1-million-gallon water tank gets facelift

A job that is expected to cost more than a quarter-million dollars for the rehabilitation of one of Sparta’s water tanks was addressed during the Thursday meeting of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
Neal Westerman, an engineer with James C. Hailey and Co., explained the steps leading toward the complete refurbishing and repainting of the water tank located at was known for decades as Baker Park. The 1-million-gallon tank sits of the property adjacent to the city’s animal control facility, which was once the site of Baker Park Swimming Pool.

‘Eyesore’ needs to be cleaned up

One of Sparta’s aldermen who has been adamant about cleaning up the city has once again voiced his concerns during a Thursday board meeting.
Howard Griffin, longtime member of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen, did not mince any words when he stated his opinion.
“The old Sonic is an eyesore – weeds are growing up around the building – it’s deteriorating and falling down,” said Griffin. “We don’t need to do favors – we need to hit them all the same way, regardless of who owns it.”

Motorcycle rider gets a little scare

No citations were issued in a Friday morning incident where a motorcyclist and the driver of a van both reacted quickly enough to avoid a possible serious collision.
According to Patrolman Brent Copeland, of Sparta Police Department, Johnny Dale Dulworth, 56, of Sparta, was traveling northbound on North Main Street, riding a 2005 Yamaha V-Star motorcycle. Donny Haley, 62, of Doyle, was traveling westbound on East Everett Street, in a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan.

L. R. West, Sparta Electric Director was appointed to Central Service Association Board of Directors at the annual stockholder business meeting in Orange Beach, Ala., on May 20, 2008.

William “Bill” Dulaney1914-2008

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

William “Bill” Dulaney, 93, of Doyle, passed away June 6, 2008, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Dulaney was born Oct. 19, 1914, to John L. Dulaney and Betty Talley dulaney.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been employed at Sparta Spoke Factory.
Dulaney was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Pearl Young Lawson Dulaney and daughter, Valarie Dulaney.

Reva Lueulla Rader, 99, of Cookeville, passed away June 1, 2008, at Life Care Center of Sparta. Rader was born Aug. 26, 1908, in Fahrnam, Neb., to Marion Elzy and Essie Gross Miller.  
Her parents soon moved to Missouri, where she grew up.  She was the sixth of seven children.
Rader moved to Cookeville, in 1956, from McMinnville, when her husband, along with Frank Evans, of Nashville, and son-in-law, Forest C. Cantrell, founded Putnam Mfg. Co., which later became Red Kap, Blue Bell and finally, Vanity Fair.
She had been a member of Cookeville First Baptist Church, since 1956, and she was their oldest female member.  Rader was … Read More

Evelyn Yonkers, 83, of Sparta, passed away June 7, 2008, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Yonkers was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Hacketstown, N.J., to Joseph and Madilene LaPlatt Tomanio.
She had enjoyed working as a realtor for many years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Michael Sullivan, of Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, George and Felicia Divine, of Sparta; grandchildren, Greg Jamison and wife Heather and their seven children, all of Seattle, Wash., Kristian Davis and husband Bob and their three children, all of Seattle, Wash.; and loving in-laws, Charles and Edith Bradley, of Sparta.

Burglars target city garage

One or more unknown individuals broke into the Sparta City Garage overnight May 28 and stole several items and damaged at least one vehicle. Officer Brent Copeland, of Sparta Police Department, responded to a call from the city garage where it had been discovered someone had broken into the facility.
The thief or thieves took gasoline and diesel fuel, along with a couple of gas cans and a weedeater.The perpetrators are believed to have parked a vehicle just outside the fence. As of 10 a.m., Thursday, June 5, this man, Kermit Bryson, is the alleged gunman who shot and killed a Grundy County law enforcement officer. A BOLO (Be On Look Out) has been issued in White and surrounding counties.
