Mary Kate Stone Merriman, 89, of West Plains, Mo., formerly of Sparta, passed away March 28, 2008.
Merriman was born Dec. 1, 1918, in White County, to Walter C. Stone and Pearlie Estelle Officer Stone.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mitchell V. Merriman; brothers, L.D. Stone and J.T. Stone; and daughter, Mary Don Prestridge.

James B. Cumby, 86, of Sparta, passed away March 28, 2008 at Erlanger Medical Center, in Chattanooga.
Cumby was the son of Casto and Elsie Hyder Cumby.
He was preceded in death his sisters, Bonnie King, Frances Howard and Anna Pauline Young; stepmother, Ruby Cumby; and brothers-in-law, Vestal Howard, Ed Young and Hollis Garrett.
Cumby had been employed by City of Sparta.

Judy Duane Haston, 56, a resident of Nashville, formerly of Sparta, passed away March 29, 2008, at her residence. She is the daughter of Margaret Haston, of Sparta.
Haston was born Dec. 13, 1951, in White County.
Funeral arrangements will be complete by 2 p.m., March 31, 2008.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Ida Mae Staples

Ida Mae Staples, 78, of Columbia City, passed away March 20, 2008.
 Staples was born Dec. 15, 1929, in White County, to Samuel and Rosetta Barker Mitchell.
 Her formative years were spent in Sparta, where she completed her education at White County High School.
On Oct. 24, 1953, she married James L. Staples. They made their first home in Columbia City. They resided in Chicago for almost 20 years, returning to Columbia in 1973.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne Staples, and a sister, Mildred Marie Bertolotti.

Tennie Elizabeth (Betty) Hollingsworth, 78, of Sparta, passed away March 29, 2008, at White County Community Hospital.
Hollingsworth was born Oct. 25, 1929, in Sparta, to Jimmy Alley and Minnie Williams Alley.   
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Bates (Bill) Hollingsworth; son, William Bates Hollingsworth Jr.; one brother; and two sisters.

In honor and remembrance

Owen William Andrews, 85, of Cookeville passed away March 28, 2008, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Andrews was born Jan. 4, 1923, in White County, to William Labourn and Emma Catherine Stamps Andrews.
He was a member of Algood Church of Chris and a retired meat cutter with Garner’s Grocery, in Norcross, Ga. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving at Iwo Jima and Angaur.
Andrews was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Odell, Othal and Jimmy Andrews.

Connie Elaine Webb, 52, of Sparta, passed away Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, at the residence of her mother, in McMinnville.
Webb was born March 28, 1955, to Jean Hawkins Killian and William Morgan Webb.
She was a former employee of Mallory Controls, Putnam Dental Lab and Service Transport.
Webb was preceded in death by her father and an uncle, Raymond Hawkins.

WCHS soccer picks up road win at Coffee County

    The WCHS soccer team took to the road for the first time this season and came back to Sparta with a 4-1 win in hand.
    The Warriors, who had been idle over a week, defeated the Coffee County Red Raiders for their second victory of the season improving to 2-1 overall.  The Warriors built a 1-0 halftime lead and never trailed in the contest.

PMI $200,000 victim of copper thieves

Bright and shiny. With the rising price of copper, thieves have been targeting heating and cooling units to strip them of their metals. Legislators are continuing to formulate ways to deter these vandals from damaging the properties of Tennesseans.

Investigators with White County Sheriff Department are following leads in the latest copper theft, where Precision Molding Inc., had a couple of large commercial units damaged.
“We got a call Monday, about someone who had stolen coils and condensers out of two commercial units,” said Detective John Ford, lead investigator on the case. “These commercial units aren’t like a normal home unit. They cost around $100,000.”

Tennis defeated by Lebanon

    The WCHS tennis teams returned to action for the first time in a week and were handily defeated in District 7AAA action by Lebanon.
    Justin Turney kept the day from being a complete sweep by Lebanon as he won the match between the top two boys’ seeds.  He took the 8-4 victory.  From there, it was all Lebanon.

WCHS track competes in dual meet at Warren County

Lacy Yslas led the WCHS track team with wins in the discus and the shot put

    The White County High School track team competed in their first meet that counted team points.  It was WCHS against Warren County.
    The WCHS girls were defeated 51-45 while the boys were outscored 76-31.  Team members’ finishes in their respective events earn points.  Total points are compiled at the end of the meet to determine a winner.

Liens will be placed on city property

Three separate properties in City of Sparta that have been under repair will now have additional costs attached to them.
During the recent meeting Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Mayor Tommy Pedigo asked members how they wanted to proceed in the matters where some property owners had been issued citations because of violations.
Dennis Clark, codes enforcement officer, reminded the board the citations had been issued more than 90 days ago. The owners had appeared at a December 2007 board meeting to address the problems.
