Nyleptha Roberts celebrates 110th

Nyleptha Roberts celebrated her 110th birthday March 12, 2008, at Life Care Center of Sparta, where she now resides. The feisty tiny woman gave advice on how to live a long healthy life, as well as telling the crowd she didn’t need another man in her life !


Farmer’s role increasingly difficult

“Every citizen, whether they’re in White County or the rest of the United States, needs to realize the value of the farmer,” stated Scott Swoape, director of the White County U.T. Extension Office, “that they are out there to produce food and fiber for the citizens.”
And the week of March 16-20, National Agriculture Week, is set to bring awareness to the daunting tasks of farmers and the agriculture industry.
According to AgDay.org, each day one farmer feeds one 144 people compared to feeding 25 people in the 1960’s.
In 2007, White County had almost 2,900 acres in corn production and over 1,500 acres in wheat production, … CONTINUED

Marilyn K. Anderson Presley, 55, of Sparta, passed away March 13, 2008.
Presley was born Jan. 11, 1953.
She was the wife of Henry Presley.
Funeral Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Mary Sue Logan

Mary Sue Logan, 74, of Sparta, passed away March 13, 2008.
Logan was born April 9, 1933, in Tulsa, Okla., to Dorothy McCue.
She worked in the California poultry industry as an inspector.
Logan was preceded in death by her mother.
Survivors include her husband, Don Logan, of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Donnie Scott, of Sparta; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 5 p.m., March 18, 2008, at Old Paths Baptist Church on Crossville Highway.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clark was born May 1, 1921.

    The White County High School baseball team got the 2008 season off on a winning note Tuesday when they traveled to Livingston and came home with a 5-4 victory.

    Despite a season opening loss to Livingston, first year Warrior soccer coach, Ross Fann, thinks his team could put together one of the best seasons ever for WCHS boys’ soccer.

    The Warriors scored first in Monday’s game, but saw the Wildcats score four unanswered to take the 4-1 victory.

Warriorette softball picks up first win

    After suffering losses in their first two games of the season, the White County High School softball team got in the win column Thursday when they defeated visiting York Institute.  The Warriorettes shut out the visitors and took the five-inning win by a score of 11-0.  If Mother Nature cooperates, the Warriorettes will compete in the Commando Classic in Hendersonville over the weekend.  See Monday’s edition for all the details.

    The White County High School jumped right into District 7AAA action to start off the season, but could not pick up a win over either Blackman or Oakland.
    The Warriorettes were shut out in back to back games on Monday and Tuesday falling to 0-2 to start the season.  On Monday, they played host to Oakland and were defeated 6-0.  Blackman came calling Tuesday and rolled to the 16-0 win.

    The White County High School tennis teams played host to Van Buren County Tuesday.
    The Warriorettes picked up the 5-1 win over the visitors while the Warriors split evenly the six matches with the Eagles.
    In girls’ singles action, Star Simpson, playing the number one spot, won her match 8-0 over Lacy Zarifan.  Chelsea Sims was narrowly defeated 8-5 by Emily Cope in the second seed match.  Megan James, the third seed, recorded a 9-7 win in a tiebreaker over Dewane Neese.  Jessica Jones wrapped up singles action with an 8-4 win over Dannon Measles.
    The Warriorettes swept the doubles matches picking up two … CONTINUED
