Wanda Loftis, 64, of Cookeville, passed away Dec. 24, 2007.
Loftis was born May 19, 1943, in Putnam County, to Dewey Clyde Hood and Pearl Hall Allison.
She had been a homemaker.
Loftis was preceded in death by her parents; one brother-in-law, Larry Loftis; one sister-in-law, Minnie Loudell Bumbalough; three uncles, Johnny Hall, Lonnie Hall, Milton Hall; and seven aunts, Artie Beavers, Florence Hall, Elizabeth Ellis, Dorothy Loftis, Vina McCloud, Dovie Tolet and Betty Collins.

Thelma Jean Worthington, 76, of Algood, passed away Dec. 25, 2007.
Worthington was born July 4, 1931, in Jamestown, to Ernest and Mossie Lawson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold G. Worthington; one son, William Ernest Worthington; one brother, Royal William Lawson; and one sister, Joyce Hurst.

Irene Evelyn Brown, 86, of Cookeville, passed away Dec. 20, 2007.
Brown was born April 3, 1921, in Walling, to Horace H. and Mattie E. Brown.
She graduated from White County High School in 1939, was an accomplished seamstress and talented artist.
Brown was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James H. Brown and John F. Brown.
Survivors include one brother, T. Pierce Brown, of Cookeville; cousin, Ray Scoggins, of Quebeck; nephews, Frank Brown, of Tullahoma, Hilary Brown, of Charlotte, Fred Brown, of Henderson, Paul Brown, of Lynchburg, Va.; and several other relatives.

Mailboxes target for damage

Several Christmas cards had a hard time finding their proper homes after more than 40 mailboxes and several vehicles were damaged on Dec. 21 and 22.
The Sparta Police Department is asking for help in finding the person or persons responsible for the overnight vandalism spree.
According to Chief Jeff Guth, sometime after 9 p.m., Dec. 21, 2007, around 40 mailboxes on Virginia Avenue, Turntable Road, Lum, Wagner, Sparkman, East Bronson, West Everett, West Bronson, Saylors, Windsor and South Oak streets were vandalized.
Guth said during the same time frame and in the same areas, several parked vehicles had windows, taillights, and mirrors busted out.

Teen killed in motorcycle crash

Tragedy stuck a Sparta family when a 19-year-old lost his life when the motorcycle he was operating crashed into a car Friday night.
At approximately 6 p.m., Dec. 21, 2007, Kenneth E. Hutson, 19, of Sparta, was traveling south on Will Thompson Road on a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle. He was wearing a safety helmet.
According to Trooper David Slatton, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Crystal Coffman, 27, of Walling, was driving a 2003 Nissan four-door, northbound on Will Thompson Road, when Hutson failed to stop at a stop sign. DNA and hiring illegal aliens among new laws

A new Tennessee law that goes into effect Jan. 1, 2008, will help law enforcement officials bring to justice more quickly those who commit violent felonies.
The law, which will be know as the Johnia Berry Act of 2007, requires that a biological specimen for DNA testing must be taken from any person “arrested” for the commission of a violent felony.

Anna Ruth Hutchings Lowery, 75, of Rossville, Ga., formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 22, 2007.
Lowery was born March 19, 1932, in White County to Olner Hutchings and Sally Mae Keathley Hutchings.
She had been an office clerk in the retail industry.
Lowery was preceded in death by her parents.

Maurine C. Frasier, 81, of Dover, Ohio, formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 25, 2007.
Frasier was born May 26, 1926, in White County, to Ezra and Olivia Davis Cole.
She had been a homemaker, and was retired from Tuscarawas County Ohio courthouse. Frasier attended the New Life Church of God in Dover, and was a member of the Ladies of the Moose, V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Elks, all of Dover.

William Clay ‘Willie’ Phillips, 93, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 21, 2007.
Phillips was born Aug. 27, 1914, in White County, to Dan Phillips and Bessie Lawson Phillips.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a farmer.
Phillips was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Morean Frasier; and one brother, Donald Phillips.

Kenneth Eugene Hutson, 19, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 21, 2007.
Hutson was born Dec. 29, 1987, in White County, to Kenneth Edward Hutson and Lisa Ann Dodson Hutson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Hutson.
Survivors include his parents, Lisa Ann Dodson Hutson and Kenneth Edward Hutson, both of Sparta; one brother, Albert Hutson, of Sparta; grandparents, Fred and Mearline Dodson, of Quebeck, Tina Hutson, of Sparta; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were 2 p.m., Dec. 24, 2007, at Hunter Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Jericho Cemetery. Tim Judd officiated.

Benjamin August Guhse, 93, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 22, 2007.
Guhse was born Feb. 11, 1914, in Ironton, Mo., to A. Ben and Anna Allers Guhse.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a retired game warden, farmer and was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church.
Guhse was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alfreda Walton Guhse; and two brothers, Fred Guhse and Edwin Guhse.

Carmon Ray Green, 80, of Crossville, formerly of Sparta, passed away Dec. 21, 2007.
Green was born March 28, 1927, to James Eaton Green and Lou Alla Adair Green.
He had been a building supervisor.
Green was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Jean Clark Green, of Crossville; one son, Roy Green, of Crossville; four grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, Matthew, Troye; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were 11 a.m., Dec. 24, 2007, at Hunter Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Upper Cherry Creek Cemetery. Doyle Crawford officiated.

Pinion was born Feb. 9, 1921, to Fred Monroe Pinion and Ida Jane Hamblin Pinion.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Pinion loved the outdoors and people.
