Warriors secure second straight trip to substate

Time to celebrate. Josh Brown celebrates the Warrior win after tossing the ball high into the air while the WCHS fans show their approval. Despite the snowy evening, plenty of White County fans made the trip to Shelbyville to watch the Warriors defeat Oakland 57-44. The win pits the Warriors against Siegel in the Region 4AAA title game Thursday at 7 p.m. The win also guarantees the Warriors a second straight trip to the substate.

Taking care of the ball. Kyle Delaney holds the ball high above his head as he is pressured by a pair of Oakland defenders late in the game. Delaney, after being

Region finals struggles

Posted on February 29, 2008 12:12 am by Sparta Live

As much success as the White County High School basketball teams have had through the years, there is one place where that has been limited.  It’s not an actual place; it’s a point of the season.  The region finals
Through the years, the WCHS basketball teams have not had the best of luck in the region championship games.  As many times as our teams have been to the state tournament, I can remember four times that we have gotten to host a substate game.  The Warriors have only once – 1981.  The Warriorettes have three times – 1983, 1993 and 1997.  To be fair, the 1980 Warrior team … Read More

A little nerve wracking

Posted on February 29, 2008 12:12 am by Sparta Live

Just got back from Shelbyville where I watched the Warriors pull one out over Oakland in the region semifinals.
At halftime, I’ll admit I was a little concerned.  We weren’t playing very good and Oakland had the lead.  We came out like a team on a mission in the second half and took the win ending Oakland’s season.  That means we get to go on to the region championship game and to the substate.
I did take a moment as I was leaving the gym to stop and say something to one of Oakland’s seniors.  The gym was almost empty and he stood there taking it all in.  … Read More

Who wrote the book of love?

Posted on February 29, 2008 12:12 am by Sparta Live

Do you ever wonder what kind of computer program it takes or what type of questions people answer on those matchmaker websites to find their perfect love? I do.
As I sit in my chair in the living room, watching reruns of Law and Order, here it comes, a commercial for eHarmony or one of those other “just click here and we will find your perfect partner” websites my mind wanders on certain questions and how we would answer them. I glance over at my spouse and consider areas we agree on and the ones we don’t.
Now maybe you have been one of those who have found … Read More

The life of a sports writer

Posted on February 29, 2008 12:12 am by Sparta Live

It’s nearly midnight and I am actually just really getting started.  It was almost 1 p.m. today before I got to sleep so I didn’t get up until most people were home from work and getting settled in for the night.
Some people say I have my days and nights mixed up, but it’s the nature of being a sports writer.  When the games are over and others go home to bed, we get to sit down in front of a computer and write about what we just saw.  If it’s deadline night (we who are not daily newspapers don’t have deadlines every day), I have to not … Read More

My new place

Posted on February 29, 2008 12:12 am by Sparta Live

What a great view I have from my new abode! I love living in downtown Sparta. After all, there’s a lot to see, especially all those individuals who refuse to pay attention to that gadget hanging from a cross-pole, otherwise known as a traffic light. I can see it all! My kitchen window is directly aligned with the stopping point for those turning on North Church. So, if you fail to yield, I will see you! Then, my living room window (and I’ve got three of them facing the same direction as the kitchen) really gives me a great look at those drivers who think where they’re going … Read More

What happened to respect?

Posted on February 29, 2008 12:12 am by Sparta Live

Wow. I was playing with the title with one particular incident in mind, but looking at it in black and white this may have to be number one in a series. I will try my best to stay on subject.
Okay, we all saw it – the video of the Cookeville officer “obviously” taking the marijuana out of his shirt pocket and planting it on the “poor innocent victim.”
I automatically thought, “There has to be more to the story.” Call me a skeptic, or whatever, I am tired of police officers taking a bad rap in the media when they have a job that most of us … Read More
