Wildcats defeat Warriors in “puntfest”

Busy punters. Jordan Armstrong, the Warrior punter, and his counterpart on the Hixson team, were busy players in Friday’s Region 4-4A game between the Warriors and the Wildcats. The two teams combined to punt 16 times in the game. The combined punt yardage exceeded the total combined offensive yards.

Forcing the pitch. Jay Currin gets into the backfield and forces the Hixson quarterback to option the ball to his running back. Currin had 14 tackles in the game, two of which went for negative yards.

WCMS football gets second win of season

    The White County Middle School Warrior football team picked up their second win of the season last Tuesday when they went on the road to defeat Coffee County 26-12. 
    The teams traded punts on each of their first possessions.  Coffee County did manage a first down on their next series, but a big tackle for a loss by Blake Lynn put the Raiders in a hole and they would be forced to punt again.  The only thing was the punt never happened as the snap got away from the punter.  He chased the ball down and fell on it, but the Warriors got excellent field position out of … Read More


WCHS splits week of volleyball action

    The White County High School volleyball team closed out their busy week with a split of the four matches they played during the week. 
    Earlier in the week, they defeated Livingston on Monday before falling to Oakland on Tuesday.  They were back in action Thursday when they hosted Riverdale, who ran the table with a 3-0 win.  Then on Friday, the Warriorettes traveled to Livingston for the second game of the series.  They won the match 3-0 completing a season sweep of the … Read More


Alumni hoopsters wanted!

   White County High School is planning a pair of alumni games to kick off the start of preseason for the basketball season.
    On Saturday, November 1st, the school plans to host both men’s and women’s alumni games at Roy Sewell Gymnasium.  Plans are to split the alumni up into team teams and let them play against each other.  (A medical trainer will be available.)  There will also be a three-point shooting contest.  Plans are even in the works to bring back some former coaches for the event.

Wildcats pass their way past the Warriors 24-7

Jay Currin, who led the Warriors with 14 tackles on the night, gets into the backfield and forces Hixson quarterback, Zach McCarter to pitch to his running back. Hixson defeated WCHS 24-7.

Drivers conduct bus safety drills

    School bus drivers Larry “Bubba” Johnson and Joey Savage have been visiting the county’s schools to demonstrate and explain the importance of bus safety. In this early morning drill, the students must exit the bus in an orderly fashion within one minute.


Fire destroys home on Three Island Road

Firefighters from Central View Volunteer Fire Department were able to keep a fire from spreading to a nearby wooded area on Three Island Road, but were unable to save a doublewide trailer that was completely destroyed Sept. 26.


Dump truck downs communication lines

Numerous White County residents found a disruption in phone services Monday morning when a dump truck driven by Doyle Mayor Robert Meeks tangled with lines on McMinnville Highway.


Stimulus payment filing help offered Oct. 7

    Sparta-White County Senior Center is partnering with Internal Revenue Service to ensure retirees, disabled veterans and low-income workers get help filing for an economic stimulus payment.
    Dan Boone, IRS media specialist, said two IRS employees from the Nashville office would be at the center 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Oct. 7, 2008. Brenda Roberts, director of the center, will also be assisting with the paperwork. The service is provided free-of-charge. Approximately 485 White Countians who are qualified for the stimulus payment have not filed the proper forms.

Dedication held for 2,800 acres near Scott’s Gulf

Large crowd. Approximately 350 people attended a dedication that was held on Sept. 27, for the addition of land that completes the Scott’s Gulf to Fall Creek Falls corridor.

Wild life. The most recent purchase of 689 acres includes three miles of bluff and Welch Point that will be managed by TWRA.

WCHS competes in school’s first-ever bowling match

    Just over a year after the original plans were put in place, White County High School competed in its first-ever TSSAA sanctioned bowling match.
    The newly organized WCHS bowling team under the direction of Larry Thompson took on Stone Memorial in a match at Bowling World in Cookeville Monday afternoon.  Stone Memorial took the victory on the day, but the WCHS bowlers were able to get their first taste of competitive action in the match.
    Members of the inaugural bowling team are Billy Thomas, Ethan Hall, Shane Young, Kasey Clary, Kayla Clary, Megan James, Miranda Weldon and Samantha Holloway.

Warriorette golfers ousted in region tournament

Bright future on the links. Warriorette freshman golfer, Allison Geer, missed qualifying for the state tournament by five strokes. Geer has three more seasons to try to qualify for the state while wearing the maroon and gray.

  Golf season came to a close for the Warriorette golfers in the region tournament at Champions Run in Murfreesboro on Monday.
