Correction officer arrested

Ricky Preston, 22, of Cookeville, a correction officer with the White County Sheriff Department, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with introduction of drugs into a penal facility, drug possession, and possession of schedule II drug.
According to Detective Chris Isom, WCSD spokesperson, at approximately 7 a.m., Jan. 15, 2008, Deputy Kyle Herren and K-9 officer “Max” ran an exploration search of the parking lot at White County Justice Center.
“Max indicated on Preston’s vehicle, and the drug detectives went inside and got him,” said Isom.

Enforcement officer position set

White County officials are readying for enforcement of the recently passed “overgrown vegetation” resolution that will cite property owners for specific violations that will include unsafe conditions and debris.
Members of Steering Committee A, of White County Board of Commissioners, voted Monday night to begin the next step in solidifying the plans for enforcing the recently passed resolution that will make property owners be liable for cleaning up neglected property.

Ishver M. Parek, 59, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 15, 2008.
Parek was born June 1, 1948, in India, to Maganbhai Patel and Gulabben Patel.
Survivors include his wife, Laxmi Patel, of Sparta; one daughter, Taru Patel, of North Carolina; two sons, Dennis Parek, of Florida, Rakesh Parek, of Crossville; his mother, Gulabben Patel, of India; one sister, Sumanben Patel; and one brother, Ramesh Patel, both of Sparta.
Services will be 11 a.m., Jan. 18, 2008, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home Chapel.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kathryn Mitchell Harris, 93, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 12, 2008.
Harris was born Feb. 3, 1914, in White County, to Waymon Mansfield and Florence Steakley Mitchell.
She graduated from White County High School and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University Harris taught at elementary and high schools in Doyle, Lebanon and Nashville. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Sparta Woman’s Club, Lebanon Woman’s Club, ADK Educational Sorority, the White County Retired Teachers’ Association and Sparta First Baptist Church.

Franklin D. Mason, 73, of Quebeck, passed away Jan. 16, 2008.
Mason was born April 24, 1934, in White County, to Ray Mason and Augustis Cox Mason.
He was retired and was a member of the Baptist church.
Mason was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Donnie McCormick Mason, of Quebeck; two sons, Kenny Mason, Dwight Mason, both of Quebeck; one daughter, Kathy Mason, of Collierville; stepchildren, Carol Lee Crouch, of Morrison, Peggy Woods, Walton Blair, both of McMinnville; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, R. L. Mason, of Quebeck; and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred Ruth Manus, 87, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 12, 2008.
Manus was born Sept. 19, 1920, in White County, to William Floyd Parker and Emma Ann Rittenberry.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard J.B. Manus; and four brothers, Ray Parker, Clay Parker, Jerry Parker and Ernest Parker.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dwight Lee and Gayle Winnett, and one grandson, Stephen Winnett, all of Sparta.
Services were 1 p.m., Jan. 14, 2008, at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Highland Cemetery. Bro. Dwight Fuqua officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Margie Mai Gilliam Hamilton

Margie Mai Gilliam Hamilton, 96, of Cookeville, passed away Jan. 11, 2008.
Hamilton was born Dec. 17, 1911, in White County, to Nathaniel Barnett Gilliam and Effie Della Howell Gilliam.
She had been a homemaker.
Hamilton was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman Lee Hamilton; one son, Jim Hamilton; two sisters, Mattie Selby, Christine Burks; and two brothers, Hubert Gilliam and Herbert Gilliam.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Clara Mae and Erskine Bozarth, of Madison, Jessi Lee and Ralph Anderson, of Old Hickory; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Shelby Jo Hamilton, of Double Springs; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
