Busy day in spring sports

    Tuesday was a busy day in spring sports at White County High School.  All five school teams were in action, but only one could come up with the win.
    The Warrior soccer team picked up a 4-1 win at Coffee County improving to 2-1 on the season.  The WCHS tennis teams were defeated handily at Lebanon.
    The WCHS track team competed in a dual meet at Warren County.  The girls came up just shot by a score of 51-45 while the boys suffered a 76-31 loss.

No one injured in Tuesday school bus crash

Emergency personnel from fire, rescue, law enforcement and medical departments responded to the scene of a crash on McMinnville Highway involving a White County School bus full of students on Tuesday afternoon.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper David Slatton conducted the investigation.
Slatton said at approximately 3:15 p.m., a White County School bus, loaded with around 33 students, was traveling westbound on McMinnville Highway and had stopped to “let off passengers” when a 16-year-old female, driving a 1993 Chevrolet Camaro failed to stop and “ran underneath the back of the bus.”
All the students were checked and none found to have suffered any injuries. The bus driver, Daniel P.

Margaret Smith Stampfli

Margaret Smith Stampfli, 88, passed away March 23, 2008.
Stampfli was the daughter of Victor and Ruby Swindell Smith.
She was retired from the State of Tennessee, with 30 years service in the women’s prison system.
Stampfli was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Stephen Stampfli; and brother, Lester Smith.
Survivors include her son, Paul David Stampfli Dracos, of Nashville; daughters, Carolyn Stampfli and Janie Layne and husband Bobby, of Gruetli-Laager; brother, Hershel Lee Smith, of Adairsville, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Gravesides services will be 2 p.m., March 25, 2008, at Bethlehem Cemetery, in Doyle.

In honor and remembrance

Haskel Elby Howard, 87, of Smithville, passed away March  24, 2008.
Howard was born to Erbie Haskel and Mertie Ovella Slagle Howard.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother; and two brothers, Kenneth D. Howard and Holly J. Howard.
Survivors include his wife, Chizuko Howard, of Smithville; three children, Michael Kenji Howard and wife Kelli, of Batavia, Ohio, Riki Lynn Howard and wife Gina, of Brentwood, Michiko Naomi Howard Martin and husband Tim, of Smithville; seven grandchildren, Raleigh Howard, Kenleigh Howard, Allison Howard, Slater Howard, Hayley Martin, Raiden Martin, Madeline Martin; and several … CONTINUED

Connie Elaine Webb, 52, of Sparta, passed away Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, at the residence of her mother, in McMinnville.
Webb was born March 28, 1955, to Jean Hawkins Killian and William Morgan Webb.
She was a former employee of Mallory Controls, Putnam Dental Lab and Service Transport.
Webb was preceded in death by her father and an uncle, Raymond Hawkins.

Frona Louetta Hill, 89, of Sparta, passed away March 16, 2008.
Hill was born March 24, 1918, in Overton County, to George W. Hawkins and Dora Langford Hawkins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Claston Hill; one sister, Eppie Boles; four brothers, Raymond Hawkins, Milton Hawkins, Vanis Hawkins, Huel Hawkins; and two infants, Judy Ann Hill and Billie Sue Hill.

Warrior baseball blanked by Blackman

It was a tough outing for the Warriors when Blackman visited Monday, March 24th, for a District 7AAA contest.  The Blaze roughed up three different Warrior pitchers as they captured the 11-0 win.  The Warriors managed only two hits on the day while Blackman picked up 15, including a trio of home runs.

Clata Dell Horton

Clata Dell Horton, 86, of Sparta, passed away March 15, 2008.
Horton was born Jan. 20, 1922, in White County, to Johnny McPeak and Stella Davis McPeak.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mason Horton; and one brother, J.B. McPeak.
Survivors include three sisters, Ernestine Boyd, Laurine McPeak, Mattie Cruise; one niece, Gail Blankenship and husband Dale; two nephews, Steve Boyd and wife Debra, Ron Cruise and wife Beverly; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services were 2 p.m., March 17, 2008, at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Wilhite officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
