Is ‘helping hand’ being ignored?

Just a few names into last week’s general sessions court docket found another young person’s pre-trial diversion agreement in peril.
At the time it didn’t look good for Stephen Farley, but a decision won’t be made in his case until at least July 27.
Farley appeared before Judge Sam Benningfield on the initial appearance portion of last week’s docket facing a possible termination of his pre-trial diversion agreement. The agreement was finalized March 2, 2007. But after only a few months, it appears Farley was having trouble living up to his end of the ‘deal.’

Couple airlifted after crash

A Sparta woman continues to recover from injuries sustained when an 87-year-old struck the pickup truck her husband was driving.
According to Sgt. Dale Dodson, Sparta Police Department,
at approximately 12:16 p.m., July 15, 2007, Floyd Cooley, 87, of Sparta, pulled out of his driveway onto North Spring Street.
Cooley was driving a 1998 Chrysler Concord. When he entered the roadway, he struck a vehicle driven by J.V. Roberts, 73, of Sparta. Roberts was traveling north on North Spring Street.
Dodson said Cooley collided with the 2003 Ford Ranger, driven by Roberts, in the right door, causing the Ranger to spin right and then roll over … CONTINUED


Robert Lee Davis

Robert Lee Davis, 87, of Spencer, passed away July 16, 2007.
Davis was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Van Buren County, to William C. and Maggy L. Hastings Davis.
He had worked as a farmer.
Davis was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Willine Davis, Lorine Davis; and one brother, Ray Davis.
Survivors include one son, Derick Davis; two brothers and sisters-in-law, W.C. and Alma Davis, and Earnest and Louise Davis, all of Spencer.
Services will be 2 p.m., July 19, 2007, at Love-Cantrell-Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel with burial at Town Cemetery. Gene Brock will officiate.

Elizabeth Marie Osborne Smith

Elizabeth Marie Osborne Smith, 83, of Sparta, passed away July 17, 2007.
Smith was born May 31, 1924, in White County, to James Henry ‘Happy’ Osborne and Mattie Floyd Osborne.
She had retired from Thomas Industries.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy ‘Dot’ Winnett, of Sparta; one niece, Donna Howell, of Sparta; three nephews, Danny Winnett, Derrick Winnett, both of Sparta, Darrell Winnett, of Cookeville; and two great-nephews, James Winnett and Kyle Winnett.
Graveside services were 2 p.m., July 18, 2007, at Town Cemetery in Spencer. Bro. Lofton Graves officiated.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Mildred Pauline McBroom Brewer

Mildred Pauline McBroom Brewer, 79, of Spencer, passed away July 17, 2007.
Brewer was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, to Oliver and Maude Bolin McBroom.
She had been a factory worker.
Brewer was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, William R. Brewer, of Spencer; three sons and daughters-in-law, Martin Henry and Sylvia Brewer, of Portland, Michael Robert and Alma Brewer, of Austin, Texas, Oliver Vern and Joy Brewer, of Nashville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara Ann and Mark Griffith, of Nashville, Polly Brewer, of Nashville; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Bobbie Lee Spears, 71, of Sparta, passed away July 15, 2007.
Spears was born June 20, 1936, in White County, to Jeff and Clara Sherrell Spears.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Sparks Spears, of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Ronnie Choate, of Cookeville; three grandchildren, Kristen Choate, Kelly Choate, Ronnie Lee Choate, all of Cookeville; one great-grandson, Lexus Julian, of Cookeville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Deane and Harold Mills, Treva and Kenneth Cunningham, all of Sparta; and many nieces and nephews.

Nannie Mae Brown, 80, of Sparta, passed away July 10, 2007.
Brown was born March 16, 1927, in Putnam County, to Jacob and Addie Short Lee.
She had been a homemaker.
Brown was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and sisters; one daughter-in-law, Alice Suzette Brown; and two granddaughters, Jennifer Elam and Liva Grady.
Survivors include her husband, Talmadge Brown, of Sparta; three daughters, Lillian Presley, of Cookeville, Evelyn Perkins, of Kentucky, Ruby Brown, of Sparta; four sons, James Brown Sr., of Ohio, Tim Brown Sr., Atwell Pete Brown, Ronald Brown, all of Sparta; one brother, Richard Lee, of Sparta; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

McGinniss was born Feb. 5, 1935, in DeKalb County, to Willie F. and Vinnie Judkins McGinniss.

Brown was born May 14, 1925, in Bloomington Springs, to Edgar Charlie and Willie Mai Tayse Brown.

John Leland Bouldin

John Leland ‘Buster’ Bouldin, 84, of Spencer, passed away July 16, 2007.
Bouldin was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Van Buren County, to Haskel and Massie Bouldin.
He served in the U.S. Army as a private during World War II and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the VFW. He worked as a surveyor for the State of Tennessee.
Bouldin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred Baker Bouldin; and two grandsons, Tom Bouldin and Doug Bouldin.

Bonnie Lee Nash, 86, of Ulysses, Kan., formerly of Sparta, passed away July 13, 2007.
Nash was born Jan. 26, 1921, in White County, to William Stipes ‘Jake’ Ray and Eliza Elizabeth Hampton Ray. She grew up in the Macedonia community and was the ninth of 11 children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of more than 68 years, Doyle R. Nash, who passed away May 3, 2007; six brothers, Casto Ray, Dan Ray, Will Ray, Hillard Ray, Demps Ray, Erbie Ray; two sisters, Almira Graham, Mildred Malone; and one grandson, Patrick Doyle Johnson.

Two well-known area businessmen have joined forces to assist White County buyers with the purchase of that next, and possibly the last, bed they will ever need.
