Donald Ray Greene

Donald Ray Greene, 75, of Spencer, passed away Sept. 28, 2008, at Spencer Generations.
Greene was born Sept. 1, 1933, in White County, To Eli Greene and Lula Mae Parrish Greene.
He served his country, in 1956, in the U.S. Navy.
Greene was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nell Ruth Greene; brother, Gene Ed Green; and half-sister, Marie Panzer.
Survivors include his sisters, Gladys Guy, of Spencer, Diana Fay Wilson, of Sparta; brother, John Elbert Greene, of Florida; several nieces, nephews, friends; and several “adopted families.”
Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Oct. 1, 2008, at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Bro. Leonard Simmons will officiate

    White County Sheriff Department has made its second sizable drug bust in a week.
Through efforts by the TBI, the 13th Judicial Task Force, U.S. Marshals and the DEA, a substantial amount of illegal drugs was found at a residence in the western part of White County. 
Arrested were:
•Charles Edward Rice, 58, of Sparta, manufacturing, delivery selling (two counts); simple possession/casual exchange; $502,000
•Julie Ann Stinson, 42, of Sparta, charged with manufacturing , deliver, selling (two counts); simple possession/casual exchange; bond, $502,000
•Joan Carol Officer, 46, of Sparta, charged with simple possession/casual exchange, bond $2,500

Probation search reveals meth materials

A routine probation search Sept. 26 at a residence on Bluebird Lane led to the arrest of two individuals after sheriff department officers uncovered a stash of what authorities called “mother jars” containing liquids believed to be meth-making materials.
“The liquid in the jars is also known as meth oil,” said Deputy Dale Bumbalough, of White County Sheriff Department.
According to Bumbalough, Jennifer Marie Puckett, age 30, of Sparta, and Jonathan Gerald Puckett, 30, of Sparta, were arrested.
Bumbalough said Department of Children’s Services was also called to the scene to take custody of three children who were living at the residence.

Earl Kay

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Earl E. Kay, 81, passed away at his home in Sparta on Sept. 30, 2008.
Kay was born May 18, 1927, in Shawnee, Okla., to Dorothy Mae Owen Kay and Emmett Earl Kay.
 He retired as a mechanic from Colorado Department of Highways, in 1988. Kay was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sparta and enjoyed mission work, church and family activities. Other favorite pastimes included camping and fishing, restoring old cars and making homemade ice cream.
Kay was preceded in death by his parents.

Sparta Drive-In still in business

Onward. Movies will live on at Sparta Drive-In under the direction of new operators Tommy and Judy Brown. L-R: Tommy Brown, daughter Katelyn Brown, Judy Brown, and Ross and Brenda Cardwell, owners of the drive-in property.

    White Countians can now wipe those looks of sadness from their faces with the announcement last week that Sparta Drive-In is remaining in business.
    Tommy Brown, manager of the business for five years, has officially taken over the operation of the facility. Brown and his wife Judy, along with their teenage daughter Katelyn, will be running the 50-plus-year-old landmark.

    Most Americans are familiar with what is probably one of the greatest lines from a speech in our country’s recent past. “…the only thing we have to fear is – fear itself…” are Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words from his 1933 inaugural address.
But what exactly do FDR’s words mean today?
Fear is an emotion that creates many actions and reactions. Fear comes from the potential results of risk. Stand too close to the edge of a cliff and you’ll feel it.

New D.A. is White County graduate

    A man who graduated from White County High School 34 years ago is now at the helm of the 13th Judicial District as the chief prosecutor of the seven-county region.
    Randy York, of Cumberland County, has been named district attorney general for the 13th Judicial District. Gov. Phil Bredesen made the official announcement Sept. 24 about York’s appointment. Tony Craighead, a former assistant district attorney general, had filled the position two years as a temporary appointment. The seat had originally been vacated by Bill Gibson amid an investigation of alleged ethics violations. Gibson’s official resignation became effective July 2008.

Watch for fake payroll checks

Bogus checks. This is a copy of the actual check that was used to get groceries and cash.

    Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth is warning anyone who cashes payroll checks to be on the lookout for fake checks that have been passed off as the real thing at several establishments around town.
    On Sept. 19, two black females and one black male purchased groceries at Floyd’s Cash Saver Foods. One of the females presented what appeared to be a legitimate check. The cashier processed the payment. However, the check was later discovered to be fake.

Brotherhood. Firefighters risk life and limb together to keep the residents in Sparta and White County safe from harm. Nothing is more befitting than taking a moment to say a prayer, not only for their safety, but also for those whose lives they have touched during the performance of their duties. The upcoming open house at each of the departments gives residents the chance to say thanks.
