2nd meth lab discovered in a week

While two White County Sheriff Department officers were attempting to recover a stolen vehicle in the northwestern portion of the county, they discovered a second meth lab in less than a week.
Shawn Troglin, of Sparta, was charged with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
According to Deputy Dale Bumbalough, Deputy Craig Wilson and Sgt. Jody O’Dell were at a residence on Carter Road, just off Tollisontown Road, when they observed Troglin drive by, “acting suspicious.”
“It looked like he was going to turn in,” said Bumbalough. “But when he saw the officers, he went to a neighbor’s house.”

Legislative Wrap up For the Week of March 21, 2008

This has been the busiest week of the year.  Representatives from the Putnam, Warren and White County Farm Bureaus visited us this week and spoke to us about the various issues they were interested in this year. We also had representatives from the nursing home industry visiting the legislature to speak with us about the issues they were interested in this year.
As I told you last week we had over 500 bills in the various committees this week. Each day from 8 AM until 5PM it was virtually non stop.  Next week there are 494 bills scheduled in the various committees.

Linda Elaine Brown Robinson

Linda Elaine Brown Robinson, age 63, of Sparta, passed away March 20, 2008, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Robinson was born July 11, 1944, in White County, to Robert and Maybele Elliott Brown. She was a flight attendant.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Robert A. Robinson.
Survivors include her sister, Patsy Scott and husband Jimmy, of Sparta; brother: Robert D. Brown and wife Zelda, of Sparta; and nieces and nephews,  Kathy Scott Chapman and husband Terry, of Murfreesboro, Andrew Brown, of Jasper, Daniel and Zachary Brown, both of Sparta, and Steve Scott and wife Cathy, of Nashville.

Irene Young Palmer, 84, of Sparta, passed away March 20, 2008, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Palmer was the daughter of Edgar Pearce Young and Melissa Caroline Taylor Young.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred D. Palmer; brother, Edgar Young; and sister, Mary Davis.
Survivors include two brothers, Thomas Young and Robert Young, and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were noon, March 21, 2008, at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Barlow

Margaret Barlow, 89, of Sparta, passed away, March 21, 2008 at her residence.
Barlow was the daughter of Thomas Willie and Mary Emma Lee Ellis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Clinton Barlow; grandsons, Ray Barlow Jr., Billy K. Knowles and Johny Taylor; daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Barlow; four sisters, Pearl Barlow, Dona Hamilton, Theana Coffee and Ova Denson; brother, Clayton Ellis; and great-great-grandson, Kevin Barlow.

James David Graham, 65, of Walling, passed away March 18, 2008, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville.
Graham was born July 7, 1942, in White County, to Roy Houston Graham and Lillie Bell Wilson Graham.
He had been a farmer.
Graham was preceded in death by his parents.

    While most students were on Easter break, several WCHS athletes were in action on Thursday and Friday.
    Rainy weather on Wednesday forced cancellation of the tennis match at Siegel and moved the baseball game at Lebanon to Thursday.  The Warriors built a 4-1 lead in that game, but saw Lebanon put seven runs on the board in the fifth inning finishing with the 8-4 victory.

    The White County High School Warrior soccer team picked up their first win of the season when they shut out visiting Macon County Monday by a score of 3-0.
    The Warriors managed the win despite dealing with a schedule that was adjusted twice before the game to accommodate the high school’s academic banquet.  The game, originally scheduled for 6 p.m., was moved to four and then 3:30.  The win, led by the leg of Jonathan Fann, who recorded the hat trick evened the WCHS record at … Read More

Warriorette softball falls in 2-1 heartbreaker

    The Warriorette softball team continues to improve with each outing and proved that when they came so close to pulling out a win over district foe, Lebanon.  In the end though, the Blue Devilettes left Sparta with the narrow 2-1 win.
    The story of the game for the Warriorettes was “what could have been.”  In a one-run loss, WCHS left 11 runners stranded on base.  Lebanon left three stranded.  The Warriorettes had the big advantage in base runners 12-5, but could not translate that into runner, who actually crossed the plate.

    The White County High School tennis team played host to District 7AAA rival, Cookeville, Tuesday and fell victim to the Cavaliers and Lady Cavaliers.
    Cookeville dominated the matches on a sunny, but windy afternoon.  The Warriors managed one district win on the day.  That was an 8-3 victory by Conlon Cash over Ethan Copeland.  J.T. Randolph won his match, but that did not count against the day’s slate.  Those were the only victories of the day by the WCHS players.

Track team gets first taste of action

    One group of high school students went somewhere last week they had never been before – a high school track meet.  The students who went there, the WCHS track team.
    Coach David Bruce took the White County High School track and field team to their first meet in over 15 years.  Actually, the team is not completely inexperienced, as Markie Voyles has done her share of running.  The rest were competing in that type of event for the first time and according to Coach Bruce, the first outing went well.
    The WCHS team competed against four other schools, Tullahoma, Warren County, Shelbyville and Coffee County.

    The Warriors didn’t get off to the best of starts in the District 7AAA race Tuesday as visiting Lebanon rolled over WCHS 13-1 in five innings.

One injured in Bockman Way crash

Collision. When the vehicles collided, the front wheel area of this dark red 1997 Chrysler van was severely damaged.

A crash at the intersection of Bockman Way and Butler Street Monday morning sent one Sparta woman to the hospital.

According to Patrolman Brent Copeland, Sparta Police Department, at approximately 8:11 a.m., March 17, 2008, Lorena F. McKay, 64, of Sparta, was driving a dark red 1997 Chrysler Town and Country van.
McKay was traveling east, on Bockman Way, and collided with David Lane Pope, 53, of Sparta, who was driving a blue 1996 Chevrolet Explorer van.

Copeland Chapel Church carries on

Hope won’t die. Firefighters rush in to try and save the 47-year-old church.

“Something almost died within me when it burned,” stated Bro. Freddie Copeland, as he reflected back on the dreadful fire that destroyed the church building. “I stood there and watched it burn, and I thought about the purpose of it.”
Copeland talked about the recent snowy day when he received the news about the structure where he had preached the gospel more than four decades.
