Enforcement officer position set

White County officials are readying for enforcement of the recently passed “overgrown vegetation” resolution that will cite property owners for specific violations that will include unsafe conditions and debris.
Members of Steering Committee A, of White County Board of Commissioners, voted Monday night to begin the next step in solidifying the plans for enforcing the recently passed resolution that will make property owners be liable for cleaning up neglected property.

Correction officer arrested

Ricky Preston, 22, of Cookeville, a correction officer with the White County Sheriff Department, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with introduction of drugs into a penal facility, drug possession, and possession of schedule II drug.
According to Detective Chris Isom, WCSD spokesperson, at approximately 7 a.m., Jan. 15, 2008, Deputy Kyle Herren and K-9 officer “Max” ran an exploration search of the parking lot at White County Justice Center.
“Max indicated on Preston’s vehicle, and the drug detectives went inside and got him,” said Isom.
The subsequent search of Preston’s vehicle reportedly revealed an undisclosed amount of pills believed to be oxycodone, and a “small … Read More

Mildred Ruth Manus, 87, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 12, 2008.
Manus was born Sept. 19, 1920, in White County, to William Floyd Parker and Emma Ann Rittenberry.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard J.B. Manus; and four brothers, Ray Parker, Clay Parker, Jerry Parker and Ernest Parker.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dwight Lee and Gayle Winnett, and one grandson, Stephen Winnett, all of Sparta.
Services were 1 p.m., Jan. 14, 2008, at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Highland Cemetery. Bro. Dwight Fuqua officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Kathryn Mitchell Harris

Kathryn Mitchell Harris, 93, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 12, 2008.
Harris was born Feb. 3, 1914, in White County, to Waymon Mansfield and Florence Steakley Mitchell.
She graduated from White County High School and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University Harris taught at elementary and high schools in Doyle, Lebanon and Nashville. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Sparta Woman’s Club, Lebanon Woman’s Club, ADK Educational Sorority, the White County Retired Teachers’ Association and Sparta First Baptist Church.

William Thaddus “Bill” Ellis, 78, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 12, 2008.
Ellis was born July 29, 1929, in White County, to Ernest Monroe Ellis and Olive Austin Ellis.
He was retired from Greene’s Auto Parts.
Ellis was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Buster Ellis; and two sisters, Jewel Jones and Marie Ellis.

Jack Pearson, 80, of Franklin, formerly of Sparta, passed away Jan. 11, 2008.
Pearson was born Jan. 21, 1927, in White County, to William Edward Pearson and Zola Mae Hennessee.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. An avid sports fan, Pearson retired with more than 30 years service as a social worker with the Tennessee Department of Human Services.
