparkman, 86, of Kingsport, formerly of Doyle, passed away July 23, 2007.
Sparkman was born July 9, 1921, in White County, to Ellis C. Sparkman and Mattie Sparkman.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Seabees, and retired from the Dupont factory in Old Hickory.
Sparkman was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanette Sparkman; one daughter, Jeanie Sparkman; and one brother, Thomas Sparkman.
Survivors include six sons, Steve Sparkman, Jeff Sparkman, Joe Gamble, Gary Gamble, Kenny Gamble, Rick Gamble; two daughters, Pam Hallet, Melody Bowles; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lewis Wallace Tate, 79, of Sparta, passed away July 10, 2007.
Tate was born Nov. 11, 1927, in Mississippi, to Harry Frank and Jewel Marie Howell Tate.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy with service in both Vietnam and Korean wars.
Tate was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Frank Tate and Jim Tate.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Scott Tate, of Sparta; two daughters, Laurel Jo Hunter and husband Morris Hunter, of Franklin, Cynthia Lynn Tate, of Sparta; two sisters, Barbara Insley, of Maryland, Marie Ayers, of Indiana; one sister-in-law, Isabel Clouse, of Sparta; and two grandchildren, Emilee Hunter and Aimee Hunter.

Not that long ago, it appeared as though Sparta would be losing its tie to the nationally known electronics giant, Radio Shack.
However, one White County businessman stepped in and has re-opened the ‘chain’ outlet, but with differences that will now make it stand out.

Bateman picked up in Warren County

White County Sheriff Department is happy to have one more violator as a resident at White County Jail.
Michael D. Bateman, 37, has been wanted for violation of probation since Jan. 11, 2001.
According to Detective Chris Isom, Bateman was picked up in Warren County, from a tip, “because they saw it on the website.”
Bateman was booked into the White County Jail, on July 18, and is being held without bond.

Sparta man killed in motorcycle crash

A 39-year-old White County man lost his life in a single vehicle motorcycle crash on Mayland Road Wednesday.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, John A. Burg, of Red Road in Sparta, was killed at approximately 9:25 a.m., July 18, 2007.
Trooper David Jones said Burg was traveling south on Mayland Road, in Cumberland County. Burg passed a vehicle “on the double yellow line approaching a curve, and lost control while negotiating the curve. Burg then left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree on the side of the roadway.”
