Voyles finishes second at Nestle’s Invitational

Headed toward the finish. Warriorette senior cross country runner, Markie Voyles, heads toward the finish line at the Nestle’s Invitational in Macon County last Saturday. Voyles finished second with a time of 20:52.10.

The White County High School cross country team traveled to Macon County Saturday to compete in the Nestle’s Invitational. 
    Approximately 120 boys and 95 girls competed at the event, which is a Midstate Cross Country Association event.
    Markie Voyles finished second in the event with a time of 20:52.10.  The winner was Bradley Central’s Jackie Pitcock.  Her time was 20:25.40.  The WCHS girls finished 9th overall.  Ravenwood was the winning girls’ team while Bradley Central … CONTINUED

The 2008 Fairest of the Fair pageant was held Monday, Sept.1, 2008. Winner, Emily Ann Haley; first runner-up, Brandi Leigh West; second runner-up, Ariel Paige Alley; third runner-up, Kasie Danielle Breeding; fourth runner-up, Sophia Logan Sparkman; Miss Congeniality, Stephanie Elaine Lewis.

Fairest Little Miss pageant was held Monday, Sept. 1, 2008. Winner, Breanna Noell Bush; first runner –up, Hanna Clayton; second runner-up, Cassidy Jade Jones; third runner-up, Janessia Lack; fourth runner-up, Kendra Lindsey Guy; Miss Congeniality, Hailee Rae Young.

Ollie Geer

Ollie Geer, 73, passed away Sept. 1, 2008, at her daughter’s residence surrounded by her family.
Geer was born Jan. 10, 1935, in White County, to Joseph Green Cox and Rosa Lee White Cox.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brothers.
Survivors include her loving husband of 47 years, Robert (Bob) Geer; daughter, Debbie Horton and husband Jimmy, of Murfreesboro; sons, Andy Geer, of Sparta, Randy Geer and wife Laura, of Cookeville; three grandchildren, Joshua Horton, Robert Andrew Geer, Tisha Geer; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service was 1 p.m., Sept. 3, 2008, at Thurman Funeral Home, with burial in Big Springs … CONTINUED


Erbie Lee Conley

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Erbie Lee Conley, 77, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 1, 2008, at his residence.
Conley was born Dec. 22, 1930, to Norman Edgar and Samantha Jane Walker Conley.
He was a farmer and had served in the U.S. Army.
Conley was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Erbie Lee Conley Jr.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Conley and wife Betty, of Sparta, Herbert Conley, Delin Conley, both of Indianapolis; two daughters, Mary Jane Hubbard and husband Roger, Janet Shannon and husband Jerome, all of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; and one sister, Thelma Dean Lawson, … CONTINUED


Mattie Sue Cooper

Faith, family, and Tennessee Technological University—Mattie Sue Cooper defined her life in terms of her Christian faith, her love of family, and her loyalty to the university where she served as a much beloved librarian, first as assistant, then as Head Reference librarian, from 1945 till 1979.
Born in Overton County June 15, 1914, she played basketball at Rickman High School, beginning a lifelong love of sport. In 1938 she took her B.S. in history from then TPI, all the while teaching at Pond Ridge Grammar and Rickman High schools to pay for her education and her B.L.S. from George Peabody College, in 1941. Warriorette soccer drops tough one

It’s a battle. The Warriorettes battled Cookeville tough in a very physical contest between the two District 7AAA teams. After a scoreless first half, the Lady Cavs scored twice in the second half to take the win.

    As was the case with most of the WCHS sports teams this past week, the Warriorette soccer team played host to Cookeville Thursday.
    In a hard fought battle, Cookeville handed the Warriorettes a 2-0 loss in their season opener.
